NVIDIA 3D Vision now works with YouTube 3D videos, Firefox FTW
Stereoscopic 3D is slowly making it's way everywhere, the limits of this are not known as now it has made its way to your browser and more specifically, YouTube. NVIDIA, Mozilla and Google have all combined their powers (minus Captain Planet) and have made stereoscopic 3D videos on YouTube to work with systems that are NVIDIA 3D Vision-powered. The feature is supported through a new HTML5-based 3D playback mode that works in Firefox 4.

NVIDIA 3D Vision now works with YouTube 3D videos, Firefox FTW
Mozilla products VP Jay Sullivan said in a statement:

Firefox with 3D Vision creates a stunning and smooth 3D video experience using HTML5 video based on open standards. 3D Vision from NVIDIA is a great example of the rich, innovative experiences that are being built on top of the speed and graphics power that Firefox delivers to the Web.
Sure, right now the audience is small, but every little bit counts, right? What gets me, is Google are partnered in this (because of YouTube), which is surprising as they left out their own growing browser, Chrome.

Facebook music service to be launched, partnered with Spotify
Facebook is rumored to start holding hands with Spotify on a music-streaming service that could be launched within a fortnight. It is currently going through testing and when launched, Facebook users will see a Spotify icon appear on the left of their newsfeed, along with the usual icons for photos, events and CityVille.

Facebook music service to be launched, partnered with Spotify
Once that icon appears, clicking on it will install the service on their desktop in the background and will allow users to play from Spotify's library of millions of songs through Facebook. The service goes one step further since it's on a social networking site, by letting Facebook users listen to music simultaneously with their friends over Facebook.

The new service might be called "Facebook Music" or "Spotify on Facebook", but unfortunately, it will only be available to Facebook users who are in countries where Spotify has a presence - surprisingly, this excludes the United States.

Since this will crush your souls to read this news about it not being released in the states, I'll leave the rest of this in the source for you to read.

RumorTT: Windows tablet OS to be previewed next week?
This is just a rumor for now, but the rumor is so juicy that I had to post it. It is rumored that Microsoft will preview its Windows operating system designed for tablet-based systems in demonstrations planned for next week. Microsoft is reportedly rushing to adapt Windows to better support devices that can compete with Apple's iPad which currently dominates the tablet market.

RumorTT: Windows tablet OS to be previewed next week?
The new tablet-based OS from Microsoft isn't expected until next year, people familiar with the plans had said and more specifically, March of next year. Microsoft is rumored to be showcasing the software's touch-screen interface running on NVIDIA-based Tegra hardware. Right now, this sits in the "ooh, can't wait to see it pile", and as soon as there are some hard facts, pictures or videos, we shall wait patiently.

Google unveils Wallet, super-secure NFC tech made useful
Google's Wallet has finally been unveiled, with Google saying "Your phone will be your wallet". This is what Google Wallet and Google offers will be capable of, by combining payments and deals into one package. It's the future of paying for things, really. Google Wallet is not a single thing, it's a cake mix of multiple products rolled into a single thing. It's an Android app, it's a way of paying for things with credit or debit cards by using your phone.

Google unveils Wallet, super-secure NFC tech made useful
It's a coupon collector and loyalty card system, it's another way for merchants to let you pay and offer up deals. It has tentacles into other Google services such as Shopper and Google Offers. The core technology uses wireless NFC and more specifically, MasterCards's PayPass system, so you'll be able to use it anywhere that offers PayPass.

At the moment, Citi's the sole banking partner with Sprint as the carrier partner. At the moment, you're limited to a single phone and credit card for the full Google Wallet experience. Only a Nexus S 4G and Citi MasterCard will give you the "full" experience, although you can fill up the Google pre-paid card that comes with every wallet using any credit or debit card. Google are saying that GoogleWallet is "more secure than your wallet", well I don't know about that, my wallet gets my ass-time than my chair.

The reasoning behind this is that Wallet never displays your full credit card details, it requires a PIN to access and the data is encrypted. If you lose it, the cards can be de-provisioned over-the-air which is quite the feature. There's a fair amount of security built into the phone's NFC chip (which stores and transmits the credit card info). Such as, the NFC antenna is turned off when the screen is off - this means it's completely secure in your pocket again "laser-attacks" (pew pew).

More info at the source, just watch out for those pew-pew lasers.

Sony Confirms Next-Gen Console
Not hugely exciting because we have no information whatsoever beyond what the headline reads, but good to know that Sony's got its eye on the prize. I'm hoping they'll have some sort of touchscreen-format-meets-kinect-like-interface.... so basically, Minority Report in a game console.

Sony Confirms Next-Gen Console
Executive vice president and chief financial officer Masaru Kato reportedly explained to shareholders today:

In the game segment, we have the NGP to launch later this year. So we have development expenses to be incurred for this product. For the home console, the PS3 still has a product life, but this is a platform business, so for the future platform - when we will introduce the product I cannot discuss - but development work is underway, so the costs are incurred there.
Since Nintendo has already confirmed that they'll be announcing "Project Cafe" at E3, I wouldn't be surprised if Sony throws us some more info at E3.

Street Fighter IV and Vega Featured In Rap Video
Remember yesterday when we posted that awesome YouTube video of that dude Police Academy'ing an old school Street Fighter SNES match? Well musician JJ (Double J) has put together a pretty catch rap song about being Sagat with Vega in Street Fighter IV.

He even works in the button combinations into the song: "Charge Back Forward Punch / Hit him with the claw". The video is complete with Double J's gameplay, and to tell the truth - dude rocks with Vega. I'm not entirely sure what he has against Sagat, but he's sure happy about beating him all the time.

Imaginary Phone Concept Takes The Screen Out Of Touchscreen
As confusing as that headline may sound, it's not a joke: Researchers Sean Gustafson, Christian Holz and Patrick Baudisch of the Hasso-Plattner Institute have created a working prototype of a touch interface that literally
you can hold in
is the palm of your hand.

A wearable depth camera tracks the user's movements on the surface of the palm of his or hand, corresponding to specific commands for an iPhone or other touchscreen phone, such as sliding to unlock and time settings. I just recently returned from the Augmented Reality Event in Santa Clara, of which author Vernor Vinge was one of the keynote speakers. His 2006 novel, Rainbows End, is one of the key ideological foundations of the AR industry, and in that book he features characters that can manipulate electronics and the internet by a set of clothes he describes as "wearables".

The future is now, kiddos. Phase 1: Imaginary Interfaces. Phase 2: interacting with the internet by shrugging your shoulders. Anybody else giddy?

Imaginary Phone allows users to control their mobile devices without taking it out of their pocket. Instead, users mimic the interaction on the palm of their hand. The interaction is tracked by a wearable depth camera which sends input events to the actual physical device. By mimicking the layout of the physical device, here an iPhone, users can operate the device based on spatial memory built up while using the physical device.
The shown work is a research project by Sean Gustafson, Christian Holz and Prof. Patrick Baudisch at the Human Computer Interaction Lab at Hasso Plattner Institute, Potsdam, Germany.

Mach Xtreme MX-GX USB 3.0 16GB Thumb Drive Review
Mach Xtreme MX-GX USB 3.0 16GB Thumb Drive Review
It's been awhile since we looked at a thumb drive, but it's time to get back into the thick of things. Over the coming days we'll see three of the latest and greatest USB 3.0 thumb drives that are capable of holding large amounts of data and transferring that data at high speeds. The last drive we looked at was the Mach Xtreme MX-FX; today we are looking at Mach Xtreme's newest offering, the MX-GX.

Mach Xtreme MX-GX USB 3.0 16GB Thumb Drive Review
The Mach Xtreme GX is available in four capacity sizes; 8GB, 16GB, 32GB and 64GB. Each capacity size has a different read / write speed rating even though they all use a quad channel controller. Today we are looking at the 16GB model that is capable of 140MB/s read and 30MB/s write speeds.

After a few minutes of searching, I was able to find the Mach Xtreme MX-GX 16GB online for 49.99 USD at Amazon.com. This price falls in line with other 16GB USB 3.0 drives with similar read / write speeds. Google only reported one hit, though, on our product search, so there aren't too many of them floating around on this side of the pond.

Mach Xtreme MX-GX USB 3.0 16GB Thumb Drive Review
Our initial testing with ATTO gave us a read speed of nearly 100MB/s and a write speed of around 20MB/s. These results were recorded without using Mach Xtreme's add-on software layer that is designed to improve transfer speeds. With the software installed we saw a performance gain, but I'm still not sold on end users installing a software package on each of their systems just for flash drives. Motherboard manufacturers are adding a 'Turbo USB 3" feature in the BIOS that gets around the software layer, but so far we've only achieved limited success.

As you'll see at the top of the next column, in CrystalDiskMark we found that the Mach Xtreme MX-GX performed very well when reading data, but the write performance was around the same speed as a good USB 2.0 flash drive. Depending on how you use the MX-GX, this could be an issue.

Mach Xtreme MX-GX USB 3.0 16GB Thumb Drive Review
If you plan to put a large amount of data on the drive and then use the Mach Xtreme MX-GX to read that data on different computers, then you will be fine; it'll just take longer to put that data on the first time. If you plan on using the MX-GX as temporary storage that is constantly revolving data, then you will have to wait on the write process more often. At just 30MB/s write speed you will be waiting around quite a bit for large files.

If that isn't bad enough, the 4K write speed is only .01MB/s; you will be waiting around for small file transfers as well. Let's take a look at how the synthetic numbers relate to real world performance.

Mach Xtreme MX-GX USB 3.0 16GB Thumb Drive Review
AS SSD Copy Benchmark was used to determine the real world file transfer speed of the thumb drives. Three tests are ran; ISO, Program and Game. The ISO file is a large file, Program is a series of small files and Game is a mix of several large and small files.

The real world file transfer speed of the Mach Xtreme MX-GX isn't that great. Actually....we've tested USB 2.0 drives that were faster.

The MX-GX wasn't without issue either. The software package caused all sorts of trouble when we plugged the drive into a USB 2.0 port and the drive went half crazy when tested with AIDA64 (the latency tests). I wouldn't suggest anyone test this flash drive with AIDA64. You can add AS SSD's standard test as well. Since the 4K write speed is so slow, the test takes forever. We stopped the 4K write test after 18 hours.

Mach Xtreme MX-GX USB 3.0 16GB Thumb Drive Review
No one likes to be a spoil sport, but the Mach Xtreme MX-GX just didn't do it for me. The testing issues turned me off from the drive right at the start, but the real world performance when trying to transfer files was the final straw. The last chance was transferring data off a Lenovo W701ds (with USB 3.0) and the data writes just took forever. I eventually just pulled the HDD and transferred the data over SATA.
