Driver software to be tweaked to reduce Radeon frame latencies in series of updates
To our surprise, we recently found that the GeForce GTX 660 Ti generally outperforms the Radeon HD 7950 in our latency-focused tests in many of the latest games, despite the fact that the Radeon is based on decidedly beefier hardware. Although the Radeon cranked out conventionally respectable FPS averages, it often produced a number of long-latency frames interspersed throughout our testing sessions. Follow-up testing confirmed the problem isn't confined to Windows 8, and we even posted a slow-motion video illustrating the issue. We concluded that AMD has work to do in optimizing its drivers for the latest games.
Earlier today, in my blog post , I noted that AMD's David Baumann had posted in a thread at Beyond3D , stating that a host of different ...

PC Gamer previews 2013's upcoming titles 2012 was a pretty good year for PC gamers. Sure, we had to share a lot of titles with consoles, but we also got plenty of PC-specific eye candy, including a number of high-resolution texture packs for some really good games. On the whole, developers seem to be devoting more attention to the PC versions of their titles. The indie scene seems to be gathering steam, as well, thanks to Humble Bundles, Valve's content delivery system, and not-so-clever puns. Looks like here's plenty of gaming goodness on tap for 2013, too. PC Gamer has put together an exhaustive preview of this year's upcoming PC games. While the ... Read more...

As the second turns: the web digests our game testing methods A funny thing happened over the holidays. We went into the break right after our Radeon vs. GeForce rematch and follow-up articles had caused a bit of a stir. Also, our high-speed video had helped to illustrate the problems we'd identified with smooth animation, particularly on the Radeon HD 7950. All of this activity brought new attention to the frame latency-focused game benchmark methods we proposed in my "Inside the second" article over a year ago and have been refining since.
As we were busy engaging in the holiday rituals of overeating and profound regret, a number of folks across the web were spending their spare time thinking about latency-focused game testing, ...

Marvell invests in SSD maker Memoright Marvell is an important player in the SSD business. While its name doesn't appear on any drives, its controller technology resides inside popular SSDs from Corsair, Crucial, OCZ, Plextor, and others. Now, it looks like the firm has made an investment in Taiwanese SSD maker Memoright. DigiTimes' sources say the two firms have formed a "strategic alliance for combining [Marvell's] SSD controller ICs and Memoright's firmware technology to provide complete SSD solutions." Interestingly, this move seems to be intended to make it easier for Marvell to sell its technology to prospective drive makers. According to the source quoted by DigiTimes, Marvell's partners have been doing ... Read more...

$249 Chromebook is Amazon's top-selling laptop We reviewed Samsung's latest Chromebook about a month ago. It's an interesting machine for sure, and at $249 for the Wi-Fi-only model, it's undoubtedly affordable. However, Chrome OS restricts users to web-based activities—even local file management is hopelessly limited—and the ARM processor rules out a quick side-grade to Windows. That's why I was surprised to see the Samsung Chromebook at the top of Amazon's best-sellers list for laptop computers. The folks at Slashdot made the discovery yesterday evening, and sure enough, it checks out ... Read more...

December usage share numbers are in, and according to Net Applications, Windows 8's popularity is on the rise. However, Microsoft's new operating system still isn't nearly as popular as Windows 7 was two months after its release.
Net Applications says 1.72% of web users were running Windows 8 in December 2012, up from 1.09% in November. By contrast, in December 2009, Windows ...
