Deal of the week: SSDs, RAM, and other three-letter acronyms
This week's deal post is all about three-letter acronyms and initialisms. Let's start with SSDs: Newegg is running one of its Shell Shocker promotions on Corsair's Force Series GT 120GB solid-state drive, bringing it down to $149.99 shipped, or a tantalizing $119.99 after a mail-in rebate.
The Force GT 120GB earned our TR Editor's Choice award for its excellent performance and attractive price. The drive was second only to OCZ's Vertex 3 120GB in our tests , and ...

Key specs for Intel-powered Windows 8 tablets revealed
What will Intel-powered Windows 8 tablets look like? At the Intel Developer Forum in Bejing this week, Intel disclosed its proposed specifications for those devices. CNet News has the scoop.
The site says Win8-toting Intel tablets will come in two flavors: "pure" 10-inch designs, and "hybrid" 11-inch machines with physical keyboards. I'm guessing the hybrid models might take after Asus' Eee Pad ...

Intel recommends standardization for ultrabook batteries
At the Intel Developer Forum in Beijing, China, Intel is advocating a standardized battery design for ultrabooks. Although the firm concedes that high-end ultrabook chassis may require custom batteries for "industrial design reasons," it argues that standardization would allow mainstream ultrabooks to hit lower price points. Savings of 5-10% are quoted in the presentation slides posted by Liliputing. Standardization would also make it easier for notebook makers to source batteries, the slides contend.
Intel is proposing a battery with a footprint of 60 x 80 mm. It would use standard cylindrical cells measuring 16 mm in diameter, the sweet spot for capacity, size, and energy density, according to ...

When super-sized smartphones become pocketable tablets
I thought I lost my smartphone the other week. Somewhere between walking my dog in the morning and heading out for lunch, my trusty Palm Pre vanished into thin air. I tried calling it with Skype but heard no ring. Next, I retraced that morning's route. It had been raining steadily, making the odds of survival low for an unprotected electronics device. Even if it lay lifeless, I was at least determined to recover the body. Leave no technology behind.
As I trudged through the park, my eyes scanning every shrub my dog had sniffed, I found myself not bummed out about losing the phone ...

Indilinx infused OCZ SSDs feature Marvell controller silicon
OCZ acquired controller maker Indilinx more than a year ago. Since then, it's been tight-lipped about the Indilinx Everest controllers that anchor its Octane and Vertex 4 SSDs. Perhaps now we know why. AnandTech has learned that the controller chips bearing Indilinx's name are, in fact, Marvell hardware. The original Everest controller is a Marvell 88SS9174, which purportedly runs at higher clock speeds than versions of the chip employed by other SSDs. The Everest 2 controller associated with the Vertex 4 is believed to be Marvell's next-gen 88SS9187. OCZ has confirmed that its Octane, Vertex 4, and Petrol SSDs all use Marvell controller silicon.

EA teases next Crysis game
Crysis 3 appears to be on the way. Though we've yet to see a proper announcement, GameSpot reports that a listing for the game appeared and then disappeared from EA's Origin website. The site even caught a screenshot of the flub.
The game, titled Crysis 3 Limited Edition , was listed for $49.99 as a direct download for the PC. If you think the "3" in the title was just a typo, think again—the box art showed a nanosuit-clad soldier drawing ...
