Toshiba Cevo TV face recognition tech explained
Today's TVs haven't quite gone all SkyNet and become free-thinking machines ready to take over the world, but the arrival of Toshiba's new Cevo TV range means that they can now recognise just who is watching them.
This is because Toshiba's latest WL and YL series have cameras built-in which will pick up a person's face as they enter the room and adapt the viewing experience to their tastes.
This is all done with a mix of facial recognition – much like you would find on a digital camera – and Toshiba's new Personal TV feature.
Cevo tv
For it to work, you need the television to first map your face. Once this is done, you can create a TV profile for yourself.
This Personal TV profile can be used every time you switch the TV on.
The feature is designed to help create profiles personal to each user's viewing habits, so that when you walk in the room you don't have to meddle with the TV to suit your tastes.
Cevo tv
Using an integrated camera and face recognition tech, Personal TV allows up to four users to create their own profile containing a variety of personal preferences, remembering their favourite viewing options, sound levels and picture settings, as well as the personalised channel list.
Cevo tv
The integrated camera is clever enough to uses face recognition technology to identify each user at start-up, and will automatically apply that user's preferred settings.
It also switches the TV to standby mode if it thinks nobody is watching the TV for a long time, so you better stop giving your TV a blank look.
Cevo tv
Face-recognition on a TV is an advertisers' dream, as knowing who has hold of the remote means you can tailor advertising around specific people instead of using demographics.
For now, though, Toshiba is using the technology purely to offer a better user experience to the TV watcher but it will be interesting to see how far the technology is taken in the future.
Cevo tv
Face Recognition and Personal TV are features of the Regza WL and Regza YL 3D PRO-LED TV series, which have a UK release date of June.

Toshiba Places, the new web platform from Toshiba, will be making its way to the UK in the coming months hitching a ride on the next generation of Regza TVs.
Like the Samsung Smart Hub and Panasonic Vieracast before it, the internet portal is initially part of Tosh's TV setup.
Unlike the aforementioned, though, Places is set to become part of the entire Toshiba eco-system, eventually finding its way on to laptops and tablets.
Toshiba Places is broken down into a number of sections, all of which are available from the main hub.
Toshiba places
Here you can get to: Video Place, Social Place, Music Place and News Place. In each of the sections you will find apps which will allow you to connect to various web-based services.
At the moment, what's on offer is fairly limited. Apps which are on most other connected services are present and correct, though, There is the obligatory YouTube app, one for DailyMotion and you can also access Flickr from the portal.
Toshiba places
There's a number of news feeds to choose from and you can also access any of your own content from here as well.
TechRadar asked if the Toshiba Places was going to get any Twitter and Facebook integration, but it seems we will have to wait until the second integration of the service is released before this happens.
Toshiba places
While Toshiba Places isn't mind-blowing at the moment, there is a lot of promise here.
It is a platform that hopes to bridge the TV/laptop/tablet divide. This is because the system is platform agnostic and will remember your habits.
All you have to do is sign into the service, and it will remember where you are on, say, a YouTube video. This means you can begin watching it on your TV and start where you left off on a tablet.
Toshiba places
This current dream for Toshiba Places is that it won't just be consigned to Toshiba devices, as you can access the portal it through a browser.
We will have to wait until May when it is launched on Tosh's Regza range to see if it is also the reality.

Windows 8 to kill off Adobe Reader?
Windows 8 is set to include its own native PDF reader, signalling the end of forced Adobe Reader integration.
A thousand weary PDF perusers are no doubt crying tears of happiness at the mere thought of never again having to update their PDF reader eighty-four times a day.
Hopefully the proprietary reader will also see an end to the almost-mandatory desktop shortcut that Adobe Reader drops on your desktop every time you update - but then again, this is Microsoft so we wouldn't bet on it.
Modernity
The new Microsoft PDF reader is known as 'Modern Reader', and uses the new AppX application package type, which is very similar to that of Windows Phone 7 and is likely to be used in Windows Phone 8 software too.
This should make emailing and opening PDF files on your phone and computer a much smoother experience, we'd hope, and could make developing cross-device applications much easier for devs.
The screenshots of the Modern Reader UI are pretty standard, featuring a very Windows Phone 7-esque look; it renders PDFs in full fidelity, offers zoom, allows for side-by-side page viewing and has a bookmark side-bar for skipping through chapters.

Toshiba launches P770 and P775 laptops packing 3D webcams
Toshiba has unveiled its latest 3D-toting laptops, the Toshiba P770 and P775, both of which pack in 3D webcams, and the Satellite L-Series with 3D playback capabilities.
Does the inclusion of 3D webcams speak of 3D Skype video chats to come? It's a scary but unsurprising prospect.
Skype does not yet support 3D webcams, but TechRadar has put a call in to Skype today, following Toshiba's latest laptop announcements, to find out how soon we might expect to see such a feature supported on the popular VoIP service.
Meanwhile, the 3D tech in the new Toshiba L and P series laptops is pretty standard stuff, with pricing expected to be announced soon.
3D or not 3D, that is the question
Toshiba's all new Satellite P-series laptops are top of the range affairs, available intwo screen sizes: the Satellite P755 and P759 are 15.6-inch laptops, while the Satellite P770 and Satellite P775, feature slightly larger 17.3-inch screens.
As well as the P-Series laptops, Toshiba has unveiled its new Satellite L-series notebooks today.
These feature 2D-to-3D image conversion and external 3D playback, with integrated Onkyo speakers to "deliver immersive sound to match stunning visuals".
Premium
"Available in a choice of three screen sizes and a range of configurations, each model features impressive hardware specifications, including the latest Intel or AMD processors, dedicated Nvidia graphics on selected models, as well as a selection of premium 3D features," continues Tosh's release.
Toshiba will let us know more about UK pricing for the new Satellite L-series and P-series, both of which will be available from late April 2011.

First Cevo-powered Toshiba Regza 3D TVs unveiled
Toshiba has finally shown-off the first batch of Toshiba Regza TVs with a Cevo chip inside.
It's been a long time coming but, at its World Forum in Rome, Toshiba revealed that its YL and WL Regza TV series will come with the Cevo chip - an ultra-powerful, multi-core processing platform - which is a revised version of the Cell architecture seen in the Japanese Cell TV range.
The chip offers a number of features including active 3D, 2D-to-3D conversion and new 3D Resolution+ and NetResolution+ imaging technologies.
Face detection
The TVs have been designed by Jacob Jensen and also come with Toshiba Places, an online portal that connects to Dailymotion, BBC iPlayer, Box Office 365, Flickr and the like.
There's a Freeview HD tuner on board and the TVs will come in 42, 46 and 55-inch flavours. The YL and WL range will also come with built-in Wi-Fi, DLNA and Windows 7 compatibility.
To make watching television a more personal experience, Tosh has also integrated something called Personal TV into the sets.
Essentially this means that you can pin-protect your own channel set-up (in case you don't want your partner to see your favourite channels for some reason) as well as remembering sound levels and picture settings.
And if that wasn't enough new tech, the YL and WL range will be the first in the word to have face detection built-in as well - so it will know who is watching the TV as soon as you walk into the room. Scary.
There's no UK release date or pricing but we will keep you posted as to when these mighty powerful TVs enter the UK.

Seagate launches 'world's slimmest' external hard drive
Seagate has unveiled its latest external hard drive in the form of the GoFlex Slim, purportedly the slimmest of its kind.
It comes in at 9mm slim – that's 0.2mm thicker than an iPad 2 and roughly about the width of a pencil, apparently.
But within that slinky frame, the GoFlex Slim packs in a 7200RPM drive, USB 3.0 ports for super-fast file transfer and 320GB of storage space.
Drive hard
The hard drive will also come bundled with back-up software for automatic and continuous back-ups, and file and folder encryption. Safety first!
Compatible with both Windows and Mac, the Seagate GoFlex Slim comes with a price tag of around آ£80.
Given that they perform an essential chore, it's really a shame that external hard drives don't exactly light a fire of passion in our souls – even a super slinky dinky little one like the GoFlex Slim.

Toshiba Places comes to Regza TV range
Toshiba has finally revealed that the Regaza Series of televisions will come with Toshiba Places, its online portal that's set to rival the likes of the Samsung Smart Hub.
It is able to, according to Toshiba, "seamlessly access and share content across multiple devices, including TVs, multimedia tablets, PCs and laptops."
All over the Place
Toshiba Places is set to be a hub for music, gaming, apps, social networking and other services. It was first shown off at IFA 2010 and now Toshiba is expanding the portal on to its new television range.
The TVs to get Toshiba Places will be the Regza UL, SL, VL and WL series.
Toshiba is hoping to put Places on to a whole host of different products but, to make sure they are all singing from the same online hymn sheet, Tosh is offering a single Toshiba ID.
Once this is created, users can get direct access to content and services from Toshiba Places partners, all of which can be accessed from a range of different devices.
Toshiba has announced that BBC iPlayer will be coming to the service, alongside Flickr and Dailymotion.

However, there's no UK release date yet as the date for the Regza range is still to be announced.
