Mozilla Introduces Chrome-Like Downloader
Mozilla announced on Saturday on its Quality Blog that it is introducing a streamlined 'stub installer' to make the installation of its Firefox browser easier for Windows users. With Microsoft's Windows 8 launching at the end of the month (in four different editions — which includes its new Metro interface), the stub installer comes at the right time and will be able to detect the OS variant and serve the right version. Entire Cities Dead on Some World of Warcraft Realms
What started out on European servers and spread to US servers resulted in entire realms being killed off due to an exploit by hackers. A hotfix has now applied and servers should be back to normal operation. Blizzard takes a dim view of this exploit and is asking for any information relating to this disruption be sent to Blizzard. Kaspersky Adds Mugshot to Mobile Security Software
Kaspersky has made its 'Mugshot" feature, which was only available with Android Tablet Security, as a download on Kaspersky Mobile Security. The software will allow the owner of the phone to take a picture of the phone's thief (or present user) to help locate misplaced or stolen cell phones. Kaspersky said in a statement that it has introduced the feature to increase the chances of recovering a lost or stolen device as incidents of smartphone theft continue to rise. Comments

Disney's Wireless Wristband to Replace Tickets
The Walt Disney Company has filed for approval with the FCC to institute a wearable digital pass to replace the use of standard tickets in its theme parks. The 2.4 GHz spectrum wristwatch-like device will allow park entrance, admit wearers to rides, access hotel rooms and just about anything else you can do with short range RFID technology. Beyond allowing visitors to gain access to the parks, it's likely that the "Magic Band" will interact with turnstiles offering Disney's FastPass system. Comments

Barcode Birthday: 60 Years Since Patent Was Issued
Today marks the 60th anniversary of the patent grant for the utilitarian barcode. Sixty years you say? If you think it doesn't feel like it's been in use that long, you would be right. The Barcode was patented 60 years ago, but the technology to actually put it into practice didn't emerge for another 22 years. Patent or practical use doesn't really matter; the Barcode is passing a milestone and has changed the way we live. But the black-and-white stripes did not get a universal welcome, with some wine manufacturers refusing to incorporate barcodes onto their labels for aesthetic reasons. Comments

New Captcha System Uses Empathy for Human Response
It was bound to happen sooner or later: a politically correct reply to a Captcha question could replace the standard format. The new system is designed by a group named Civil Rights Defenders and if you guessed they are a human rights group, you win a prize. Civil Rights Defenders, the Swedish-based group that developed the tool, hopes the Civil Rights Captcha will help sites block spiders and bots, while letting humans in — and hopefully educating the humans at the same time. SpaceX Launches Its First Functional Mission to the ISS
The testing is over and SpaceX will begin a series of 12 scheduled missions to resupply the ISS with over 1k pounds of supplies per mission. The first mission commences on Sunday from Cape Canaveral at 11:35 PM EDT. While other cargo capsules are stuffed with what amounts to space-station trash and released to burn up in the atmosphere, SpaceX craft will return to Earth with thousands of pounds of scientific samples and used hardware. A Few More Twitter Employees Fly the Coop
If you are smart, you will not stand in front of the doors at Twitter's Headquarters. You are likely to be run over by fleeing employees. Twitter is experiencing even more high-level departures this week, with the exit of Mark McBride and Cynthia Johanson on Friday. The departures come on the heels of more exits as recent as last week, when New York engineering manager Ori Allon left the company, as well as a handful of designers and engineers. Comments
