SugarCRM buys Lotus Notes tools, cozies up to IBM
SugarCRM has acquired iExtensions, which makes customer relationship management (CRM) software for IBM Lotus Notes users, in a bid to attract more enterprise customers and compete better against bigger rivals like Salesforce.com and Microsoft. The announcement was made Tuesday at the SugarCon conference in San Francisco, where SugarCRM also released a beta of the Spring Release of its CRM software. The update adds "social CRM" features and native client applications for the iPad, Blackberry and Android devices.

TI buys National Semiconductor for $6.5 billion
Texas Instruments on Monday announced it has agreed to acquire semiconductor company National Semiconductor for $6.5 billion in an all-cash transaction. TI, which makes low-power chips, said it would combine its 30,000 analog products and advanced manufacturing capabilities with the offerings of National Semiconductor, which makes analog integrated circuits.

Oracle releases 11g database Express Edition beta
Oracle 11g XE (Express Edition), the free-of-charge version of Oracle's flagship database, is now in beta. XE provides an "entry-level, small-footprint RDBMS" based on 11g Release 2 code, said Oracle Technology Network director Justin Kestelyn in a blog post late Friday announcing the news.

Google bids $900 million for Nortel patent portfolio
Google is bidding $900 million in cash for thousands of patents that Nortel will auction off as part of its bankruptcy proceedings, the companies said Monday. The proposed deal is what's known as a "stalking horse" asset sale agreement, where the Google offer sets the minimum bar for other bidders for the portfolio of about 6,000 patents and patent applications, which cover a broad range of telecommunications, Internet search and social networking technologies.

Equity firm Apax Partners to buy Epicor, Activant
Private equity firm Apax Partners is buying Epicor and Activant in a deal that will create one of the world's largest ERP (enterprise resource planning) software vendors, the companies announced Monday. Apax is to pay $976 million for Epicor. Specific terms of the offer for privately held Activant were not disclosed, but Apax said the combined deal was worth about $2 billion. The deal is expected to close in this quarter.
