US-Based Atari Companies File for Bankruptcy In my basement is the first device I ever played a video game on; an Atari 800 Computer. I can still remember playing Frogger, Missile Command, Pitfall, Donkey Kong, and, of course, Asteroids with the black joystick and single red button. Now multiple Atari companies (Atari Inc., Atari Interactive Inc. Humungous Inc. and California US Holdings Inc.) are filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, as reported by Bloomberg. The purpose of these bankruptcy filings is to enable the companies to separate from their French parent, Atari SA. Atari SA has not been profitable since 1999, even after selling assets and restructuring itself. The US companies hope that the separation will allow them to tap revenue sources previously unavailable to them. Read More ...
Windows 8 Pricing to Increase in February If you haven't tried Windows 8 yet but want to purchase a copy of the software, you should probably choose to soon. After the first of February this year, the Windows 8 Pro upgrade will cost $200, instead of the $40 special offer currently available to users with a previous version of Windows installed. The Windows 8 Standard upgrade, however, will cost just $120. The change in pricing follows the end of the special offer announced at Windows 8's release to those with a previous version of Windows installed. Users with any Windows 8 preview installed (be it Consumer Preview, Developer Preview or Release Preview) will also experience system restarts every hour until a standard RTM version of Windows is installed. Roadmap for Fusion Power Released While solar and wind power may be hot topics at the moment, it is nuclear fusion which many scientists are looking to for providing clean power to the world. The ITER experiment is an effort by multiple nations to build the first prototype, commercial fusion reactor. Now researchers at the European Fusion Development Agreement have released a roadmap for ITER and the DEMO power plant to follow. Nuclear fusion releases energy by combining the nuclei of light atoms including deuterium, an isotope of hydrogen. These materials, especially deuterium, are relatively common, and the fusion process produces little, harmful waste as even the radioactive waste is short-lived. One of the challenges with associated with a fusion reactor though is having it produce more power than it takes, and that is part of the focus of the roadmap. The document lays out the current status of ongoing research, identifies open issues, and even estimates the materials required for completion by 2050. The roadmap describes three time phases in it with the first period (2014-2020) focused on the construction of ITER itself, the second period (2021-2030) further developing ITER to its maximum potential, and the third period (2031-2050) dedicated to creating DEMO. DEMO is to be the actual power plant that will be connected to a power grid, while ITER is the experimental precursor. Read More ...
GeForce Titan: NVIDIA's GK110-Based Mainstream Graphics Card A purported NVIDIA product release on late February could very well spark a lot of interest in an unexciting initial first quarter for consumer-level PC graphics. That card is what's being called, not too subtly, as the GeForce Titan. Utilizing NVIDIA's GK110 graphics architecture, it has been hinted that the mainstream GeForce Titan SKU will have 14 SMX units or 2,688 CUDA cores. The unconfirmed specifications also point towards a GDDR5 memory interface with 384-bit bandwidth, together with a default memory loadout of 6GB. There was no mention of the high-end card maintaining the "600 series" moniker, which could very well indicate the Titan's integration into the GeForce 700 Kepler Refresh family. With a speculated price range of around $899, will the single-GPU prowess of the GeForce Titan be mighty enough to overthrow NVIDIA's own GTX690 juggernaut? Read More ...
Intel Releases Linux Benchmarks Intel has released a group of 13 Linux benchmarks to the public that it had previously used for internal testing. The benchmarks were developed at the companies Open-Source Technology Center and were given to Phoronix to add to the Phoronix Test Suite. Included in the tests is a decompression test, and the tests are all targeted at OS level functionality. The tests will likely be most useful to "developers testing distributions, drivers and other Linux code where squeezing out a sliver of added OS performance could make all the difference." New File Upload Site Launched by Kim Dotcom Kim Dotcom is the founder of the site Megaupload, which was taken down by United States authorities last year for helping to facilitate up to $500 million in entertainment industry losses due to piracy. Kim has just launched a new service, Mega, and is already boasting half a million users. Kim held a press conference and launch party at his mansion in New Zealand, complete with a re-enactment of the raid by law enforcement on his mansion. The site features 50GB of free storage and adds encryption and decryption, a feature that Kim believes will keep him safe from any legal proceedings in the future. The decryption keys are held by users and therefore Mega has no ability to know what files are being stored and transferred using its service. Read More ...
Single-Slot iGame GeForce GTX 650 Ti Announced by Colorful The current crop of GeForce GTX 650 Ti cards are mostly of the dual-slot kind, but Colorful's latest is a sleek black Kepler design that's a tad thinner than its counterparts. The German GPU maker touts it as the world's first single-slot GeForce GTX 650 Ti, which incorporates a few design ideas from an equally slim iGame GTS450 card released back in 2011. The oddly named iGame GTX650Ti 1G Buri-Slim features high-C POSCAP capacitors and high efficient ON-SEMI MOSFET coupled with a 3+1 VRM phase. Using two Dual-link DVI and a mini-HDMI port, the iGame GTX650Ti Buri-Slim is clocked at 928MHz with the memory running at 5400MHz. Colorful manages the card's thermals using a penetrated design for its chokes, which go through the card's PCB. Its heatsink uses a combination of copper base and aluminum for the shell, along with aluminum fins and a turbofan. If the iGame GTX650Ti Buri-Slim does keep its temps cool in tight spaces while pushing polygons, it's going to be right at home with a compact gaming rig. Read More ...
