Nikon announces the D7100 DSLR: $1,200, 24MP DX sensor, improved speed and focusing
Not eager to fork over two grand for Nikon's full-frame D600? You might take interest with the company's new D7100, a lightweight DSLR with a brand new DX-format (APS-C) sensor and a handful of other goodies to boot. The 24.1-megapixel cam's imaging technology follows a now-commonplace industry trend by dropping the optical low-pass filter in favor of enhanced resolution. Naturally, the D7000 successor includes a sensitivity range of ISO 100 to 25,600 (Hi 2), along with improved noise reduction for better results in low-light. There's a D4-like EXPEED 3 processor with support for 6 frames-per-second shooting in any mode, even when capturing 12- or 14-bit RAW images. A unique 1.3x DX crop function boost that rate to 7 fps, however, while capturing a maximum of 15.4-megapixel stills and 1080/60i or 50i video, compared to 1080 30/25/24p in the regular mode. There's a 3.2-inch 1.229M-dot LCD, an OLED display inside the viewfinder for crisper data readout, and plenty more if you read on!

HBO Go for Android adds HDMI video output, at last HBO brought some of the content walls down when it opened up AirPlay support in the HBO Go app for iOS users, proving that it wasn't going to protect TV viewing at all cost. It just removed some more barriers: the premium channel has quietly rolled out an update to its Android app that enables HDMI video output. Provided a phone or tablet supports the connection (sorry, Nexus 7 owners), it too can pipe video to the big screen. The solution still doesn't let us watch HBO without a pricey TV subscription, but it will give us fewer qualms about catching up on Girls when we're at a friend's place. Sony announces PlayStation app for iOS and Android, will expand games to the second screen Nintendo isn't the only gaming outfit playing around with a second screen -- Sony has plans of its own. The aptly named PlayStation app promises to expand gameplay to a player's iOS or Android device, propagating in-game maps, social networking tools or simply an easier way to access the PlayStation store. The application's functionality sounds an awful lot like the Wii U GamePad, though Sony hasn't mentioned if off-screen play via tablet will be a possibility. Even if that function doesn't come to your smartphone or tablet, it's definitely available on PlayStation Vita, which fills out the rest of the company's second screen plans with its remote play feature. Sony details PlayStation 4 specs: 8-core AMD 'Jaguar' CPU, 6X Blu-ray So we didn't see the actual PlayStation 4 console on stage at Sony's press event tonight, but that doesn't mean we can't know what's inside it. A press release reveals that the PS4's PC-like configuration will include an 8-core 64-bit x86 "Jaguar" CPU built by AMD, with a Radeon GPU comprised of 18 "compute units" capable of cranking out 1.84 TFLOPS to process graphics and more. Its Blu-ray drive -- yes, it will still have one of those -- spins at a brisk 6X (8X for DVDs) and as mentioned on stage, it packs 8GB of unified GDDR5 RAM capable of 176GB/sec of bandwidth. 802.11n WiFi, USB 3.0, Bluetooth 2.1, HDMI, optical out and even a legacy analog AV out make up the inputs and outputs, although the potential amounts of storage are still unspecified. Also mentioned are the new software features, which include long-awaited additions like cross-game chat, and
PS4 Eye promises to unlock your PlayStation at a glance, tips hat to Kinect Just finished watching Sony's "see the future" of PlayStation event? We hope you didn't blink, you might have missed a quick reveal of the next PlayStation Eye The optical sensor was overshadowed by the reveal of the DualShock 4, but it's nothing to scoff at -- the second generation Eye features two 1280 x 800 cameras, four microphones and an 85-degree field of view. Put together, the setup promises facial recognition, player positioning and depth sensing and enhanced PlayStation Move support. The Kinect-like camera is designed to work with Sony's new controller standard too, recognizing each player by the color of the DualShock 4's LED light bar. Sony says the Eye will allow the PS4 to use face login, and the collection of microphones might make voice control possible as well. No word yet if the new camera device will be a PS4 pack in or sold separately, but if you're interested in mining press releases for details, you'll find one after the break. Samsung unveils TV Discovery for finding and watching video content Mobile World Congress is just a few days away, but that hasn't stopped Samsung from pulling back the curtain on TV Discovery: a new service that lets users search for and watch live TV, on-demand video and even online content from outfits such as YouTube. The platform, which will work on Samsung's mobile devices and Smart TVs, serves up recommendations and even hones its ability to gauge your interest in programs the more often its used. When loaded on a tablet or smartphone, TV Discovery can act as a universal remote control, slinging commands to cable and satellite boxes, Blu-Ray players, home stereos and more. Of course, if you're feeling social, the solution will also let you share what you're watching with others and check up on your friend's TV-viewing habits. Netflix and Blockbuster will be on tap for the platform in the US, while Europe will have access to Acetrax, Wuaki, MovieMax, FilmIn, Chili, Pathé and SF Anytime. TV Discovery will hit all of the firm's 2013 Smart TVs in the US, Korea and 12 European countries -- including France, Germany, Italy and the UK -- during the first quarter of this year. Slates and smartphones in those countries, however, will see nab the experience during Q2. Filed under: HD, Samsung Comments Read More ...
PlayStation 4 games revealed: a preview of what's to come As with any gaming console, good hardware only tells half of the story. Today, Sony announced a stable of games that'll play a large role in determining the early success of the PlayStation 4, which is set for availability this holiday season. Leading the charge will be biggies such as Killzone Shadow Fall, Bungie's next first-person shooter known as Destiny, Diablo III and a new installment of Final Fantasy. These games will be joined by creative efforts such as Knack, a game directed by the PlayStation 4's lead architect, Mark Cerny, Watch Dogs from Ubisoft, and Driveclub, which aims to bring team-based racing to new levels. PS4 owners can also expect exclusives such as InFamous: Second Son and The Witness. Rounding out the list -- for now, anyway -- is a game from Capcom with the working title of Deep Down, along with an unnamed entry from Media Molecule. While it's clear that Sony and the development community have a number of surprises that've yet to be revealed, you're invited to check out a preview of what's to come in the following gallery. Bungie's Destiny headed to the PlayStation 4 with exclusive content It wasn't clear if Bungie's 10-year project was headed to a next-gen console, but now the developer has made it official: Destiny is headed to the PlayStation 4. Gamers hoping to pick up the PS4 version of the title aren't in store for an extra-long wait either, as it'll be available at the same time the PlayStation 3 flavor launches. In order to sweeten the pot for fans of Sony's gaming console, Bungie's also promising "exclusive playable content just for the PlayStation community." ZTE to ship some of the first Tegra 4 phones by mid-2013 When NVIDIA unveiled the Tegra 4 last month, there were questions as to when it would ship in a phone, or whether it was bound for phones in the first place. ZTE has settled that question with plans to be the first company shipping Tegra 4-packing smartphones. The Chinese phone builder won't spoil the surprise by naming the devices in question, but the first models reach China by mid-2013. An LTE "super phone" is in the pipeline, ZTE says. With that fresh ground broken, we're mostly left wondering how likely it is that these devices will cross the Pacific -- as well as guessing which other companies are lined up for NVIDIA's fourth-generation silicon. Square Enix's Shinji Hashimoto announces ... that he has a Final Fantasy PS4 announcement for E3 What a tease. Brand director Hashimoto-san, who's worked on the likes of Kingdom Hearts, Chrono Trigger and a raft of Final Fantasy titles over the years, took to the stage. And what did he have to tell us? Could Square Enix be working on yet another Final Fantasy title for Sony's new PlayStation 4? Well, yes. Naturally. But that was about it, adding that they are "preparing for development of a Final Fantasy title. Please be excited for E3 this year." What's another few months? Right? Diablo 3 heading to PlayStation 4 (and 3), part of 'strategic partnership' between Blizzard and Sony Blizzard Entertainment's Chris Metzen announced tonight that Diablo 3 is headed to both the PlayStation 3 and 4. He announced as much during Sony's big PlayStation 4 reveal event this evening, noting that it's part of a "strategic partnership" between the two companies. He didn't say anything about how it'll change, but he did say that fans will get a chance to check out the new version at PAX East this March. Sony teases PlayStation 4 developer list, includes many of the majors (update: Blizzard and Bungie) Want to know just who's developing for the PlayStation 4? Sony just gave is a very good peek: it's promising worldwide support for the console, and quickly flashed just which companies that entails. The cursory look shows us many familiar heavyweights, such as 2K, Activision, Capcom, EA, Konami and Ubisoft. We've also spotted Rockstar, Square Enix and other names that most would have hoped for with the new PlayStation. Suffice it to say that Sony hasn't had any problems attracting the support it needs for a decent early lineup, although how we don't know how many of these developers will have something ready for launch day. Update: A few exist that aren't (directly) mentioned in the graphic above: Blizzard is porting Diablo III to the PS4, and Bungie will put its future MMO-like shooter, Destiny, on the game machine. The PlayStation 4 supports the PlayStation Move controller The PlayStation 3's microphone-looking motion controller, PlayStation Move, works on the PlayStation 4. LittleBigPlanet dev studio Media Molecule had its head, Alex Evans, on-stage at Sony's big PlayStation 4 event to introduce what his company's been creating for the next-gen game system. That meant two gentlemen acting as puppeteers, employing the aforementioned Move controller, to create a ... well, a kind of crazy scene in a game. Two puppets, two men with Move controllers, and an '80s metal concert recreation. We're not sure what to make of it, but hey, it confirms that Move works on PS4. Hot dog! Oh, and as for an actual game title? We didn't hear one, but it looks like we'll hear something from MM about PS4 software in the future. The Witness is headed to PlayStation 4, the next game from Braid creator Jonathan Blow Nothing could've been more delightful than Braid creator Jonathan Blow suddenly walking on-stage at Sony's big PlayStation 4 reveal only to make fun of all the explosions the event had already featured. Oh sure, he was also at the event to reveal that his latest game, The Witness, is headed to Sony's PlayStation 4 (as well as to PC and iOS, as the reveal trailer elucidates), but the first statement was much funnier. Anyway, the game looks much, much better than the various demos we've played across the past few years -- Blow's been developing The Witness for quite some time, and showing it publicly, albeit never on a PlayStation 4. We'll hopefully hear more in the coming days, so keep an eye out. Update: This post originally stated that The Witness was heading exclusively to the PlayStation 4, when in fact it's only "console exclusive" to the PlayStation 4. It will also launch on iOS and PC. We've added the new trailer below the break. Filed under: Gaming, Software, HD, Sony Comments Read More ...
Orbitsound announces M9 and M12 soundbars with Bluetooth connectivity and wireless subwoofer UK-based audio outfit Orbitsound has just announced a new bluetooth-enabled range of soundbars. You may remember the British firm for its T14, T12 -- or more recently -- T9 offerings, but the latest line-up cuts the cable, opening up a host of new audio sources. So, it's out with the old 30-pin dock, but there's still optical, AUX, video out, RCA and 3.5mm jack connections if you prefer to keep things physically connected. It's not just the sound source that's on the loose either, as the companion active subwoofer uses a bespoke low-latency 2.4GHz connection (claimed to be 0.01 seconds delay) too -- no more hiding wires around the back. Other new features include a new digital amplifier, a Bluetooth remote, and a settings memory to remember your source, volume and EQ levels for next time. Not enough? How about a "grab" feature that instantly starts playing the last media from a paired phone or tabled? The firm's proprietary spatial sound? That, of course, remains present. There are two models to choose from, the M9 for smaller TVs, and the M12 for the bigger set in your front room. Expect to pay £299 (about $450) and £399 (about $600) respectively when they launch in March. UK retailer John Lewis will be getting them first, but online orders and "select" independent retailers should follow. Filed under: Home Entertainment Comments Source: Orbitsound Read More ...

PlayStation 4 supports remote play on PlayStation Vita

PlayStation 4's UI and inner workings detailed: No more booting, games download as you play them We've heard some hardware numbers, but now we're hearing more how the PlayStation 4 will actually work in practice. Alongside connections to other Sony hardware, the highlight that caught our attention was that you'll be able to leap back into your game by pressing the power button. From off. Better still, there's also a secondary custom chip for uploads and download and with that, the PS4 will let you play your new titles as you download them. The rest of the game will continue to be piped into that ample hard drive. You can also share (with that new button) 10 seconds of video, trimming and uploading your own gaming highlights to your buddies -- heck, you can even stream it, with allies 'tagging' in and taking over the controller. In fact Sony will make social networks far more integrated, with "real people", photos and companion mobile apps to augment this. In fact you'll be able to browse video remotely from the likes of your smartphone, tablet or Vita. The system itself will also learn your preferences and download content it reckons you'll like. Personalization is shaping up to be a big focus for Sony. Check out our liveblog of Sony's event to get the latest news as it happens! Filed under: Gaming, Sony Comments Read More ...
PlayStation 4 will stream gameplay to friends, allow them to take the reins

PS4 to get companion social app for tablets, PS Vita
Sony's just begun to show us what's been up its sleeve for the PlayStation 4, and it turns out that it's got social networking and the second screen on its mind. Gamers will be able to share ten second video clips of their gameplay, stream play sessions online to friends and "keep in touch with the evolving world of your game, regardless of your location." The network will also learn a player's likes and dislikes, and automatically download content it figures users will dig. Hirai and Co. are also planning PS Vita and tablet apps for folks to partake in the social experiences when they're not near their PS4.
