RIM signs up to Microsoft's ExFAT file-system standard
Microsoft today announced that Research in Motion (RIM) is licensing Microsoft's ExFAT file system for use in BlackBerry mobile devices.Microsoft has also been increasingly successful at getting other tech companies to support ExFAT. For example, Apple incorporated ExFAT into Mac OS X "Lion" in 2011, providing interoperability for file storage between the Windows and Mac operating systems. And just over a month ago, Sharp licensed the ExFAT technology for use in its Android smartphones.

Lenovo acquires Stoneware to expand cloud products portfolio
Lenovo on Tuesday said it plans to acquire Stoneware, a small U.S. based company specializing in cloud products for schools and governments, as part of the PC maker's strategy to bolster its cloud computing offerings. While Lenovo did not disclose financial terms of the deal, it said it expects to complete the acquisition of the Indianapolis-based Stoneware by year's end.

Elusive TDL4 malware variant infected Fortune 500 companies, government agencies
Researchers from security vendor Damballa have identified malicious Internet traffic that they believe is generated by a new and elusive variant of the sophisticated TDL4 malware. The new threat, which has been assigned the generic name DGAv14 until its true nature is clarified, has affected at least 250,000 unique victims so far, including 46 of the Fortune 500 companies, several government agencies, and ISPs, the Damballa researchers said in a research paper released Monday.

Cloudian hopes to woo enterprises with free edition of storage platform
Cloudian has launched a free, community edition of its software and object-based storage platform, which can store up to 100TB and be integrated with Amazon's cloud, the company said on Tuesday. The Community Edition includes all of the functionality of the regular version of Cloudian's storage platform, which just like the company is called Cloudian. But users have to rely on forum support and the total storage capacity has been limited to 100TB.

Flame analysis reveals more cyber espionage malware
An analysis of servers used to control the Flame cyber espionage malware that mostly targeted computers in the Middle East indicate that several other related malware existed -- with one still operating. Kaspersky Lab, Symantec, and other researchers released details of their research on Monday. Other key findings indicated a highly sophisticated operation in which a variety of defensive mechanisms were used to cover the attackers' tracks.

Winklevoss twins invest $1 million in new social network SumZero
Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss, best known for their epic legal battle with Mark Zuckerberg over ownership rights to Facebook, have reportedly invested $1 million (£620,000) in a new social network aimed at the financial community, called SumZero. Founded by fellow Harvard alumni Divya Narendra and Aalap Mahadevia in 2008, SumZero has about 7,500 members. The network enables users to get advice from other investors, and spread the word about investments they have made.

Samsung begins producing next-gen DRAM for mobile phones, tablets
Samsung Electronics has started mass production of a new type of memory chip for mobile devices, LPDDR3, that will dramatically increase performance in future smartphones and tablets, it said Tuesday. The new memory, which meets a standard published in May, will allow future devices to play high-definition video in real time on larger mobile screens than is currently possible, Samsung said. The new RAM will allow data rates of 12.8GBps, much faster than the current generation of mobile RAM, which usually transfers at 8.5GBps.

Motorola launches Razr i smartphone with 2GHz Intel Atom processor
Google-owned Motorola Mobility has launched its first smartphone with an Atom processor from Intel, the companies announced at an event in London on Tuesday. The Razr i is the first smartphone with a 2.0GHz Atom Z2460 processor: Existing Atom smartphones run at 1.6GHz. The faster clock speed will result in smoother browsing and better video performance, according to Eric Read, general manager for Intel's Mobile and Communications group.

If you follow cloud computing, you're no doubt familiar with software as a service, typically associated with Salesforce.com, or infrastructure as a service, which was pioneered by Amazon.com. But how about CaaS, SECaaS, DaaS, MaaS and BaaS? According to industry consortium The Open Group, these new "as-a-service" acronyms fall into the category of XaaS (pronounced "zass"), a generalization for all cloud-related services per the NIST definition.

Apple keeps top spot in customer satisfaction
