The Internet Will Kill Us All Plan on living though the apocalypse in three days? Don't get too excited, the internet will be the death of us all by 2014 anyway. What's in store two years from now? Murder and mayhem -- literally, says IID president and CTO Rod Rasmussen. He says, and I'm not making this up, that in 2014 we will see the first homicides committed remotely using the Internet as the murder weapon. Comments Read More ...
Instagram Responds To Customer Backlash Instagram's co-founder has taken to the company blog to let you know this is all just a big misunderstanding and that legal documents are easy to misinterpret. Advertising on Instagram From the start, Instagram was created to become a business. Advertising is one of many ways that Instagram can become a self-sustaining business, but not the only one. Our intention in updating the terms was to communicate that we'd like to experiment with innovative advertising that feels appropriate on Instagram. Instead it was interpreted by many that we were going to sell your photos to others without any compensation. This is not true and it is our mistake that this language is confusing. To be clear: it is not our intention to sell your photos. We are working on updated language in the terms to make sure this is clear. Ongoing Discussion Read More ...

Facebook Bringing Video Ads to News Feed I doubt there will be much uproar over Facebook bringing video ads to your news feed. I mean c'mon, what's not to like about auto-playing ads? Hey, at least you are getting Angry Birds Star Wars on Facebook now too. Facebook is still debating several product features, but has decided on this much to date, these executives said: By April at the latest, it will offer video advertisers the chance to target video ads to large numbers of Facebook users in their news feeds on both the desktop version of Facebook as well as on Facebook apps on mobile phones and tablets. The Year's Top Tech Fails Wired has posted its list of Top Tech Fails of 2012 today. The list is decent but I definitely think a few of this year's biggest tech fails are missing. 2012 saw the launch of a hundred dazzling new products and services ... and more than a few stinky duds. Apple Maps sent us driving straight into the desert instead of our intended town. Security fail after security fail left us scrambling to change our passwords and keep our digital identities secure. And stunning, colorful industrial design couldn't save Nokia from another dismal year of finances. Comments Read More ...

The list features the likes of Best Buy's former CEO and Zynga's current CEO, while Zuckerberg just barely missed it. Anyone you think should have made the list? Who are the absolute worst chief executives of 2012? Sydney Finkelstein thinks he knows. Limited Competition Results in Caps, Overages A new study by the Open Technology Institute found that bandwidth caps and high overages are the result of limited competition. "Data caps may be good for the short-term profits of broadband providers and please investors, but they are not benefiting innovation or access to the Internet," said OTI Policy Director Benjamin Lennett. "Costs for providing broadband connectivity are continuing to decline, yet Americans continue to face higher prices for a service that is no longer a luxury." Comments Read More ...
Government Says It Is Investigating Data Brokers The government has started an investigation into data brokers to determine whether they need to improve their privacy practices. This should be interesting. The Federal Trade Commission said Tuesday that it ordered nine data brokers to provide the agency with details about their sources of information, how they use the information they gather and whether consumers have access to the data. The consumer profiles assembled by data brokers allow advertisers and retailers to tailor marketing campaigns to specific customers. Comments Read More ...
No Link Between Video Games And Murder While it is painfully obvious to most people there is no link to video games and violence, it doesn't hurt to have solid data like this on your side when the discussion pops up. But it turns out that the data just doesn't support this connection. Looking at the world's 10 largest video game markets yields no evident, statistical correlation between video game consumption and gun-related killings. Comments Read More ...
