Tizen 2.0 SDK and source code arrives, boasts a bunch of new features
Last September, an early release of Tizen 2.0 popped its head up, but disappeared back into its hibernation until now. The SDK and source code to Tizen 2.0 is now out, dropping its Alpha name.
Tizen 2.0 has now had some enhanced support injected into it, with HTML5 getting some amplification, as well as better Web UI framework that provides full-screen and multi-window features. Developers can now use the new hardware APIs for Bluetooth and NFC support, as well as access a device's call history, calendar and messaging "subsystems".
The updated OS now includes support for background applications, text-to-speech and IP Push, as well as reference applications including calendar, gallery and a phone app. Native IDE and an improved web development environment have been included with the latest code. More information is available

Doom screenshot gets remastered from 320x240 to a pixel-busting 9600x7211
I still remember playing Doom and thinking it was just incredible at the time, but to fast-forward to now and think our smartphones have superior resolutions to the once superior 320x240 is scary.
Well, a Deviant Art user going by the name Elemental79 has converted a simple 320x240 pixel screenshot from Doom, to an absolutely gorgeous 9600x7211. This includes textures, lighting and 3D effects, all done within Photoshop. Elemental79 has said that:
Each frame represents ten seconds of work. The image spans across 7 PSD files at a resolution of 9600x7211 pixels. The project took 35 hours to complete over the course of 8 days.
I wouldn't mind playing the game if it were like this, just give me Oculus' Rift VR goggles and I wouldn't come out of my office ever again.

FCC broadband monitoring data shows half of ISPs fall short of advertised speed
It's long been a contention that the advertised speeds are an "up to" rating meaning that the ISP doesn't actually have to provide that speed. Consumers generally expect that the advertised speed is the speed that they will be receiving at their house. The FCC monitors the actual versus advertised speed and has reported some data for September of last year.
According to the FCC's data, more than half of the major ISPs failed to meet the advertised download speed. An additional three meet the advertised speed when averaged over 24 hours, but fell short of the advertised speed during the peak hours of 7-11p.m. The chart of data can be seen above. Upload speeds can be seen below.
When it comes to upload, the companies performed better. Only four of the 15 companies didn't provide advertised upload speeds. It just goes to show that not all ISPs are created equal.

Sprint starts LTE rollout in New York, San Francisco, Washington DC
Users of Sprint with 4G LTE devices in Washington DC, San Francisco, and New York City should be able to pick up spotty LTE coverage. It appears that Sprint has started flipping the switch on towers in those cities without making an official announcement. It's likely they're testing the towers ahead of an official launch.
Coverage has been spotty meaning that not all towers have been turned on. Once the coverage is officially announced and made live, users should expect a blanket of LTE goodness. Sprint has confirmed that the cell towers were turned on for testing and that the company decided to leave them on until the official announcement so that users could continue using LTE.

Burger King gets its Twitter account hacked, posts that they have been bought by McDonalds
Burger King has had its Twitter account hacked today. It promptly tweeted out that the company had been purchased by McDonalds. The Profile picture and cover photo were changed out to make this more believable. Twitter accounts are hacked all the time, but they usually aren't the high profile brand profiles.
Twitter sells itself as a brand-friendly social network. With a high-profile hack such as this, some of the brands could start to rethink their reliance on the site. With the potential implications aside, let's take a look at some of the hilarious tweets pushed out while it was hacked.
The account was suspended by Twitter around 1:35p.m. EST. The hack appears to have been orchestrated by someone in the Anonymous collective, though why they would go after Burger King isn't immediately clear. Whatever the reason may be, we're glad they were making funny tweets instead of vulgar ones.

Ubuntu teases announcement tomorrow with timer, looks to be about tablets
Canonical has put up a timer on Ubuntu's website with the text "Tick, tock, tablet time!" We widely expect this announcement to be a tablet-optimized Ubuntu operating system as Canonical isn't known for making hardware and we have no reason to believe they are going to get into the hardware game.
It's not clear whether the tablet version of Ubuntu would be based off of the desktop version or off of the new smartphone version. Either way, Canonical needs to establish itself across the entire mobile stack in order to make itself a viable mobile operating system.
Canonical has already confirmed plans to launch a tablet version of Ubuntu. We'll have to wait another 18 hours or so to find out the full details. We'll be sure to have coverage of the announcement along with coverage of HTC's press conference scheduled tomorrow.

ReportTT: Sony to leverage Gaikai streaming in PlayStation 4
While we shouldn't have to speculate for much longer about what will and won't be in the PlayStation 4, one report is claiming that Sony will make use of Gaikai's streaming technology. The company was acquired by Sony back in 2012 for $380 million and could be the key to the PlayStation 4 having backwards compatibility.
The PlayStation 4 is widely expected to use an updated architecture--some rumors are suggesting x86--and this could present problems for backwards compatibility. Gaikai could solve this by streaming the games from a remote server. Another benefit is that the games could be played on mobile devices and computers without any sort of modification.
Another benefit, at least for the game manufacturers, is that this could eliminate the used game market. One final suggestion is that this technology could allow the PS3 to play games designed and built for the PlayStation 4, though this might be unlikely as it would cut into PlayStation 4 sales.
We should know all of the dirty details on Wednesday when it is widely expected that the console will be announced.

RumorTT: Tweet suggests Galaxy S4 is going to be unveiled March 14
Eldar Murtazin, a person known for getting it right when it comes to Nokia leaks, has tweeted, "
Save the date for a big announcement - March 14." When it was suggested that this could be the Samsung Galaxy S4, he responded with a "Yes!" and pinpointed the announcement location as New York.
Of course, this doesn't mean that the launch is confirmed. Far from it, actually. Murtazin has previously been spot on when it comes to Nokia rumors, though his oft-suggested buyout by Microsoft has yet to happen. However, other rumors have placed a Galaxy S4 unveiling sometime mid-March, so we're starting to think it's going to happen.
Full details aren't known yet, but I'd keep mid-March open if you're planning on attending or watching the announcement.

RumorTT: Photo said to show iPhone 5S motherboard, features A7 processor
The first possibly substantiated rumor has surfaced with a photo reportedly of the iPhone 5S' motherboard. In the picture, there is a chip clearly marked "A7." This chip should be the successor to the current A6 processor used in the iPhone and iPad 4.
iOSDoc claims that this A7 chip is a 1.2GHz quad-core part.
The new chip is said to be paired with a PowerVR quad-core SGX554MP4 graphics chip and 2GB of dual-channel LPDDR-800. The RAM is an upgrade from the current 1GB of LPDDR2-1066. The device is also said to come with iOS 7, which makes sense, and the upgraded OS is set to feature many cool new features.
Of course, we've heard lots of rumors about Apple, with some saying that there are three phones in the works by Apple. I'd continue to take rumors with a grain of salt, though this one has a bit more credibility due to the picture.

SpaceTT: Finnish astrophotographer's animated GIF images of Elephants Trunk Nebula are mesmerizing
It's no secret - I am a huge astronomy buff. So much so that I even endeavor into the complex realm that is astrophotography. I say "complex" because taking a clear, crisp and vibrant image of the cosmos is quite challenging, and requites many hours to produce a single 2D image.
Finnish astrophotographer J-P Mestävainio has taken these complexities and mastered them, but he did not stop there. Mestävainio wondered what the Nebula he was photographing looked like in the third dimension and set out to create what can only be described as breathtaking. Seen below is IC 1396 or the Elephants Trunk Nebula.

These animated GIF images are in all actuality an artist interpretation of how he thinks the nebula would appear if passing by. The GIFs are created by adding interpretations and educated guesses based on the formation of the nebula and a rule-of-thumb that brighter stars are closer than darker ones to known data about the nebula, like distance and the location of certain stars around it to create a 3D model of the nebula.
True 3D images of nebula's are impossible to take from Earth as there is simply not enough difference in POV for us to take the required shots to build a true model from images. Still, these animated GIFs are way cool. If you want to see more of Mestävainio's GIFs check out source #2 below.

Mysterious Windows Blue confirmed with job add posting, the next Microsoft OS already
You may not have heard about Windows Blue, neither had I until this morning. It appears to be the next generation Windows operating system from Microsoft. Unlike the 10+ year reign of Windows XP or the three years Windows 7 saw, Blue will begin a new era for the OS giant.
If what we are seeing is true, Windows Blue will follow an annual update model, which would actually bring development cost down for Microsoft. Blue will roll out across both Windows Phones and PC's sometime in mid-2013, a mere 6-7 months after the release of Windows 8. Blue was confirmed in a series of job postings which were uncovered by The Verge, who managed to get a snippet of one of the listings.
We're looking for an excellent, experienced SDET to join the Core Experience team in Windows Sustained Engineering (WinSE). The Core Experience features are the centerpiece of the new Windows UI, representing most of what customers touch and see in the OS, including: the start screen; application lifecycle; windowing; and personalization. Windows Blue promises to build and improve upon these aspects of the OS, enhancing ease of use and the overall user experience on devices and PCs worldwide.

The A58 DSLR is geared towards more professional photographers, and will feature a 20 megapixel sensor that is capable of up to eight frames per second burst. The body looks quite similar to that of the A57, but we have heard that the focusing system has been redesigned for the A58. The A58 will be able to be controlled through a computer, but WiFi functionality is reportedly not featured.

Amazon severs ties with German security firm HESS after Neo-Nazi allegations
German security firm, Hensel European Security Services (HESS), has lost its Amazon.com contract amidst accusations of Neo-Nazi ties and mistreating foreign workers.
The whistle was blown last week when German TV channel ARD broadcast a documentary about the firm's bad behavior. The documentary used hidden cameras to showcase how the firm harassed and intimidated foreign workers. It also blew the cover off some of its "military style" employees who seemed to have ties with Neo-Nazi organizations.
HESS firmly denies the allegations, noting that it employees a number of foreign workers and immigrants. The documentary caught Amazon's eye, which lead to the decision to sever all ties between Amazon and HESS. I have included the video below, but you will need to understand German to get the full details.
The documentary alleges that HESS routinely searched temporary staff members quarters and even frisked them after morning breakfast to check that they did not steal any food. Shortly after the documentary's release, Amazon launched an investigation and this morning released the following statement:
"Amazon has secured that the criticized security service is not used any longer, effective immediately. As a responsible employer of approximately 8,000 salaried logistics employees, Amazon has zero-tolerance for discrimination and intimidation and expects the same from every company we work with."

Opera shrinks in-house Dev team ahead of Webkit adoption
Last week I
reported on Opera dumping Presto as it's rendering engine and adoption the more developer friendly, open source Webkit. The news kept flowing when the company managed to pick up Skyfire for a reported $155 million shortly after the Webkit announcement.
It looks like Opera will blanket headlines today as well, as the reports coming in from the Norwegian publication digi.no. They have announced that the company is letting some of its long time devs go from its core technology developer team. The publication said that as many as 90 of the 100 man team were terminated.
A large percentage of those who lost their jobs actually took a large severance package before Christmas. Some higher ranking developers were shuffled around to new projects within the company. Opera HR Director Tove Selnes is quoted:
"This reorganization has been resolved in cooperation with the individual. We've come to terms with about 90 people, both in development and not development-related departments."

Sony looks back on PlayStation history with release of three videos, ahead of PS4 announcement
Sony is in full hype-things-up mode this week. On Wednesday we are expected to see the company unveil the long anticipated PlayStation 4 (PS4). Ahead of the launch, Sony has released a series of web videos that outline the history of the popular gaming console.
The company has put together three videos that show the console's revolutionary history. The first video covers the PlayStation, the one that started it all. The next video moves into the realm of the PlayStation 2, and talks about how the PS2 revolutionized gaming and DVD playback.
The final video covers the PlayStation 3 and bills it as a "groundbreaking" breakthrough in console gaming, citing things like HD gaming, Blu-ray, Netflix, and cloud based storage for game saves. This leaves us to wonder what new technologies, features and options the PlayStation 4 bring to console gaming? I guess we will find out on Wednesday!

Factory image of Android 4.2.2 released by Google, includes some nice new features
Google has just released the factory image of Android Jellybean 4.2.2 for its Nexus devices. The ability to download the new factory ROM comes on the heels of the official Over the Air patch for Nexus owners last week.
Although Google has yet to publish an official changelog, the 4.4.2 update ushers in a fairly decent number of stability and speed enhancements, alongside some UI tweaks. Other changes that have been noticed are: Bluetooth bug fixes, a more secure ABD, and a count-down to finish display for Google Play Store downloads.
Haven't gotten the update yet? No worries as not all users have gotten the update yet, but as the staggered global roll-out continues, all Nexus owners should see the patch very soon. Have you noticed any new features we missed? Let us know in the comments!

Sony chops the price of their PS Vita in Japan
If you're based in Japan and were holding off on buying a PS Vita, now might be the time to think about getting one. During an online video broadcast, Sony have announced a price cut for their handheld gaming device.
The price will drop for both the Wi-Fi and 3G models on February 28, to 19,980 yen (or around $215). This is a drop of around 1/5, with the current price at 24,980 yen. There'll also be a one-week free trial of PlayStation Plus, as well as various promotions for the PS Store and Reader e-book store. There's no talk of a price drop elsewhere, so for now - this is just in Japan.

Kingwin Power Force 850-Watt 80 PLUS Bronze Power Supply Review
Introduction
It has been nearly a year since we've had a look at anything from Kingwin so we figured it was time to take a look at something new from them. Up to this point, everything that we have looked at concerning their power supply offerings has been leading edge. Whether it is efficiency, silence, quality of power, or a mix of any of these, we've looked at what they have had to offer. What we haven't taken a peek at is any of their entry-level offerings.
That is where today's review comes in. On the bench right now is the Power Force 850W power supply. It is very much an "entry-level" power supply aimed towards those with higher quantity of power needs. Don't let this fool you, though. While it may not be the most efficient or have the greatest voltage regulation on the planet, it is more than capable of powering a dual GPU gaming rig with ease.
Specifications, Availability and Pricing
A single 12V rail provides 100% of the power for the Kingwin Power Force 850W power supply via a 70.83A rail. Both the 3.3V and the 5V rails are rated at 25A each with a combined maximum output of 150W. The 5VSB rail is rated for 3A or 15W. Maximum combined output of the Power Force 850W power supply is 850W.
One of the first things to go when you start talking about a lower end unit is features. That is something that you just won't find happening here with the Power Force 850W from Kingwin. They keep almost all of the features you'd expect to see from a top-tier power supply, even providing more than what we saw from the recently reviewed PC Power & Cooling Silencer Mk III 850W. All cables, both native and modular are fully sleeved. The power supply is rated for 80 PLUS Bronze efficiency, but not for 100% continuous output at 50C.
Kingwin has an MSRP of $109.99. That's quite cheap for an 850W modular unit and the best we could find the unit for online at the time of writing was $110.15 with free shipping at aaawave.com. Kingwin backs the Power Force 850W with a five year warranty.

Swiftech H220 Compact Drive II CPU Water Cooler Review
Introduction
After a long talk with Gabe from Swiftech at CES, I finally got to get to my own testing of their new AIO coolers. The news of these has been flooding websites and there is no reason at this point to not disclose the product since it is all the rage as of late. The new H220 is an AIO cooler that should make every other AIO builder on the planet stand up and take note as to what Swiftech is now bringing to the table. I for one found that not only are the standard components are much better than the basic AIO, but Gabe and his team at Swiftech have gone over this concept with a fine toothed comb and made sure that this kit not only disassembles to add in blocks, or just so that it can be installed anywhere it can fit, including outside the chassis. This is something no other AIO on the market has while still retaining its warranty.
Most of the parts in this kit are off the shelf components that Swiftech has already had much success with, and some things are new, made specifically for this kit. The head unit is designed off of the Apogee Drive II that we had tested earlier, but this time it is built with an aesthetic that is only found in the H220. The radiator is also something off the shelf, and the major plus to this design is that the radiator is brass and copper, so there is no metal mixing in the Swiftech loop, like every other solution on the planet. Another enhancement to the H220 is that it uses 3/8" black tubing to improve flow inside of the loop and also help to fight any direct sunlight from making bacteria or fungus in the coolant. Lastly, this kit comes completely assembled, right down to the fans on the radiator, and while being a "custom water loop", these units should perform like it, but allow users with limited skills a chance to enjoy what some of us have been using for years.
So in essence, Swiftech is taking on all the major players in the AIO market, and instead of going to Asetek, CoolIT, or just stealing the basic concepts and sticking their name on it, Swiftech takes a major step above the crowd and delivered the H220, which we are about to see in fine detail. Three things that should sell you on a cooler like this versus the competition are the attention to detail in all of the components and accessories, the fact that you can tear this loop apart and add in a block, radiator, pump, flow meter; basically anything you want, and the last thing that should amaze you is the price point at which Swiftech is going to sell these units. With those basic three things, Swiftech may very well shake up the AIO community and raise the bar to a height that most other manufacturers won't be able to reach since their work is all done by someone else. This is where it is nice to be manufacturer that designs the products; you don't have to follow the mold that has been presented.
That in mind, let's have a look together and see why I think Swiftech may just crush the competition and all other AIO offerings on the market today.

With the largest display yet to appear on an LG smartphone, the 4G LTE-equipped Optimus G Pro with 5.5-inch Full HD IPS display and new UX features was developed to meet the growing demand for smartphones with large screens.
The Full HD IPS display on the Optimus G Pro - developed in partnership with LG Display - delivers 1920 x 1080 pixels at 400ppi. 15 MILLION CUSTOMERS PROVE LG OPTIMUS L SERIES SUCCESS
Sydney, Feb. 18, 2013 - LG Electronics (LG) has announced it has sold an Optimus L Series device globally every second over the past two months, propelling global sales of the popular smartphones to over 15 million units. Since its launch at Mobile World Congress (MWC) last year, Optimus L Series smartphones have become the device of choice for individuals around the world who favour a well-balanced smartphone with a unique design. Building on this momentum, LG will unveil a new generation of the stylish series at MWC 2013 with an upgraded design and improved features.
The Optimus L SeriesII will carry on the legacy of its predecessor, offering a user experience unique to LG smartphones. The Optimus L3II, Optimus L5II and Optimus L7II all feature a comfortable contour with laser-etched details in a slim unibody design. The sleek devices are also differentiated by smart LED lighting around the home button*.
"The success of the Optimus L Series globally confirms our belief that there is a market for well-balanced smartphones that represent unique consumer tastes," said Jonathan Banks, Head of Mobile Communications at LG Electronics Australia. "The new Optimus L SeriesII expands upon the design philosophy of the original series so we're confident that LG will have another hit on its hands. In Australia, the launch of the first range of L Series devices (L2 Dual Sim, L3, L5, L7 and L9) has delivered fantastic growth for the local business. Based on market share, LG Mobile is now the number two smartphone brand for 'pre-paid' customers and the number three player in the Android ecosystem off the back of the 2012 launch of these handsets."
The new Optimus L SeriesII smartphones will be unveiled at Mobile World Congress later this month. Visitors to MWC are encouraged to see these new models up close at the LG booth in Hall 3.
