WSJ: Microsoft cuts Win8 OEM pricing for tablets
It's no secret that Windows 8 PCs, especially tablets, aren't flying off store shelves. I expect the problem is two-fold: one, the hardware isn't quite there yet, and two, prices aren't quite low enough yet.
Well, we're still waiting for Intel and AMD to do something about the former, but it looks Microsoft has addressed the latter. At least, that's the word from "people ...

Kickstarter funding sought for Gigabyte-built hackintosh board
Over the last few years, all sorts of interesting projects have elicited funding via Kickstarter. This is the first time I've seen a PC motherboard pop up on the site, though. A company called Quo is seeking funding for projectQ, a mobo that seems to be purpose-built for hackintosh systems. Quo doesn't mention Apple by name, but it does claim projectQ is "the first motherboard designed to run any operating system you choose."
One look at the specificiations makes the target market pretty obvious. This puppy combines an Ivy Bridge socket with dual Thunderbolt ports, an Intel Gigabit Ethernet controller, multiple digital ...

TressFX hair physics shown on video, finally
If you were reading the news last week, you probably saw our report about TressFX Hair—a new, DirectCompute-accelerated hair simulation technology developed by Crystal Dynamics in collaboration with AMD. Sadly, at the time, we only had static screenshots to show you.
And, ya know, it's kinda hard to ...

MSI Haswell mobo caught on camera
CeBIT kicked off this morning in Hanover, Germany, and the first reports from the show floor are out. Among them: a sneak preview of an upcoming Haswell motherboard from MSI. Fudzilla got up close and personal to the board and snapped a couple of photos, which you can view here.
Fudzilla says the board is based on Intel's Z87 Express chipset—likely the successor to the enthusiast-focused Z77—and features an LGA socket incompatible with existing Sandy Bridge and Ivy Bridge CPUs. Intel is ...

IDC expects further PC market shrinkage in 2013
We already know the PC market didn't fare very well in 2012. Global shipments shrank for the whole year, and we even saw a decline in the normally fruitful holiday quarter. Unfortunately, we may not be out of the woods yet. IDC has released its shipment forecast for 2013, and it says we're due for another bad year.
IDC expects the circumstances that led to last year's decline—a saturated market, a bad economy, and sluggish Windows 8 adoption—to carry on "at least" through the first half of this ...

2% of Steam survey participants now using Linux
Steam's hardware survey provides an interesting snapshot of the PC industry—or at least the portion of it that plays games using Valve's distribution service. The numbers for February are out, and perhaps the most interesting statistic is the percentage of folks using the Steam for Linux client, which sits at just over 2%. That may be a relatively small number, but it's an impressive figure considering the fact that the Linux client has only been available to the general public since December's open beta. The client was officially released in mid-February.
Since the Linux client's unveiling, the number of compatible Steam games has grown to 131 titles , most of which come from ...
