Study: $37B Annually To Pre-Screen YouTube Videos
This is one of those studies where you naturally assume that someone just pulled this number out of their ass...until you see the math.

This brings the final cost of screening all video uploaded to YouTube at its current rate to $36,829,468,840 per year. Yes, that's nearly $37 billion per year. That is a massive additional cost to expect from Google to cover a thorough analysis of all video being uploaded. And this excludes the immense backlog of video YouTube already hosts. This would require 199,584 judges to be hired as screeners.

What exactly does a person do at an "anti-botnet summit" that can't be handled with a simple memo? Is there really a need for a "summit?"

Julian Assange Loses Appeal Against Extradition
In case anyone even cares what happens to this guy anymore, Julian Assange has lost his appeal to the U.K. Supreme Court. He can still appeal to the European Court of Human Rights but, for the most part, his days of stalling are over.

Julian Assange founder of Wikileaks, the whistle-blowing website, lost his appeal in the highest British Court against extradition to Sweden on rape and sexual molestation charges. Assange's defense argument was that the Swedish prosecutor who issued the European Arrest Warrant demanding his extradition was not a valid judicial authority.

The French courts sided with YouTube today ruling that the company is not obligated to control content of uploaded material.

Should Websites Charge To Process Copyright Takedowns?
Charging a fee to process copyright takedowns is quite possibly one of the stupidest things I have heard in a long time. Seriously?

Every day copyright holders send out countless notices which order BitTorrent indexes, cyberlockers, forums, blogs and search engines to remove links to allegedly infringing content. The process is time consuming for everyone involved. So, since time is money, shouldn't those being burdened by the actions of third parties be compensated for their work? One anti-piracy company says charging for takedowns amounts to extortion.

Microsoft Invades Iraq
I'm not sure how well any of Microsoft's products are going to sell in Iraq but the company can at least lay claim to having a local distributor for its products. Thanks to Travis Nay for the link.

Microsoft Corp. says it has appointed a local company to distribute its products in Iraq in what it says is a sign of growth for the war-plagued country. Manager of Business Development for Emerging Markets Rajai S. El-Khadem said Monday that the software giant had chosen the Baghdad-based Legend Lands Co. as its Iraqi partner.

Phanteks PH-TC14PE Heatsink
The gang at FrostyTech had a lot of nice things to say about the Phanteks PH-TC14PE heatsink. If you are color matching your system, these coolers from Phanteks might be just what you are looking for.

The Phanteks PH-TC14PE itself is a pretty standard dual tower, five-8mm-heatpipe-packing heatsink that retails for about $90 bucks. It stands 168mm tall and has a wide 144x161mm footprint that may have clearance issues on some motherboards where RAM slots and VRM heatsinks are too tall, too near the CPU socket. The cooler weighs upwards of 1250 grams and ships with two 140mm PWM fans arranged in a push-pull configuration.

Assassin's Creed Lawsuit Update
While I don't have a link to this one just yet, we do have the press release stating that Beiswenger has "settled" with GameTrailers and voluntarily dismissed his action against Ubisoft regarding the Assassin's Creed copyright infringement. I'll post more info when I get it, here is a link to the original story.

On April 17, 2012, American author and research engineer, John L. Beiswenger, filed a lawsuit against Ubisoft Entertainment S.A. and its subsidiary companies, and Gametrailers, Inc., alleging that the storyline behind the popular Assassin's Creed franchise features many similarities to one of his novels, LINK. On May 18, 2012, Gametrailers reached a confidential settlement with Beiswenger under undisclosed terms. On May 29, 2012, Beiswenger exercised his right as a federal litigant to voluntarily dismiss the action against the Ubisoft defendants, without prejudice. There has not been any adjudication on the merits of Beiswenger's infringement claims.

Kelley Clements Keller, Esq., legal representative for Beiswenger, said, "My client's decision to exercise his right to voluntarily dismiss the action, without prejudice, in no way diminishes his stalwart conviction in the merit of his claims against Ubisoft. He is unwavering in his belief that many key components of the Assassin's Creed video game franchise infringe on many key components of his novel, LINK. We believe Ubisoft has engaged in egregious acts of copyright infringement and, should he choose to seek redress through the courts in the future, we remain confident that a trier of fact would agree."

40% of Accounts on Social Networks Are Spam
40% of accounts on social networks are spam? How can you tell? If you look at my Facebook page, everything looks like spam...especially the crap I post.

Spammers create as many as 40 percent of the accounts on social-media sites, according to Risher. About 8 percent of messages sent via social pages are spam, approximately twice the volume of six months ago, he says. Spammers use the sharing features on social sites to spread their messages.

Curt Schilling Blames R.I. For Troubles
And the public pissing match continues. At this point, the only thing we know for sure is that Schilling and Chafee are both idiots.

"The governor is not operating in the best interest of the company by any stretch, or the taxpayers, or the state," Schilling told the newspaper. "We're trying to save this company and we're working 24/7. The public commentary has been as big a piece of what's happening to us as anything out there."
