Gigabyte Touch BIOS video, touching your BIOS in places it shouldn't
Gigabyte have today released a video showing off their new Touch BIOS, it's innovative and user-friendly and available on all Gigabyte Z68-based motherboards. The BIOS has not really changed much in the past few, oh I don't know, decades... but there are a few companies with different takes on what they think the BIOS should be (or at least, how it should look and feel). Gigabyte have taken a path that brings familiarity to the concept in the form of an icon-based user experience. Take a look at the below video and see what you think.

The touch navigation obviously has requirements of a touch-enabled monitor plus Windows 7 in order to work. Mouse navigation is supposed with any monitor along with Windows XP/Vista and 7.

Royal Wedding Live Stream breaks records, doesn't include two kisses
The Royal Wedding went off without a hitch yesterday and (sadly) I watched it live. I guess I had to, I have been reporting on it, talking about it and knew it'd break records or have some huge newsworthy stuff about it within seconds of it happening so here we are. Livestream has reported it broke a record for the most concurrent viewers on Livestream.

Royal Wedding Live Stream breaks records, doesn't include two kisses
The livestream of William and Kate (now Catherine?) topped 300, 000 concurrent viewers at 6 am on Friday morning. CEO Max Haot had expected "at least 2 million" unique viewers by the time the broadcast was done. Livestream had various partners for it's coverage; Associated Press, UK Press Association, CBS and Entertainment Tonight.

Akamai has also announced that the wedding broke broader live streaming records also, a representative for Akamai reports that "concurrent live streams of Royal Wedding on Akamai surpassed the 1.6M peak set by World Cup in June of 2010."

The bug report lists components and implementations like a 1.5GHz dual-core Atom N550, SanDisk SSD P4 (size TBA), and 2GB RAM, a Qualcomm Gobi 2000 3G card, Bluetooth, WiFi, webcam, and a Synaptics touchpad. Marvel Announces MMO In The Works: Excelsior!
Due most likely to popularity of MMO's like DC Universe and Marvel's own Superhero Squad Online, Marvel and Gazillion Entertainment are banding together to provide what will most likely be an insanely entertaining MMORPG.

From Gazillion's website:

Marvel Announces MMO In The Works: Excelsior!
Smash frost giants with Thor's® Hammer. Unbalance Ultron by slinging Captain America's® shield. Explore a remote and hostile jungle as Storm.
Leave behind your everyday life and live as a renowned Marvel Super Hero including all of his or her abilities. Become powerful, famous, well-respected, feared by evil-doers, and relied upon by the citizens of a grateful, persistent online world.
Gazillion is already responsible for Marvel Superhero Squad, an online game marketed toward younger gamers and fans of the comic books. Marvel Universe, however, will be more along the lines of traditional, mature online gaming experiences. And unlike its main competition, DC Universe, players will be playing not as custom-created original superheroes, but the Marvel Comics characters themselves. Playable characters already announced include Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, Spiderman, Wolverine and Nova, but according to IGN, the game will launch with more playable Marvel characters than any other game in the history of Marvel video games.

Marvel comics fans will be truly excited to learn that famed writer Brian Michael Bendis will be writing the entirety of the gameplay narrative. Bendis has led the last 2309482 Marvel crossover events, and pretty much guides the continuity and progression of all the popular titles. He also currently teaches at the University of Portland, OR, around which he resides with his family.

Release date is to be announced as well as many other details, but the coolest aspect of this news is that Marvel Universe will be free- no subscription cost, and available to all. BAMF!

MySpace Gets $100 Million For Sale Sign
After recent troubles affecting the social network turned news & entertainment site, MySpace is on NewsCorp's chopping block. Or rather, on a table at a garage sale. According to the Wall Street Journal, NewsCorp expects around $100 Million for the site, which comes to an 84% loss for the network they paid $580 Million to acquire back in 2005.

MySpace Gets $100 Million For Sale Sign
NewsCorp evidently hopes to at least scrap the site for parts, so to speak, as they will be accepting offers for select components of MySpace. Reported parties interested in purchasing MySpace (though God knows why) include THL Partners, Redscout Ventures, Criterion Capital (owner of social network Bebo, Chinese Internet holding company Tencent, and even MySpace co-founder Chris De Wolfe.

Isn't that kinda like a furniture craftsman buying back his own work at an antique auction?

Twitter Exceeds 200 Million Users, Nips At Facebook's Heels
Yesterday at the Guardian Activate conference in New York, Twitter Vice President of International Strategy Katie Stanton confirmed that there are now over 200 Million registered users on Twitter. She commented that over 70% of Twitter traffic comes from outside the US, with around 25% in Japan alone. Also remarkable -but not altogether surprising- is that 40% of Twitter traffic comes from mobile phones.

Twitter Exceeds 200 Million Users, Nips At Facebook's Heels
Stanton noted:

Twitter isn't so much a triumph of technology, it's a triumph of humanity - connecting those stories and connecting those voices.
Stanton also noted that because the founders of Twitter (Evan Williams, Noah Glass, Biz Stone, Jack Dorsey) wanted the service to be accessible even in parts of the world with very weak mobile capability. This makes sense as Twitter was an invaluable resource for news, status updates, and communication during both the Egyptian Revolution and Japanese Earthquake & Pacific Tsunami events of this year.

Given their growth rate, it is quite possible that Twitter will catch up to Facebook within the next two years, especially considering that many people use both for different reasons. It is clear that Twitter is going to hang around for a while- I for one cannot be happier. Brevity is the soul of instantly accessible knowledge- embrace the short form and sign up. You can catch me @traklord or the site itself @tweaktown.

OCZ unveils VeloDrive PCI-Express-based SSD drives for SMB's, Enterprise Clients and System Integrators
Daryl Lang, VIP of Product Management of OCZ Technology Group says:

The VeloDrive is the latest addition to our comprehensive lineup of PCIe SSDs. A truly configurable solution, it helps a range of customers accelerate their application performance. he ability to run the VeloDrive in multiple modes provides clients with the freedom to use the raid stack of their choice. This maximizes performance and creates faster, more seamless deployments with RAID stacks that may already have been qualified for their unique usage model.
The VeloDrive is capable of running in either hardware or software RAID modes and can be deployed in half-height or full-height based systems. OCZ say that when comparing the VeloDrive to other PCIe flash-based solutions, the highly-efficient VeloDrive has a minimal impact on system resources including CPU utilization and the system's DRAM footprint.

Speed wise, this thing seems quite amazing. By eliminating the SATA/SAS bottleneck, the VeloDrive is capable of delivering speeds of up to 1GB/sec and 130, 000 4KM random write IOPS. The VeloDrive is powered by a SandForce SF-1565 SSD processor which is built for enhanced reliability and power loss data protection. The VeloDrive utilizes MLC NAND flash and will be available in 300GB, 600GB and 1.2TB configurations.

When can I have one OCZ?

Death Of Flip Camcorder Leaves Ecosystem In/At Its Wake
San Francisco-based telecommunications giant Cisco recently announced they'd be discontinuing their Flip Minicamcorder line of products, which has left an existential vacuum for a lot of different Flip-based gadgets, including Blue Microphone's Mikey. To commemorate it's untimely demise, Blue Microphone posted an obituary for their beloved product.

Death Of Flip Camcorder Leaves Ecosystem In/At Its Wake
Before its discontinuation, a series of Flip Camcorders with "Flip Ports" had been released, opening up developing opportunities for third party tinkerers. The Mikey have been shortlived, but it is survived by its brother and sisters who attach to the iPod and other Apple devices that, like Flip Mikey, record high quality stereophonic audio so your videos catch all sorts of phonic nuance.

These days, amidst an ever growing economy of gadgets and enterprises, it's always surprising to realize how similarly structured the technological ecosystem is to its living counterpart. Just as if a species were to go extinct, the disappearance of Flip leaves a slew of accessories, attachables, cases, protectors, carrying bags, etc. that will meet as tragic passings as the Mikey.

Super Mario Bros. Much Easier With Portal Gun
Shocker.

This great re-imagining of the iconic Nintendo Entertainment System shows just how darn useful a Portal gun can be- in pretty much any situation.

I think it's pretty evident that the addition of a Portal gun into any experience that, you know, didn't revolve around creating portals would be a literal game-changer. But it's fun to imagine some of them, isn't it?

Asteroids: Create a couple infinite looping shot. You never have to move or spin out of control. Just don't get in the way of your own shots.

Pac-Man: Ghosts got you blocked on both sides? Not anymore they don't!

Street Fighter: Hadouken your opponent from behind while facing them.

TMNT: Turtes in Time: Heroes in a halfshell- Turtle Portal!

Tetris: Don't know where to put that piece? Give yourself some time to think.

What do you all think? Any other amusing examples?

Royal Wedding Goes AR: Become Will & Catherine, AR Style
Face-tracking app maker Aptronic has devised a clever and timely app to coordinate with the upcoming already-internationally-infamous Royal Wedding. The app, RoyalMirror is available for the iPad 2 and the iPhone 4 (rear-facing camera is necessary), and tracks your face to overlay a stylized and cartoonish depiction of either Prince William or Princess Catherine that you can promptly share on a variety of social network sites.

Royal Wedding Goes AR: Become Will & Catherine, AR Style
It's a nice addition to an already overwhelming list of lampoons associated with the Wedding of the Century, but it seems novel enough for a few laughs. I think the $0.99 price tag would be more worthwhile if Aptronic had included, say, more than just two royals (who doesn't want to be the Queen of England?) or even a function that allows multiple faces to be tracked for group photos- but hey, I'm not complaining when a mobile augmented reality application has some visibility potential. Plus, Aptronic should see some decent numbers for downloads.

The app was created using the AR SDK of Los Angeles / Paris-based Augmented Reality Solutions firm Total Immersion, who also has a host of AR iOS apps. Aptronic has similar apps available that utilize facial recognition to turn the user into a zombie, amongst other things.

ASUS AMD Motherboards To Support SLI'd NVIDIA Video Card
Man, can we get anymore anagrams in that headline?

Andrew Burnes of Geforce announced today that they will once again be providing AMD motherboards that support SLI. Kick-ass, Andrew. Hit the jump for a photo of one of these shiny new toys, and to check out the rest of the press release.

As gamers we know how important it is to find the best price-performance ratio when building a new rig. For several years, gamers have been clamouring for us to reintroduce SLI support for AMD motherboards, and as hard as it may be to believe, SLI was first seen on AMD motherboards in fact, but as the years went by AMD's stature as the preferred platform for gamers fell by the wayside.
However, due to the increasing abundance of affordable, high performance kit across all aspects of the industry, and continued calls for the reintroduction of SLI support for AMD motherboards, we figured that now is a great time to do it. After all, we want to make sure that gamers can benefit from the new competitive CPU landscape and to ensure that their existing SLI setups can be utilised in all systems, and that new buyers can make use of NVIDIA SLI, the highest performance, most stable multi-GPU solution.
According to Steam's monthly hardware survey, ninety-three percent of all multi-GPU systems in use today use SLI. So, due to overwhelming demand, we are pleased to announce that SLI is being licensed by the world's leading motherboard manufacturers for integration into the next-generation of AMD motherboards, including 990FX, 990X and 970 chipsets. ASUS, Gigabyte, ASRock, and MSI are among the first motherboard manufacturers to offer this new capability for AMD, with more coming on-board shortly.
As you can see in the image below, one of the first AMD motherboard with SLI capabilities will be ASUS' Republic Of Gamers Crosshair V Formula, the latest version of their extremely popular and well-reviewed AMD gaming motherboard.

MAINGEAR Announces EPIC 180 Liquid CPU Cooler System
MAINGEAR, an award-winning custom PC builder offering custom desktops, custom notebooks, pc workstations and media centers, is announcing the release of their exclusive MAINGEAR EPIC (Enhanced Performance InterCooler) liquid cooling solutions by CoolIT for their entire desktop lineup.

In tradition with their legacy of innovation and design, MAINGEAR has collaborated with CoolIT to design the EPIC line of CPU cooling systems, which are the first of their kind in existence. The MAINGEAR EPIC cooling solution provides a distinct advantage in all the problem areas of existing CPU cooling units: performance, loudness, and durability.

MAINGEAR Announces EPIC 180 Liquid CPU Cooler System
Key features are highlighted below:

Higher Performance

The MAINGEAR EPIC 180 liquid cooling system sports a massive 180mm radiator which offers 20% cooler temperatures than a 120mm radiator. It outperforms all high end air coolers on the market today and goes toe to toe with hand built liquid cooling solutions.

The thermal resistance of the EPIC 180 is an incredible 0.075 degrees C/W (Celsius per watt), which means even an extremely overclocked CPU will have the heat dissipation needed to keep it cool and stable. The MAINGEAR EPIC 180 will outperform 120mm solutions increasing up to 20% performance while maintaining a fan speed of less than 1000 rpm.

Forward Thinking Design

The EPIC 180 liquid cooling system not only keeps the MAINGEAR SHIFT much cooler, but the streamlined design also shows the engineering and innovative thought process behind it. The copper material on the surface utilizes a patented cold plate with Microfin technology that allows maximum heat transfer between the CPU and the cooling system.

Affordable and Maintenance Free

Not only does the new EPIC cooling system outperform most hand built liquid cooling units out in the market today, the MAINGEAR EPIC 180 is also much more affordable, delivering greater results for less money.

Customers that have this cooling solution will also be happy to hear it has a closed loop circuit design which requires no maintenance, so they don't have to check on it for liquid at all. Ever.

"The EPIC 180 is the most aggressive cooling system we've ever built and we were delighted to work with the MAINGEAR team to create a custom built system that delivers the ultimate in silent cooling." Said Geoff Lyon, President and CEO of CoolIT Systems Inc. "MAINGEAR has been fearless in its no-holds-barred approach to building the fastest PC's in the world and it's our privilege to be an exclusive part of their product strategy."

"The EPIC liquid cooling series that we are offering on our desktops is our testament to constantly innovate and develop ways to make faster, quieter and better products." Said Wallace Santos, Founder and CEO of MAINGEAR. "Working with CoolIT was a perfect partnership where we were able to combine the best of engineering, functionality and design."

The SHIFT custom pc will have the option of selecting the EPIC 180, while the F131 gaming pc will sport the EPIC 140 (available soon) and the Vybe will have the EPIC 120 cooling solutions respectively. The EPIC 180 and 120 are available today. All MAINGEAR EPIC liquid cooling systems are incredibility silent at idle, whisper quiet under load, and allow MAINGEAR custom built computers to be overclocked even more than ever.

All of MAINGEAR products are supported with lifetime labor and phone support with one to three year hardware warranty.
