Virgin Mobile customers nationwide unable to use data and texting
For all the Virgin Mobile customers out there, we hope to bring you an important service announcement regarding your cell phone. Virgin Mobile is currently experiencing a nationwide data and texting outage, as confirmed by many users and Virgin Mobile's official Twitter feed. A representative for the company posted "We're currently experiencing a national data & text messaging outage. Our engineers are working to resolve it. Thank you for your patience," on the Twitter feed around 4 p.m. Pacific time.

Curiously enough, Sprint, who owns the company, and its users have reported no issues on the Sprint Network. Virgin Mobile officials have been oddly silent on the cause of the issue. It could possibly be in relation to the upcoming data throttling changes that go into effect in 3 days. Do you have Virgin Mobile? Are you experiencing the outage? Let us know regarding that and your thoughts regarding the changes to unlimited data.

RumorTT: Microsoft ban certain staff members from purchasing Macs, iPads
Bit of a strange one here, but I guess it can make sense, too. According to a leaked e-mail from Alain Crozier, the chief financial officer of Microsoft's Sales, Marketing, Services, IT, & Operations Group (SMSG), Microsoft may install a policy that prevents employees from using corporate funds to purchase Macs and iPads.

rumortt_microsoft_ban_certain_staff_members_from_purchasing_macs_ipads
The e-mail was passed onto a ZDNet writer, in its entirety below:

From: Alain Crozier
Sent: Wednesday, March 14, 2012 1:17 PM

Subject: Apple Purchases

Within SMSG we are putting in place a new policy that says that Apple products (Mac & iPad) should not be purchased with company funds.

In the US we will be turning off the Apple products from the Zones Catalog next week, which is the standard purchasing mechanism for these products.

Outside of the US - we will work with your finance and procurement teams to send the right message and put the right processes in place.

The current purchase levels are low, however we recognize there will be a bit of transition work associated with this. Details of historical purchases in the US are provided in the attachment to help understand the changes that will be needed.Thank you for your support and leadership on this.

Alain Crozier
CFO | WW Sales, Marketing & Services Group
WW SMSG Finance

The funny thing is, ZDNet reached out to Microsoft to ask if the e-mail was indeed real, where a Microsoft spokesperson said that the company had no comment. Usually, no comment would leave one to believe that there's no confirmation, and no denial. Is this fact? We should find out very soon.

People will knock MS for doing this, but why shouldn't they? Using corporate funds to buy your competitors devices? Come on.

Telltale Games show off 'The Walking Dead' game trailer
AMC's 'The Walking Dead' has been a smash hit thus far, and I personally enjoy it. The series was inspired by Robert Kirkman's award-winning comic series, and now Telltale Games have released their trailer for the upcoming game based on the same original series.

The Walking Dead's lead designer Sean Vanaman says that the game is more along the lines of the comic book than the television series. Where within the game universe of The Walking Dead, a new set of characters is introduced, led by Lee Everett, but the same zombie apocalypse timeline remains roughly the same. What makes this game stand out is that players will be given the the decision to make difficult moral decisions that will affect gameplay across the entier series.

Graphics-wise, we should expect a blend of 2D and 3D models, which are said to be presented in a way that it pays homage to the original comic book artwork. Kirkman has said:

Telltale has done a phenomenal job in making a game that meets the expectations of fans. Running around with a gun isn't what The Walking Dead is about; it's about how people caught in an apocalypse deal with facing their own death every day, and the horrible choices they have to make to survive. Telltale's game series has captured the spirit of the comic books perfectly.

The Walking Dead will arrive in monthly episodes on the Xbox Live Marketplace for the Xbox 360, the PlayStation Network for PS3 owners, as well as the PC and Mac through the Telltake Online Store. Pricing on the game is set at 400 Microsoft Points, $4.99, and an annual pass for $24.99 for the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC/Mac, respectively. Pre-orders are being accepted now, with a 10-percent discount and the opportunity to join the case and "die a horrible death" in the game. The first episode is slated for a release in late-April.

Hard Reset players get free upgrade to Extended Edition
Hard Reset's parents, Flying Wild Hog, have confirmed that the upcoming expansion content will be free to those who have already purchased the game. Retail shelves saw the release "Hard Reset: Extended Edition", which sports extra content. This version will replace the current Steam version, and will replace it in late-April or early-May, where the price should increase from $19.99 to $29.99.

The game launched at $29.99, but with all of the extra content, that's still not bad considering most AAA+ titles are nearly $100 here in Australia. But, where things are different for this game is that whoever owns an original copy, will be upgraded to the new Extended Edition for free.

The game launched to a mixed reaction, where some loved the feel of the game and compared it to old school first-person shooters, where others hated it citing it was too short and too few enemies. The new Extended Edition hopes to shake things up introducing new weapons, enemies (including a boss), five more campaign levels, and two new survival mode levels.

Intel Ivy Bridge Overclocking with the Core i7 3770K and Core i5 3570K CPUs
Editor Note: Intel or GIGABYTE did not sanction this preview in any way. We are posting this well ahead of launch since some other well-known tech sites have already covered Ivy Bridge performance and the CPU is readily available and for sale right now.

Introduction

ivy_bridge_overclocking_with_the_core_i7_3770k_and_core_i5_3570k
I literally feel like a zombie right now. In the last 48 hours I've done so much testing it passes the threshold of being funny. I'm almost at the point where I wish I could just write "blah blah blah" let the pictures do the talking. As tempting as that is, though, I wouldn't and will instead get a bit of an introduction out for you right now.

I only say a bit of an introduction out because to be honest, we don't have to do that much talking about what's going on here today. Over the last few days we've taken the chance to preview the upcoming Ivy Bridge platform in the following ways.

We started off with a look at the upcoming Intel i5 3570k and then followed that up with a look at the upcoming Intel i7 3770k. If that wasn't enough to get your taste buds tingling then the Ivy Bridge High-Speed RAM Run with G.Skill PC3-20800 2666MHz RipjawsZ should've sealed the deal.

But something was missing! Overclocking results on the new processors and a look at just how performance goes when we overclock them. Because we've covered the GIGABYTE Z77X-UD5H already along with both processors there's not a real need to go into too much detail again. Instead we'll just get into the testbed side of things and cover how we went with overclocking.

Once we've done that it's simply a matter of getting into the benchmarks and seeing just what kind of performance is on offer from the upcoming chips that are set to be released next month. So without any further ado, let's just get into it and see what exactly is going on.

Great value with up to 38% better price performance1 and up to 19% less power per core2 than the competition;

ECC memory and server reliability features at a low price-point;

Fast hardware payback - In as few as 7 months hosting fees can cover hardware costs - up to 14% quicker than with the competition3;

Efficient economics for the Cloud with twice the core density per rack4.

"In today's economic environment, dedicated hosting providers need their data centers to become profit centers faster than ever," said Patrick Patla, corporate vice president and general manager, Commercial Business, AMD. "With the new AMD Opteron 3000 Series platform, Web and Cloud customers no longer have to compromise with desktop-class platforms in order to hit certain price points. Now they have all the benefits of a true server-class product at desktop-class price points. This helps rapidly-growing hosting customers achieve fast payback in their incredibly dense, power-efficient environments."

Since the launch of its new core server architecture, and AMD Opteron 4200 and 6200 Series processors last November, AMD unveiled a disruptive server strategy and intentions to leverage its leading graphics IP while driving down the power in future SoC offerings. As part of accelerating this, AMD recently announced it had entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Cloud pioneer SeaMicro.

Today AMD has delivered on its promise of a low-power, single-socket solution that brings server functionality with desktop economics. The AMD Opteron 3000 Series platform is targeted to the dense, power efficient 1P Web hosting/Web server market. Available in either 4- or 8-core CPUs, the AMD Opteron 3200 Series processor is shipping today in platforms from MSI, Tyan, Fujitsu and Dell. Based on the "Bulldozer" core, the AMD Opteron 3000 Series platform leverages Socket AM3+ and provides customers with the cost savings associated with a "desktop-like" infrastructure, yet still offers server-class reliability, enterprise-class silicon validation/testing, security features and server OS certification.

"AMD is a great partner, and we're excited about the new AMD Opteron 3200 Series CPU. It allows us to create a custom design for our DCS customers, and deliver a compelling combination of performance and energy efficiency, " says Dell Data Center Solutions' Steve Cumings.
