DisplayPort 1.2 brings active cable support, longer cords and a new logo
VESA have popped their heads up quickly to announce an update to the DisplayPort 1.2 standard. The updates include video connections that can be stretched up to 100 feet - five times that of what is out now and will use thinner gauge wire for more flexible cords. The one backlash is the cables are directional, but the new logo should help the confusion over which end goes where.

DisplayPort 1.2 brings active cable support, longer cords and a new logo
For those of you with DisplayPort hardware, and for those who over time will end up going DisplayPort, this is good news. Longer cables mean more options!

AC Ryan PlayOn!HD2 Media Player Review
AC Ryan PlayOn!HD2 Media Player Review

Today I'm going to talk about AC Ryan's PlayOn!HD2 media player. Just recently I took a look at KWorld's media player and this follows suit. One of the negative impressions I had with the KWorld player, however, was the UI. AC Ryan has not made the same mistake, believe me.

AC Ryan's PlayOn!HD2 media player has an absolutely gorgeous user interface - I fell in love with it the second it booted up. No low resolution, low quality, quickly-put-together UI; it was a polished, well thought-out, high-resolution UI. Tick!

The UI is a beautiful blue color and features a "wave" at the bottom where you have logos for PlayOn! as well as website links for playonhd.com and playondvr.com. This I didn't mind as the UI looks so good you just get used to it - it feels very "web 2.0" of them.

AC Ryan PlayOn!HD2 Media Player Review
Another tick is the style of the unit itself and the remote control. The unit is a beautiful black, but boy is it big. Standing next to my trusty Popcorn Hour, it is easily twice as high, but not as wide. The HD2 features USB 3.0 which is a great addition, for which it has 2 x USB 3.0 ports on the side of the unit.

Remote wise, the first thing I noticed is just how light it is - I have (excuse the following exaggeration) a 4.5 tonne Samsung remote for my TV (there's just no need) and my amplifier remote is not too bad; but compared to them both, the PlayOn!HD2 remote feels like air. The more I get into this player, the more I'm enjoying it.

I enjoyed the plethora of connections at the back with the bad boy :-

AC Ryan PlayOn!HD2 Media Player Review
As you can see in the above image, the PlayOn!HD2 really gives its all. It doesn't hold back, especially with the inclusion of Gigabit Ethernet and USB 3.0 support. Two more ticks!

Does it stack up against other media players in general use? This is a yes and no. Everything else blew me away and I think I got over-confident in the abilities of this unit. I was streaming both 720p and 1080p MKV-based content from my NAS and on the Popcorn Hour and KWorld players - this was seamless.

On the PlayOn!HD2, it was at times, a mess. First up, navigating to the file is ok, but issues with the interface pop up. Let's say you have a folder with a TV series - 24 episodes in a folder, scrolling from the first file to the final file would result in a user holding the "down" button on the remote and scrolling through the eps, from 1 - 10 on the first screen. Once you reach the 10th episode it would refresh the page and start from say 11 to 20.

No - Not on the PlayOn!HD2. Once you've held the button down and reached the bottom of the page, it will refresh the entire page and start skipping in lots of 10. This means if you had a folder of movies, it would skip from 1, 2, 3 etc to 10, then 10, 20, 30 - which results in frustration as you have to let go of the down button as you get to the last file (9 or 10) or else it skips pretty far ahead. This is my first cross - unfortunately there's more than one.

Secondly, if you're in a habit of watching a bunch of episodes at once like I do, you might watch a few one night and leave it until the next day to finish it off.

Turn the player off and you come back to it with the player remembering where you were on the network/file list and you just select the ep and go.

Not with the PlayOn!HD2; it forgets your last location and requires you to reselect where you were, the folder, and navigate through the folder tree every time the player is turned off then on.

Onto performance; the PlayOn!HD2 was impressive bar one thing. The impressive part? It played everything as it should and looked great whilst doing so. The in-movie UI is beautiful and it helps create the whole "home cinema" feel. The remote is great because of its weight and the buttons are well placed so you don't press the wrong one.

Another benefit of the remote control is you can hold down the right (or left) button, let it skip by gradual bits and once you've hit the spot you want to play, instead of the media player just dunking you into that part of the file, you need to press the enter button to confirm you want that skip to be done - little things like this are very impressive.

The little issue? When I go to play back a 720 or 1080p file, it flicks the TV into a different resolution, back to normal, back out to a different resolution, then back into the 720 or 1080p resolution and continues to play - this takes around 7 - 8 seconds and has not happened to me on any other player. I do have the Mini version of the PlayOn!HD2 to test; I will definitely be seeing if the trend continues with that player.

AC Ryan PlayOn!HD2 Media Player Review
As soon as the PlayOn!HD2 is powered up, you can hear the included fan spin up and compared to fanless media players, this is a shock. When browsing menus and selecting files to play, it is quite noticeable. Of course, when media is actually playing, the sound of the fan is drowned out.

These problems may seem insignificant, but remember, I only watch my media through a network media player, so these issues are huge. They are issues in which someone can make a decision between something with little annoyances, but a great, fresh UI and innovative features like GbE and USB 3.0.

But you know what? They're my only gripes with the PlayOn!HD2.

Streaming 720p and 1080p content was nothing but bliss. I would go as far as saying the IQ is slightly better on the PlayOn!HD2 also, with 1080p-based content really shining on this player. The gorgeous UI definitely helps also.

PlayOn!HD2 also features more interaction with friends through Facebook, Twitter, MSN and Skype. These features work just like you'd think they would - except plugging in a USB keyboard is much easier.

Stunning Ultra-Portable U36 Notebook Launches in the UK
The nanometer-coated ASUS U36 is the world's thinnest notebook with standard voltage Intel Core i5 processor. The U36 notebook is the world's thinnest laptop to harness the power of a standard voltage Intel Core i5 processor, giving you the freedom to stay light and connected on the move without compromising on mobile performance.

Stunning Ultra-Portable U36 Notebook Launches in the UK
With an ultra-thin chassis (only 19mm thick) made from lightweight magnesium alloy with nanometer coating, the U36 is not only practical by repelling dirt, water and fingerprint marks, but is a head-turning accessory for even the most fashion-conscious users, both at home and on the go.

The U36 is priced at £699 inc VAT and is available now in-store and online from Micro Anvika (www.anvika.com/product/asus-u36jc-rx197x-13-3-w7p-4gb-500gb/asu14503) and before the end of June from Comet http://www.comet.co.uk

Key Features:

- Standard voltage Intel Core i5 processor
- Ultra-thin chassis only 19mm thick and weighing 1.44kg
- Up to 11.5 hours battery life
- ASUS Super Hybrid Engine with USB 3.0 toggle
- NVIDIA Graphics with Optimus technology

- 13.3" HD TFT display (1366 x 768)
- 500GB storage
- 802.11 b/g/n wireless
- 5 in 1 card reader

Enjoy maximum power without the burden:
Unlike other ultra-thin notebooks (which use low voltage CPUs to gain cooling and power consumption benefits) the U36 has broken the mould in design innovation by unleashing the superior performance of a standard voltage Intel Core i5 processor from within a delightfully sleek 19mm chassis.

This bold step forward is owed to ASUS's dual heat pipe design, which effectively dissipates heat from the processor without adding any extra bulk - keeping the notebook cool and your bag even lighter.

Up to 11.5 hours battery life for all-day computing:

The U36 notebook integrates ASUS's Super Hybrid Engine technology which intelligently manages energy consumption based on whether you're simply checking emails and browsing the net, or using more power-hungry applications such as video editing or playing games.

The NVIDIA graphics card ensures movies and games are blasted out in crystal clear quality for a smooth, uninterrupted experience, whilst Optimus technology cleverly switches between onboard or discrete graphics without any user intervention, so it won't waste power where it's not needed.

With up to 10 hours battery life* as standard, the U36 also offers the ability to switch off USB 3.0 functionality in order to squeeze an extra 1.5 hours on top for a whopping overall 11.5 hours* battery life and the reassurance that you won't be left in the dark away from home.

Stay on trend with the sleek and soft magnesium alloy finish:

The U36's slender chassis is just 19mm at the thickest point, and is designed using ultra-light magnesium alloy for a truly chic finish that is incredibly lightweight (1.44kg).

What's more, with a soft-touch nanometer coating the U36 is repellent of dirt, fingerprints and even water (no more panic when it starts to drizzle), whilst the seamless chiclet keyboard is easier to clean and prevents the build-up of dust. This thoughtful design helps to keep the laptop looking beautiful even after hours of exposure to every kind of environment from the home to trains or when stowed in hand luggage.

With metallic choices in silver or black, the U36 is bang on-trend this season and the ideal choice for a tech chic style both at home and away.

Pricing and Availability:

The U36 is priced at £699 inc VAT and is available now in-store and online from Micro Anvika and before the end of June from Comet http://www.comet.co.uk

Apacer debuts the fifth-gen Industrial CF card
The just-launched fifth-generation industrial CF card features write-protection. By simply locking the lock switch on the bottom side of the card, the industrial CF card allows data to be read only, thus preventing any attempt to write. This way, the data not only can stay safe by avoiding accidental deletion but also can prevent tampering of confidential information that may result in data leakage. These advantages make the card ideal for embedded devices in such fields as medical, military, gaming and automotive applications.

The industrial CF5 card is compliant with the CFA 4.1 specifications. Apacer adopts the standard 50-pin connector and SLC chip featuring industry-level stability for the card. It also boasts resistance to extended temperatures (-40¡ãC to 85¡ãC), and is available in capacities from 128MB to 16GB. The data transfer mode is up to PIO-6, Multi-Word DMA-4 and Ultra DMA-5, with the sequential read/write speed reaching as fast as 40/30 MB/sec. To help data stay correct, this CFC5 memory card also supports 24-bit ECC function, wear-leveling function and S.M.A.R.T. (Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology), thereby substantially enhancing product reliability.

Apacer demonstrates its dedication to highest quality again by offering the new fifth-generation CF card that has passed stern reliability tests for extended temperature, humidity, shock and vibration. Furthermore, the ORT (on-going reliability testing) is performed as well after the mass production to ensure stability. Currently this new CFC 5 industrial memory card has entered mass production. AMD Will Not Endorse SYSmark 2012 Benchmark
AMD Separates from Association with Industry Group BAPCo

AMD Will Not Endorse SYSmark 2012 Benchmark
SUNNYVALE, Calif. -6/21/2011

AMD (NYSE: AMD) today announced that it will not endorse the SYSmark 2012 Benchmark (SM2012), which is published by BAPCo (Business Applications Performance Corporation). Along with the withdrawal of support, AMD has resigned from the BAPCo organization.

"Technology is evolving at an incredible pace, and customers need clear and reliable measurements to understand the expected performance and value of their systems," said Nigel Dessau, senior vice president and Chief Marketing Officer at AMD. "AMD does not believe SM2012 achieves this objective. Hence AMD cannot endorse or support SM2012 or remain part of the BAPCo consortium."

AMD will only endorse benchmarks based on real-world computing models and software applications, and which provide useful and relevant information. AMD believes benchmarks should be constructed to provide unbiased results and be transparent to customers making decisions based on those results. Currently, AMD is evaluating other benchmarking alternatives, including encouraging the creation of an industry consortium to establish an open benchmark to measure overall system performance.

AMD encourages anyone wanting more details about the construction and scoring methodology of the SM2012 benchmark to contact BAPCo. For more details on AMD's decision to exit BAPCo, please read AMD's Executive Blog authored by Nigel Dessau.

Lian Li Announces the PC-A05FN ATX Mid-Tower PC Case
Lian Li Industrial Co. Ltd, maker of high-end, all-aluminum computer chassis since 1983, today releases an all-aluminum, high-end, mid-tower PC case available in silver or black called the PC-A05FN. With their commitment to optimizing instead of merely following convention, Lian Li's designers have positioned the PSU mount behind the front-panel at the base of the case, directly below the HDD cage. This unique design characteristic is complimented by a reversal of Lian Li's traditional front-to-back cooling scheme in order to achieve an increase in heat-dissipation within the PC-A05FN while reducing chassis size. With its chic and clean design, this computer case proudly bears all the markings of Lian Li's high-quality products and fits nicely into their list of outstanding 2011 releases.

Thermal Excellence
In most of Lian Li's PC chassis front-panel fans are for intake and back-panel fans are for exhaust, but in the PC-A05FN this is reversed. At the top of the back-panel, a 120mm intake fan pulls cool air into the chassis. Hot air is expelled with the help of a front-panel, 120mm exhaust fan positioned directly in front of the HDD cage with the air escaping through venting along the side edges of the front-panel. For users who want to increase airflow, Lian Li has included a 140mm top-panel fan mount (fan not included). Additionally, designers have included a vent directly beneath the PSU mount, protected by a washable air-filter. Two rubber-lined holes on the back-panel enable LCS and venting along the back-panel also helps to keep temperatures cool, even when components have been overclocked. Also included is a fan speed control-switch mount (switch not included).

Tool-less and Anti-vibration Features
Internally, three 3.5" and two 2.5" HDDs mount using thumb-screws with rubber-suspension. Two 5.25" ODDs mount with Lian Li's tool-less design at the top of the front-panel. Directly beneath them, an external 3.5" HDD mount has been included as well. Additionally, there are eight, tool-less PCI brackets on the back-panel that can mount VGA cards as long as 280mm. Lian Li has made the PC-A05FN compatible with ATX, Micro-ATX, and Mini-ITX motherboards. The power switch is located along the right edge of the front-panel right above one USB 3.0 port, one USB 2.0 port, and HD Audio ports.

The all-aluminum, PC-A05FN weighs in at 4.4kg. Its dimensions are 210mm x 385mm x 500mm (W, H, D). This exceptionally designed computer chassis is sure to be a hit with users who like to be on the front lines of innovation without sacrificing quality or style.
