AMD corrects muffed Bulldozer transistor count
In our review of AMD's "Bulldozer" desktop processors, we relayed a bit of information from AMD that wasn't quite right. The company initially told us, along with virtually everyone else in the press, that Bulldozer/Zambezi chips were made up of two billion transistors. That is a very big number, and honestly, it took us some time to process. I'll even admit to spending the better part of a day talking to people about how extensively AMD used logic synthesis in Bulldozer, trying to figure out where all of those transistors came from.
Turns out the answer to our question was relatively simple: the transistor count number AMD supplied to the press was incorrect, as an article at AnandTech pointed out today. After reading that, we spoke with AMD PR rep Phil Hughes, ...

WD resumes production at one Thailand facility
Although the Thailand flooding continues to wreak havoc on hard drive prices, progress is being made at Western Digital's facilities in the country. One building in the company's Bang Pa-in factory, which had been under six feet of water until the middle of November, resumed production earlier this week. It's unclear what that particular building produces, but WD has indicated the production of head sliders won't resume at the facility until March. The equipment needed to produce head sliders was submerged and needs to be decontaminated and refurbished.
Around the time slider production resumes in Bang Pa-in, Western Digital expects to be cranking out the same parts at a new facility in Malaysia. ...

Skyrim developer tools due out in January
User-created mods used to be a staple of the PC gaming industry. They're not as popular these days, probably because the tools required to create them aren't readily available for a lot of titles. Skyrim is different, though. There are already numerous mods out for the game, and Bethesda is set to unleash a full suite of developer tools in the new year.
Rock, Paper, Shotgun has been told that this so-called creation kit will be made up of the very same tools used by Bethesda to create the game. To get folks started, the creation kit will ...

Windows 8 on ARM may not support desktop apps
The ARM incarnation of Windows 8 is sounding more and more like a raw deal. Remember back in September, when Microsoft said the ARM build won't run legacy x86 apps and the firm will "focus on Metro apps as the opportunity" for cross-compatibility between ARM and x86? Well, rumor now has it the ARM version of Windows 8 may not support non-Metro apps, period.
Paul Thurrott of SuperSite For Windows dropped the bombshell ...

Web stats firm: Chrome overtook Firefox in November
Firefox may not be the world's second-most-popular web browser anymore. According to data released by StatCounter, Google Chrome overtook Firefox for the first time ever in November, squeezing ahead with a slim, 0.46-point lead.
Those are global numbers. In the United States alone, StatCounter says Firefox is holding on to its second-place spot, with a ...

Catalyst 11.11c preview driver released
Well, would you look at that. AMD has released yet another Catalyst driver update—its fourth in the past couple of weeks. After the 11.11, 11.11a, and 11.11b releases, please give a warm welcome to the 11.11c Performance Driver. Cue thunderous applause.
This might come as a shock, but today's release is merely an incremental update over the previous drivers. All it adds is, in AMD's words, "CrossfireX performance scaling for the AMD Radeon HD ...

Syndicate trailer has guns, lots of guns
Starbreeze Studios' first-person take on the Syndicate universe is due out early next year. Despite trampling on the original's isometric perspective, the new game has looked promising in early trailers. The latest one tackles the arsenal, and it looks like players will have no shortage of weapons to dispense with their enemies.

Report: Ultrabook price cuts coming soon
Ultrabook prices are expected to drop substantially when second-generation designs arrive featuring Intel's upcoming Ivy Bridge CPU. Ivy's not expected until the spring, but it looks like the current crop of ultrabooks could get some relief before then. DigiTimes' sources claim Asus, Acer, and Toshiba will lower prices on their ultrabooks before the end of the year. Prices will drop again in the first quarter of next year thanks to a $100 marketing subsidy from Intel, the sources say.
Coincidentally, we've already heard rumors Apple is readying a round of price cuts for the MacBook Air—the original ultrabook. Those cuts are reportedly coming before the Air lineup is refreshed with Ivy Bridge CPUs, so I'd expect ...

Acer confirms Tegra 3 tablet plans
Ah, if only all companies were so quick to confirm rumors. Earlier this week, word started going around that Acer had a tablet based on Android 4.0 and Nvidia's Tegra 3 processor in the works. T3 now says it has received confirmation of the rumor's veracity from none other than Acer President Jim Wong.
Wong reportedly told the gadget site, "You may have seen some leaked stories in the media relating to Acer launching a new quad-core tablet and I can confirm these stories are true." T3 says the device will indeed have Tegra 3 inside and will debut ...
