Core i7-980 Released at US $583
As reported last week, Intel released its new Core i7-980 six-core processor to the retail channel. The new chip is priced at US $583 in 1000-unit tray quantities, displacing the Core i7-970 from this exact price point it previously held. It is expected that the i7-970 could eventually become cheaper while the platform is still in the market. The Core i7-980 is a socket LGA1366 six-core processor based on the 32 nm "Westmere" silicon. It is clocked at 3.33 GHz, with Turbo Boost speeds of up to 3.60 GHz. Unlike the Core i7-980X Extreme Edition, this chip has an upwards locked BClk multiplier, and its QPI link runs at 4.80 GT/s instead of 6.40 GT/s on the 980X Extreme Edition. As a trade off, the new chip is a little over half the price of the 980X Extreme Edition, which retailed for around US $999.

(PR) AMD Will Not Endorse SYSmark 2012 Benchmark, Separates from Association with BAPCo
AMD today announced that it will not endorse the SYSmark 2012 Benchmark (SM2012), which is published by BAPCo (Business Applications Performance Corporation). Along with the withdrawal of support, AMD has resigned from the BAPCo organization.
"Technology is evolving at an incredible pace, and customers need clear and reliable measurements to understand the expected performance and value of their systems," said Nigel Dessau, senior vice president and Chief Marketing Officer at AMD. "AMD does not believe SM2012 achieves this objective. Hence AMD cannot endorse or support SM2012 or remain part of the BAPCo consortium."

Prolimatech Intros Megahalems Black Series CPU Heatsink
Prolimatech released a new variant of its iconic Megahalems CPU heatsink, called the Black Series Megahalems. With the same exact dimensions as the original at 130 x 158.7 x 74 mm (LxWxH), the new variant uses black colored aluminum fins. The coating doesn't make for a polished, glossy surface, but a grainy one, which increases surface area. The design remains the same: six nickel-plated copper heat pipes pass through a base, conveying heat to two aluminum fin stacks that are arranged along each arm of the U-shape the heat pipes make. The Black Series Megahalems is compatible with all the current CPU socket types, including AMD AM3+, AM3, AM2+, AM2; Intel LGA1155, LGA1156, LGA1366, and LGA775. Gigabyte Intros Rev. 2.0 of its GeForce GTX 560 Ti SuperOverclock Graphics Card
Gigabyte released a new revision of its GeForce GTX 560 Ti SuperOverclock graphics card. The new revision features a better (quieter) cooler, it retains the clock speeds of the original GTX 560 Ti SOC. The new cooler uses a similar, if not identical heatsink as the one in the original's cooler, with a dense aluminum fin array to which heat is conveyed by copper heat pipes. Unlike the original, the new cooler uses bigger inclined fans that deliver the same air flow at lower speeds, ending up being quieter.
That aside, the Gigabyte GTX 560 Ti SuperOverclock features clock speeds of 950 MHz core, 1900 MHz CUDA cores, and 1002 MHz (4008 MHz effective) GDDR5 memory. There is 1 GB of memory spread over a 256-bit wide memory interface, churning out roughly 128 GB/s of memory bandwidth. Gigabyte's in-house PCB uses Ultra Durable VGA+ construction, with 2 oz copper layer board, power-conditioning NEC Tokin Proadlizer, hand-picked GPU and memory chips, Japanese solid-state capacitors, ferrite core choke, and low RDS (on) MOSFETs. The card takes power from two 6-pin power connectors, display outputs include two DVI and one mini-HDMI. Expect the new revision to carry a similar price tag as the original, around US $260.
