Wanted: Surrogate for Neanderthal Baby I don't think you will find a Want Ad phrased as such in your local paper, but the call will be going out in principle. Scientists are getting close to cloning a Neanderthal from 'spare parts' lying about the lab and all they will need soon is an 'adventurous' woman to serve as the surrogate to the infant. Blizzard's Jay Wilson Leaving the Diablo 3 Team In a full page post on the Diablo 3 website, former Diablo 3 Game Director Jay Wilson outlined his leaving the team and moving on to a new unnamed project. His tenure at the helm of Diablo 3 was controversial to say the least especially with his responses to negative criticism of the game for the direction in which he took it. Mozilla Stabilizes Firefox 18 Less than two weeks ago Mozilla rolled out Firefox 18 only to discover the release had three stability issues. Mozilla has released a fix in Firefox 18.0.1 to rectify the problems. So much for beta testing. The update should be automatically downloaded by Firefox on Windows and Mac OS X. Nasty Client Website Lets Businesses Review Customers In sort of a reverse engineering project of sites like Angie's List, a former landscaper has created a website to rate customers called NastyClient.com. The site deals with everything from the obvious non-paying deadbeats to customers who are just a pain to do work for. Amidst fake FBI helicopters, security personnel dressed in mini-skirts, speeches and a big old open bar, Kim Dotcom opened the doors to the Internet to join in his new project. VIA Shows Off $79 Rock and $99 Paper ARM PCs If you think the rise of ARM-based mini-computing sounds like a fun project to take on, but just don't feel like the Raspberry Pi suits your needs, VIA might have the solution for you with its updated version of its ARM-based mini-computer. VIA has upgraded the specs from its original entry into the market last spring. Rock and Paper, as the two systems are called, will be available in March. The Rock and Paper offer a nice spec bump over the original APC, which shipped with Android 2.3, an ARM 11 processor, only 2GB RAM, and was only 720p capable in the graphics department. NYPD Releases Crime Reporting App for Citizens Got crime? There's an App for that. The New York City police have released an App to provide an easy way for citizens to report crimes or send in a tip anonymously. Detective Elliot Stabler would be proud. Not only does it allow citizens to easily access crime statistics, see Most Wanted lists, get precinct information and view rewards for information about past crimes, it also lets users submit anonymous tips about crimes they have witnessed. Microsoft Working to Restore Missing Hotmail Emails If you were among the many Hotmail users who switched over to Outlook.com and lost access to your emails, Microsoft is now working on a fix to the problem. The loss of access to Hotmail is tied to the renaming of accounts, which has been halted temporarily. We fixed many user accounts that were renamed and as a result had trouble accessing some of their email. Wikimedia Sites to Move to Primary Data Center in Virginia Wikimedia is on the move. The Wikimedia Foundation, which includes Wikipedia, will be moving its primary operations to Ashburn, Virginia from Tampa, Florida. The move has been planned since 2010 and will be completed January 22-24th with intermittent interruptions during the final phase of the relocation. The Wikimedia Foundation currently operates a total of about 885 servers, and serves about 20 billion page views a month, on a non-profit budget that relies almost entirely on donations from readers. Smart Floor Uses LED Lights for Changeable Boundary Lines A German company is changing the way we could utilize indoor sports spaces by developing a new clear floor covering. The system is called ASB Glassfloor and uses built-in LEDs to create a changeable pattern on the floor to accommodate different boundary lines for different sports. The programmable LEDs can also be used to display advertisements, which will probably catch the eye of prospective buyers.
