Maarten Visser, the CEO of Meetroo and a decade-long Microsoft partner, stumbled upon the road map a week ago after clicking on a link posted on Microsoft's Dutch website. Firefox click-to-play feature will stop automated plug-in exploits
Mozilla developers are working on a new Firefox feature that will block the automated display of plug-in-based content like Flash videos, Java applets or PDF files, and will protect users from attacks that exploit vulnerabilities in browser plug-ins to install malware on their computers. Known as "click to play," this feature has been present in the popular NoScript Firefox security extension for many years, as well as in other browsers like Google Chrome and Opera.

IBM acquires BI software provider Varicent
Adding to its already considerable line of analysis software and expertise, IBM announced Friday that it has acquired business intelligence software provider Varicent Software. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Based on Toronto, Varicent was a privately held company founded in 2003. It has over 180 corporate customers, including banks, insurance companies, retailers, information technology and telecommunications providers. Starwood Hotels, Hertz and Office Depot have used the company's products.

Microsoft battles delays in Windows Phone app approvals
Microsoft is battling to reduce the time it takes to approve and publish Windows Phone apps, and to improve the responsiveness of its developer portal App Hub, following complaints from developers, the company said in a blog post on Thursday. The company appears to have underestimated the strain a growing number of applications and more stores would put on its infrastructure.

Splashtop's new app brings Windows 8 UI to iPad
Splashtop on Thursday released a new tablet application that replicates the Windows 8 touch-driven Metro user interface on the iPad, which should help developers test applications for Microsoft's next OS without investing in a Windows tablet. The "Win8 Metro Testbed -- powered by Splashtop" remote desktop application provides a way for developers to test gestures and functionality of their Windows 8 applications on the iPad. The app replicates the Windows 8 UI, and developers will be able to test specific touch-driven applications.

Oracle to issue 88 security patches
Oracle is planning to release 88 patches on Tuesday, covering vulnerabilities affecting a wide array of its products, according to a pre-release announcement posted to its website on Thursday. Tuesday's scheduled patch release is larger than Oracle's last quarterly critical patch update in January, when it released 78 fixes.

Microsoft to start charging for Bing search API
Microsoft will begin charging developers to use the API (application programming interface) for its Bing search engine, the company announced Thursday. Developers will pay a minimum monthly subscription fee of US$40, Microsoft said. It will collect the fee through the Windows Azure Marketplace, where the API will be hosted. All users will move to the pay-per-use regime within a few months, it said.
