Microsoft undercuts VMware on private cloud pricing
Microsoft has always positioned Hyper-V to be a less expensive alternative to VMware. Now the software giant says that with VMware's new VRAM-based pricing, it calculates a private cloud built on Microsoft can cost up to $70,000 less than one built under VMware's licensing schemes.

Salesforce.com, Dun & Bradstreet launch Data.com
Salesforce.com is joining forces with Dun & Bradstreet on Data.com, a cloud-based storehouse of company and customer contact information for use in CRM (customer relationship management) systems, the companies said Wednesday. Data.com builds on Salesforce.com's earlier acquisition of contact provider Jigsaw in 2009. Jigsaw uses a crowd-sourcing model to collect up-to-date information, with users of the service contributing data and helping keep records clean of errors.

Openwave says Apple, RIM violate patents
Mobile software vendor Openwave Systems filed a complaint against Apple and RIM (Research In Motion) at the U.S. ITC (International Trade Commission) on Wednesday, saying the companies violated its patents and asking the agency to block importation of their products.

Apache patches Web server DoS vulnerability
The Apache open-source project patched its Web server software Tuesday to quash a bug that a denial-of-service (DoS) tool has been exploiting. Apache 2.2.20, released Tuesday, plugs the hole used by "Apache Killer," an attack tool that hackers have been using for more than a week to cripple Web servers.

DOJ to block AT&T's acquisition of T-Mobile USA
The U.S. Department of Justice has filed a lawsuit to block AT&T from acquiring mobile competitor T-Mobile USA, with the agency saying the $39 billion deal would significantly reduce competition, jack up prices, and stifle innovation. The DOJ lawsuit, filed Wednesday in U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, points to T-Mobile USA's role as a low-cost competitor to the three other nationwide mobile carriers as a reason to block the deal.

AT&T to return jobs to U.S. if T-Mobile deal is approved
AT&T will return 5,000 outsourced call-center jobs to the U.S. if regulators approve its proposed $39 billion acquisition of T-Mobile USA, the company said Wednesday. AT&T, awaiting a decision by the U.S. Federal Communications Commission and the U.S. Department of Justice, also promised that the merger will not cause job losses at U.S. call centers for both companies. AT&T has not yet determined what countries the 5,000 jobs will come from, the company said in a press release.

Secunia's patching tool integrated with Microsoft's WSUS
Secunia, a Danish security company that makes two tools that ensure applications have up-to-date patches, released a product on Wednesday that can deploy non-Microsoft patches using that company's widely used patching tool. The feature is contained in Secunia's Corporate Software Inspector (CSI) 5.0, a paid product for enterprises. CSI 5.0 can now package third-party patches -- such as those from Adobe Apple and other vendors -- and publish those updates to Microsoft's Windows Server Update Services (WSUS).

Companies that have as many as 400 servers, including machines running internally as well as in public clouds, can start using a hosted management tool from ScaleXtreme, starting Tuesday. ScaleXtreme has been offering a limited version of its hosted cloud systems management service but on Tuesday is launching the full commercial product, including a free version as well as a premium service.
