No Hiding From Darpa's 'Social Interaction' Sensors
If you were to rate this on a weirdo-matic scale of 1 - 10, what score would you give Darpa's latest experiment?
A new Pentagon experiment called "Assessment of Asymmetric Social Indicators" is setting out to build a sensor that picks up on the group dynamics of military units. The technology would be used for "measuring, and assessing social interactions in military contexts," creating analytical snapshots of groups in "training, medical and mental health settings, [and] security."

Gigabyte GeForce GTX580 Super OverClock
Those of you in the market for a new NVIDIA based video card should check out the review of the Gigabyte Geforce GTX580 Super OverClock posted at FunkyKit today.
When I first laid eyes on the Gigabyte GTX580 Super OverClock I was impressed. Now that I have actually tested it out I am even more impressed. The cooler is fantastic, the performance is excellent, there really aren't any down sides to speak of, unless you count the current retail price of $520 or so. On one hand that's a lot of money, but on the other hand you're getting the fastest single core card on the planet. That's hard to argue with!

Judge's Sloppy PDF Skills Leaked Apple Secrets
Damn, the judge only leaked a few minor secrets? Too bad she didn't leak some iPhone 5 info...it would be interesting to see if Apple had the balls to pose as cops and search her house.
It's not as if Koh leaked the design of the iPad 3 or anything, though. Reuters flagged two fairly mundane revelations: 1) "Apple's own studies show that existing customers are unlikely to switch from iPhones to Samsung devices" and 2) "The redacted portions also refer to licensing deals that Apple struck with other high-tech companies over one of its key patents. Issued in December 2008."

Avoid Sites Selling Counterfeit Items
How do you avoid sites selling counterfeit crap? It's easy, I only shop with reputable companies like all the ones listed on our commissioned buying links list (here). Problem solved.
A study by brand-protection company MarkMonitor estimates that businesses will lose $135 billion in 2011 due to fake merchandise sold online, as Katie Deatsch reported last January on the Internet Retailer site. I was unable to find the original report quoting that figure on the MarkMonitor site.

Shocker: MPAA Writes U.S. Anti-Piracy Bill?
Honestly, does it really matter if the MPAA / RIAA are behind this bill? The sheer amount of money those groups spend lobbying the government, they might as well be signing the bills themselves.
MPAA exec Michael O'Leary said in an afternoon press call that the agency "will come forward with language that will address some of the legitimate concerns," of those opposed to the bill, including Google, Facebook, Yahoo, Zynga and myriad other Web companies and advocacy groups.

Should Homeland Security Control the Electrical Grid?
You know, I think I'm going to go with my gut on this one and say "HELL NO!"
The electrical grid is commonly cited as a potential security issue for the U.S. And in a wide-ranging study on the matter, researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology say that the time has come for the U.S. government to focus a single agency's efforts on doing a better job of securing it.
