Watch an Asteroid Fly by Earth Live on Sunday
Sunday will be a good day to get a live action glimpse of a passing asteroid as seen by the Slooh robotic telescope service. The asteroid is approximately 3000 feet wide and passing by at a distance of 3.2 million miles, posing no risk to Earth. Be patient, the big one is out there and will be here on December 21st.


The show will start at 4:30 p.m. Pacific (7:30 Eastern) with images from the Slooh telescope in the Canary Islands.

Dell Launching Ubuntu Developer Laptop this Year
Dell has decided to go from the experimental stage to concept and on to production this year with the project known as Sputnik. The project will join Ubuntu 12.04 with a tweaked version of Dell's XPS Ultrabook, and will target mainly software developers in select markets.


Sputnik will officially launch this year and will be available to consumers in select markets. The company says that it is incorporating feedback from developers into the plan.

Third Largest Spam Botnet Shut Down
Thanks to the ongoing efforts of security researchers, the Grum botnet, responsible for approximately 18% of spam worldwide has been shut down. The systems were sending out 18 Billion spam messages daily through a network of zombie PC's.


This botnet was run by servers in Russia and Ukraine. Ukraine "has been a safe haven for bot herders in the past and shutting down any servers there has never been easy"

Mozilla Releases Firefox 15 Beta
Firefox 14 is barely out the door and Mozilla has already put the beta for the next release, Firefox 15, out for downloading. The biggest draw to participate in an early beta would be to test out the improvements in preventing memory leaks, which FF15 addresses nicely along with a few more timely improvements.


The bottom line is that the changes in Firefox 15 mean that many users with add-ons installed will see significant reductions in Firefox's memory consumption.

Russian Hacker Staying One step Ahead of Apple
While the engineers over at Apple were struggling with the problem of creating a fix for the iOS purchase exploit, the very same Russian hacker is busy hacking OS X with basically the same exploit. Some days it just doesn't pay to even get out of bed.


Basically, Borodin is taking advantage of Apple's shortsightedness when it comes to in-app purchases.

Kayak Closes IPO Day with Shares Up Nearly 30%
Take that Facebook! Regardless of its checkered past, Kayak bided their time until the timing was right for another IPO attempt. The wait proved profitable, with the stock trading up 30% over opening set price.


The prospectus shows that Kayak has 38.5 million shares outstanding after its IPO, giving the company a market cap today of just about $1.27 billion.

Silicon Valley Job Growth Roars Back
Looking for a position in the tech sector? Pack your bags and head out for California…..Silicon Valley to be exact. While the full-blown recovery is still a ways down the road, Silicon Valley is leading the charge back into good times for the tech sector.


California itself added 38,300 jobs last month, and the Bay Area accounted for 44 percent of the job gains. It was also 21 percent of the job gains for the entire nation.

Google Acquires Sparrow, Team to Focus on 'New Projects'
If you are a Sparrow customer and haven't received the word from Sparrow's CEO Dom Leca yet, there is bad news on the horizon for you. Google has bought the Sparrow email client along with the design team. Sparrow will now be incorporated into Google's Gmail, but the client will continue to function on its own for an unspecified amount of time.


Google has struggled with its Gmail app for iOS. The company likely brought the Sparrow team in to help improve its Gmail experience on iOS and Mac, as well as potentially Android and PCs

Digg to Be Reborn on August 1
Digg is dead. Long live Digg!! In the spirit of the Walking Dead, Digg is digging itself out of a premature grave and waking up from the dirt nap on August 1st. Betaworks, the new owners of Digg have decided to launch a redesigned version of the news app.


Digg is worth protecting, said the Betaworks boys. "We acquired Digg because we all need a product to help find, read, and understand what the Internet is talking about right now," they said.

Microsoft Reportedly Working on Stylus for Any LCD Screen
Microsoft is going to the ends of the Earth to prove that the touch interface feature in the upcoming Windows 8 operating system is a viable cross platform tool. If the reports hold true, Microsoft is already in the development stage of creating a working prototype to turn any LCD into a touch screen.


If the new Microsoft stylus concept were to become available, it would allow precise stylus use on any display, even on those that aren't already touch-sensitive.

IKEA is going high tech….well at least that will apply to its catalogues. While anyone can have a plain old informative printed catalogue, IKEA takes it several steps further immersing the reader with a new experience in print advertising.


"It became a really interesting exercise, and opened a whole world of opportunities," Dahlqvist said. "We realized we could tap into a whole new way of digital innovation."
