Comcast Protests "Shake Down" of Alleged Pirates
Wow, who would've thought that Comcast of all companies would be on the side of the pirates? Ahem, I mean "alleged" pirates.

Comcast has run out of patience with the avalanche of BitTorrent lawsuits in the United States. The ISP is now refusing to comply with court-ordered subpoenas, arguing that they are intended to "shake down" subscribers by coercing them to pay settlements. Copyright holders have responded furiously to Comcast's new stance, claiming that the ISP is denying copyright holders the opportunity to protect their works.

Tech Predictions From 10 Years Ago Today
You know, I absolutely love our 10 Years Ago Today button. Without it, I wouldn't even have remembered this quote:

Dan Vivoli said that this kit should permit the replication of certain effects used in CG movies, in real time on NVIDIA's next 3D chip (NV30). He has also stated that graphics cards available in 5 to 10 years will reproduce any CG movie.

Why We Need Software Patents
I like these kinds of articles. It's almost like smacking a hornets nest with a big stick.

In last week's ZDNet Great Debate, I argued in defense of software patents. This is not a popular position among heavy internet users, even though it is the current state of the law and industry practice, and in the popular vote I lost 89% to 11.

Politicians Call For Internet Bill of Rights
Hip, hip, hooray! Hip, hip, hooray! The politicians are here to save the internet! Yay! Don't act like you aren't excited, I have complete faith this will fix everything.

Speaking at a technology conference in New York on Monday, Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) and Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) called for a "digital bill of rights" to protect Internet users from intrusive legislation. The two lawmakers said the protections are necessary to prevent Congress from passing bills that stifle Internet freedom, pointing to the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and Protect Intellectual Property Act (PIPA).

Groupon Names Your Baby For $1,000
Holy hell, this is definitely a great deal! So good in fact, I might just have another kid just to take advantage of it! Who wouldn't want their kid named "Clembough?" On a serious note, this is a weird publicity / marketing stunt, even for Groupon.

Limit one per parent, unless you have twins, triplets or quadruplets, in which case you can buy one per child. Groupon, the official World's Foremost Authority in Baby Naming™ , will name your child or children "Clembough". No substitutes or modifications. Spelling non-negotiable. Any attempt to name your child "Clembough" independent of this exclusive Groupon will be recognized by the world as a cheap imitation. If you fail to contact Groupon on or before the expiration date to have your progeny anointed Clembough, we will reject you and refund every penny of the purchase price.
