Intel Envisions Do-it-all 48-Core Mobile Processors Researchers at Intel have begun ground work on many-core processors that could drive ultra-mobile devices (such as tablets, smartphones, Ultrabooks, etc.,) in the near future. It design calls for no less than 48 processing cores on a piece of silicon, built on the "single-chip cloud computer" (SCC) design. The new technology could reach the markets anywhere between five to ten years from now, probably since current silicon fabrication technologies aren't advanced enough to put that much processing power into a chip that runs off a smartphone battery. "If we're going to have this technology in five to 10 years, we could finally do things that take way too much processing power today," said Patrick Moorhead, an analyst with Moor Insights and Strategy. "This could really open up our concept of what is a computer... The phone would be smart enough to not just be a computer but it could be my computer." With devices like Microsoft Surface, which transform from a tablet to a fully-functional desktop with a dock, or a notebook with the flip of a smart cover, the definition of what constitutes a personal computer is changing. In a few years, your mobile could transform into a computing device of any shape and size for consumers.

No Service Pack 2 for Windows 7: Report Microsoft has no plans to release a new service pack (SP) for Windows 7. Sources at Microsoft's engineering team told The Register that breaking precedent (of releasing a new SP every 2 or so years), Microsoft will not release SP2 (service pack 2) for the operating system. Apart from being a collection of important software updates over a period, a service pack allows Microsoft to introduce major updates to key components of the operating system, such as its kernel. Apparently, Microsoft's Windows team is too busy with Windows 8, and it is observed that by choosing to not release an SP, Microsoft could be pushing users to its newer OS. Instead of newer SPs for Windows 7, Microsoft will release timely updates for Windows 7 SP1 over Windows Update, till the operating system's support lifetime runs out (that's January 2020).

NVIDIA Announces GeForce GTX 680MX, GTX 675MX and GTX 670MX Mobile GPUs NVIDIA added three new high-performance mobile GPUs to its lineup, the GeForce GTX 680MX, GeForce GTX 675MX, and GeForce GTX 670MX. Based on the 28 nm GK104 silicon, the GTX 680MX topples GTX 680M as NVIDIA's (and perhaps, the world's) most powerful GPU for notebooks. While the GTX 680M features 1344 CUDA cores, with 720 MHz core and 3.60 GHz memory, the new GTX 680MX features 1536 CUDA cores, with the same 720 MHz clock speed, but faster 5.00 GHz memory. 2 GB of GDDR5 memory is standard issue for this chip. Moving on, NVIDIA created a new SKU that takes position between the Fermi architecture-based GTX 675M, and the GTX 680M. Called the GTX 675MX, the new SKU is also based on the GK104 silicon, but configured with 960 CUDA cores, and 2 GB of GDDR5 memory across a 256-bit wide memory interface. The core is clocked at 600 MHz, and memory at 3.60 GHz. The last of the three is the new GTX 670MX, based on the 28 nm GK106 silicon. Like the GTX 675MX, it is configured with 960 CUDA cores (the full compliment of GK106), but with a narrower memory interface, that's 192-bit wide. Its core is clocked at 600 MHz, and memory at 2.80 GHz. 2 GB GDDR5 is the standard memory amount. Expect a wave of performance notebooks and all-in-one desktops to feature these new chips.
