EMC confirms CEO change at VMware unit
Paul Maritz will step down from his role as CEO of VMware, to be replaced by EMC Chief Operating Officer Pat Gelsinger, EMC confirmed on Tuesday. Maritz will instead become chief strategist of EMC, which is the majority owner of VMware. The news confirmed rumors of a change in VMware's leadership that had swirled throughout the day.

Motorola's Xoom tablet does not infringe on Apple's designs, German court rules
Motorola's Xoom tablet (called the Xyboard in the U.S.) does not infringe on some of Apple's community designs, the regional court of Dusseldorf ruled on Tuesday. Apple wanted a Europe-wide ban on the Motorola tablet, a court spokesman said.

Microsoft could face billions in new fines over browser choice
European Union (EU) antitrust regulators today threatened Microsoft with more fines, potentially massive ones in the billions of dollars, after the company failed to make good on its promise to offer consumers there a choice of browsers. The EU's chief regulator, Joaquin Almunia, talked tough. "If the facts are confirmed, [I will] use the legal instruments at my disposal to deter and to punish [Microsoft]."

DHS warns of vulnerabilities in widely used Niagara software
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has issued an alert warning of vulnerabilities in a software technology called the Niagara AX Framework, used to manage millions of devices over the Internet. The alert, from the DHS' Industrial Control System Cyber Emergency Response Team (ICS-CERT) security group, is addressed to organizations that are using Niagara software to remotely control via the Internet industrial control systems, heating, lighting and security equipment, building automation devices and other systems.
