I-O Data Also Unveils a 14x Blu-ray Writer
Following on Buffalo's footsteps, I-O Data is coming up with its own internal optical drive capable of writing Blu-ray discs at up to 14x speeds. Dubbed BRD-S14X, the burner in question takes up one 5.25-inch bay, it has SATA connectivity, 4 MB of buffer memory, and offers writing speeds of 14x for BD-R SL (single-layer), 12x for BD-R DL, 6x for BDXL (3/4-layer), 2x for BD-RE, 16x for DVD-R/+R, 8x for DVD-R/+R DL/+RW, 6x for DVD-RW, 5x for DVD-RAM, 48x for CD-R and 24x for CD-RW.
The BRD-S14X comes with a one-year warranty and costs $162. Availability is slated for March 31st.

(PR) HPC Server Market Delivers Record Revenues and 8.4% Growth in 2011
Worldwide factory revenue for the high performance computing (HPC) technical server market increased by 8.4% in full-year 2011 to reach a record $10.3 billion, up from $9.5 billion in 2010, according to the newly released International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide High-Performance Technical Server QView. The 2011 results exceeded IDC's forecast of 7.2% year-over-year revenue growth.
Unit shipments in 2011 declined 6.9% year over year as average selling prices grew, indicating a continued shift to large system sales. IBM and HP ended the year in a statistical tie for leadership with 32.6% and 32.1% of overall factory revenue market share, respectively. (Note: IDC declares a statistical tie in the worldwide server market when there is less than one percent difference in the factory revenues of two or more vendors.)

AREA Intros VGA Down-Scan Converter
AREA introduced the SD-DSCV, a VGA down-scan converter device, that lets you convert your PC's VGA output to legacy/TV-compatible outputs such as Composite and S-Video. The converter supports output resolutions up to 1024x768 pixels, with TV formats such as PAL and NTSC. What's more, the VGA connection isn't interrupted, and VGA output can run simultaneously with the other analog outputs. Measuring 91 x 66 x 24 mm, the device requires an external DC power input, but instead of a bulky AC adapter, AREA included a USB-DC cable, that lets you plug the device to a USB port, and draw power from it. Slated for April 09, the SD-DSCV from AREA is priced as low as 4,980 JPY (US $59.4).

I-O Data Announces a New 23.6-inch Monitor
Japanese firm I-O Data has today unveiled a new addition to its monitor line-up, the LCD-MF242E widescreen which features a 23.6-inch LED-backlit (TN) panel, a native resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels, a 5 ms response time, and the ECO power-saving function.
I-O Data's monitor also has a maximum brightness of 300 cd/m2, a 1,000:1 contrast ratio (5,000,000:1 DCR), D-Sub, DVI and HDMI inputs, and two 2 W speakers. The LCD-MF242E is backed by a three-year warranty and will go on sale in mid-April at about $237.

Green House Intros PicoDrive Micro USB Flash Drives
Japanese company Green House introduced the PicoDrive Micro line of compact USB 2.0 flash drives. When inserted, the drives stick out just 9 mm from the port. These are available in capacities of 4 GB, 8 GB, and 16 GB. Measuring 22.6 x 14.9 x 8.5 mm, weighing 3.1 g. Green House emphasized the term "Ultrabook" in its press-release, indicating that it's the Ultrabook crowd it's trying to woo, although flash drives of this size (or even smaller) aren't entirely new. The 4 GB, 8 GB, and 16 GB variants are priced at 1,480 JPY (US $17.7), 2,980 JPY (US $35.6), and 4,980 JPY (US $59.5), respectively.

GK110 Specifications Approximated
Even as launch of the GK104-based GeForce GTX 680 nears, it's clear that it is emerging that it is not the fastest graphics processor in the GeForce Kepler family, if you sift through the specifications of the GK110 (yes, 110, not 100). Apparently, since GK104 meets or even exceeds the performance expectations of NVIDIA, the large-monolithic chip planned for this series, is likely codenamed GK110, and it's possible that it could get a GeForce GTX 700 series label.
3DCenter.org approximated the die size of the GK110 to be around 550 mm², 87% larger than that of the GK104. Since the chip is based on the 28 nm fab process, this also translates to a large increment in transistor count, up to 6 billion. The shader compute power is up by just around 30%, because the CUDA core count isn't a large increment (2000~2500 cores). The SMX (streaming multiprocessor 10) design could also face some changes. NVIDIA could prioritize beefing up other components than the CUDA cores, which could result in things such as a 512-bit wide GDDR5 memory interface. The maximum power consumption is estimated to be around 250~300 Watts. Its launch cannot be expected before August, 2012.

Intel Culls High-TDP "Cactus Ridge" Thunderbolt Controller
Intel has reportedly discontinued one of its "Cactus Ridge" family of Thunderbolt controllers, the L3510H. This controller has relatively high TDP of 3.4W, and a low-power part in the same family, the L3510L, already exists. The L3510L has a slightly lower TDP, at 2.8W. The difference may not seem much, but could impact notebook battery life. The L3510 "Cactus Ridge" family consists of 4-channel Thunderbolt controllers, with smaller package-size (12 x 12 mm) compared to the 82523EF "Light Ridge" controller family, with its larger (15 x 15 mm) package sizes. The final samples of "Cactus Ridge" chips will reach customers only by mid-April.

Windows 8 Launches in October, x86 and ARM Simultaneously
We know from a slightly older article, that the first variants of Windows will be released to market some time in Q4-2012. A new report by Bloomberg pin-points that to October, exactly 3 years after the market-launch of Windows 7. Further, Microsoft should launch Windows 8 for both x86 and ARM machine architectures around the same time, in what could be a breather for tablet and low-cost netbook designers. Despite that, there are fewer ARM devices running Windows 8, which will launch around that time, than x86 notebooks/PCs. With an October 2012 launch Microsoft should be able to target shoppers in the crucial winter shopping season, in mature markets, according to Bloomberg Analysts.

MSI Radeon HD 7970 Lightning Overclocked to 1800 MHz Core, 7.70 GHz Memory
If you thought MSI made too much song and dance about the product design of its R7970 Lightning, particularly the GPU Reactor module, think again. When augmented with liquid nitrogen cooling, the card has the electrical muscle required to sustain 1.7V, and facilitate a staggering 1800 MHz core clock speed, with 1925 MHz memory (7.70 GHz GDDR5 effective), churning out a gargantuan memory bandwidth of close to 370 GB/s, all thanks to the genius of Swedish proverclocker Elmor.
This R7970 Lightning on 'roid-rage was stable enough to bag a 3DMark 11 (performance preset) score of P15035 points. The rest of the test-bed consisted of an Intel Core i7-3960X Extreme Edition six-core chip clocked at 5207 MHz, with 4 GB (4x 1 GB) DDR3 memory clocked at 2314 MHz, and MSI Big Bang XPower II motherboard, to seat it all. Perhaps this is an indication that AMD Radeon HD 7900 can work wonders on potent non-reference designs, such as MSI's R7970 Lightning.

AMD Readies Two More FX Series Processors
AMD launched as many as five new FX Series processor models over the course of Q1, 2012. We're hearing from DonanimHaber that two more budget models are en route for Q2, 2012, likely April. These include the quad-core FX-4130, and six-core FX-6130. The FX-4130 features a nominal clock speed of 3.80 GHz, with a tiny Turbo Core boost, that takes it to 3.90 GHz. Interestingly, while the total L2 cache of this chip is 4 MB (2 MB per module), its L3 cache is halved to 4 MB, even as other SKUs such as the FX-4100 have full 8 MB L3 cache. The FX-6130, on the other hand, has a nominal clock speed of 3.60 GHz, with 3.90 GHz Turbo Core speed. Thankfully, AMD didn't tinker with the L3 cache, and users get all 8 MB of it. Both chips have rated TDP of 125W. Pricing is not revealed.

Factory-Overclocked GeForce GTX 680 by MSI and EVGA get Listed
North American retailer NCIX listed two factory-overclocked NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680 graphics card models. NCIX did not list these two for pre-order, but enabled "Add to Wishlist", which probably notifies those with the product in their wishlists of when they are in stock. Both cards are priced at US $578.20 (incl. free shipping to contiguous US states). The clock speeds of MSI's card, which carries the part number "N680GTX-PM2D 2GD5/OC" was revealed to be 1056 MHz (core) with 6 GHz (GDDR5 effective memory); while those of EVGA's card, which carries the part number "02G-P4-2682-KR", were not revealed. We know from its clearly-mentioned brand extension "SuperClocked", that it's factory-overclocked.

Worldwide PC shipment growth for 2011 ended on a slightly positive note, growing to 1.8% on the year, according to the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly PC Tracker. While the first half of 2012 is expected to see only modest shipment growth, the launch of Windows 8 and the excitement generated by ultrabooks and other ultra-thin notebooks should drive second half sales in a much stronger way.
For much of 2011, vendors struggled to maintain consumer interest in a market beset by a tenuous economic recovery and disrupted by emerging computing devices. The lack of interest was evidenced by a lackluster Christmas season. Mature markets such as the United States and Western Europe, in particular, had a rough year, with PC shipments in 2011 shrinking by 9% compared to 2010.
