Open source code libraries suffer from vulnerabilities
A study of how 31 popular open source code libraries were downloaded over the past 12 months found that more than a third of the 1,261 versions of these libraries had a known vulnerability and about a quarter of the downloads were tainted. The study was undertaken by Aspect Security, which evaluates software for vulnerabilities, with Sonatype, a firm that provides a central repository housing more than 300,000 libraries for downloading open source components and gets 4 billion requests per year.

Microsoft, Nokia will spend $24 million on university program to boost app development
Microsoft and Nokia will invest up to €18 million ($24 million) in a new mobile application development program at Finland's Aalto University during the next three years, with the goal of helping create applications for Windows Phone, the two companies said on Monday. The program is called AppCampus and will kick off in May, at which time interested entrepreneurs can start applying for grants.

Facebook scammers host Trojan horse extensions on the Chrome Web Store
Cybercriminals are uploading malicious Chrome browser extensions to the official Chrome Web Store and use them to hijack Facebook accounts, according to security researchers from Kaspersky Lab. The rogue extensions are advertised on Facebook by scammers and claim to allow changing the color of profile pages, tracking profile visitors or even removing social media viruses, said Kaspersky Lab expert Fabio Assolini in a blog post on Friday.
