Everything seemed perfectly normal as we hit the "publish" button and watched our last system guide go up. Not long afterward, we noticed a disturbing trend: hard-drive prices were climbing, and climbing... and climbing . Drives that were once on ...Read more...

$100 Android 4.0 tablet has MIPS processor
If you thought Amazon had a monopoly on uber-cheap Android tablets with the $199 Kindle Fire, think again. MIPS has announced that a 7" tablet powered by its processor architecture is retailing in China for less than $100—that's $100 without a carrier subsidy—and will soon be making its way to the U.S.
The tablet is known in China as the Ainovo novo7 . It runs Android 4.0, the latest release from Google, and features an Ingenic JZ4770 system-on-a-chip, 802.11n Wi-Fi connectivity, USB 2.0, ...

Stylized puzzle platformer Pid due next year
If there's one thing I'm a sucker for, it's artsy-lookin' indie puzzle platformers. From Braid and Limbo to Saira and Trine, they're almost always unique, daring, and a ton of fun to play. It looks like we're now due for another one. As Joystiq reports, Swedish studio Might And Delight has announced Pid, a delightfully stylized platformer due out on the PC and consoles next year.

Ruggedized ThinkPad X130e makes bid for classrooms
Lenovo is looking to indoctrinate a new generation of PC users with its ThinkPad X130e ultraportable. The system is designed explicitly for elementary and high-school students, and it's been ruggedized to endure the abuse they can dish out. In addition to a rubber bumper that lines the top cover, stronger corners and a thicker screen bezel promise to protect the system from violent impacts. The expansion ports have been recessed and reinforced, and the screen's hinge has been beefed up and tested to endure 30,000 cycles.
All that bombproofing comes at a price, of course. The X130e weighs in at nearly four pounds, which seems a little hefty for an 11.6" system designed for children. ...

Ivy Bridge mobile CPU specifications exposed
More details have leaked out on Intel's upcoming Ivy Bridge CPUs. We learned about the desktop side of Sandy Bridge's successor last week, and now the mobile part of the picture has been filled in. CPU World has summarized the specifications of no fewer than eight notebook-bound Ivy Bridge CPUs.
The first quad-core members of the mobile Ivy Bridge family will reportedly arrive in April. Three models will supposedly be available at that time, including a Core i7-3920XM with a 3.8GHz Turbo peak and a 55W ...

128Gb, 20-nm flash chips to sample soon at IMFT
Intel and Micron have hit a couple of new milestones that should pave the way for cheaper, higher-capacity solid-state drives later this year. The two companies, which collaborate through their joint venture IMFT, say they've kicked off mass production of 64Gb (8GB) 20-nm NAND flash chips. They also claim to have developed the "the world's first 20 nanometer (nm), 128 gigabit (Gb), multilevel-cell (MLC) device." Here's the skinny, straight from this morning's announcement:

2GB Battlefield 3 PC update rolling out today
If, like me, you've sunk far too many hours into Battlefield 3's multiplayer, you'll be happy to know that a huge update full of bug fixes and balance tweaks is due out today. In fact, it's probably out already. DICE's Mikael Kalms posted on the official forums on Friday to say the update roll-out would begin at 8AM GMT on December 6.
The update includes both server-side and client-side components, with the latter weighing in at an elephantine 2GB. Kalms attributes the client update's huge footprint to its inclusion of ...
