Google The Target of an Antitrust Probe?
This is like the third article in the last three weeks claiming Google is possibly the target of a Federal Trade Commission antitrust probe. An FTC investigation of Google, the world's most popular search engine, "could be on par" with the scope of the Justice Department's probe of Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) a decade ago, said Keith Hylton, an antitrust law professor at Boston University School of Law. Google "could fight the FTC, but that's going to cost a lot of money and time." Comments

Activision Hit With Fraud Charges In West/Zampella Suit
I know, I know, that headline is a bit misleading, "hit with fraud charges" makes it sound like Activision was cuffed and arrested for fraud. Here's the scoop: In an amended complaint obtained by GameSpot, ex-Infinity Ward execs Jason West and Vince Zampella added two counts of fraud to their suit against Activision. The two gentlemen have alleged that the publisher entered into a Memorandum of Understanding in March 2008, prior to Acitvision's merger with Vivendi. This contract was created to "address issues of significant concern to West and Zampella, particularly in the area of creative authority over the Modern Warfare games and the creation of a look, feel, and brand for the Modern Warfare games." Thanks to [H] forum member Eisenblut for the link. Comments

Comodo Hacker Says He's Protesting U.S. Policy
The "ComodoHacker" claims he did what he did to protest U.S. foreign policy. Once he is caught, the U.S. plans on giving him the opportunity to protest our prison policies. Well, not quite. The perpetrator claims to be a 21-year-old Iranian patriot--a "single programmer with the experience of 1,000 programmers"--who told CNET he carried out the intrusion in large part to protest the policies of the U.S. government. AMD Amends Wafer Supply Agreement with GLOBALFOUNDRIES
AMD today announced that it amended its Wafer Supply Agreement (WSA) with GLOBALFOUNDRIES Inc. The primary purpose of the amendment was to revise the pricing methodology applicable to wafers delivered in 2011 for AMD's microprocessor and accelerated processing unit (APU) products. The amendment also modified AMD's existing commitments regarding future increases in production of certain graphics processing unit (GPU) and chipset products at GLOBALFOUNDRIES. Under the amended agreement, GLOBALFOUNDRIES has committed to provide AMD with, and AMD has committed to purchase, a fixed number of 45nm and 32nm wafers per quarter in 2011. AMD will pay GLOBALFOUNDRIES fixed prices for 45nm wafers delivered in 2011. AMD's price for 32nm products will be based on good die. Comments

Cloud Computing Transforming Fragmented Manufacturing Industry
New technology advancements available in a digital infrastructure, such as cloud computing and social computing, are transforming manufacturing industry value chains, according to a Microsoft Corp. survey released today at HANNOVER MESSE 2011 in Hannover, Germany. The survey results revealed a need to better integrate collaboration tools with business systems (47.4 percent) and to improve access to unstructured data and processes (36.2 percent). Almost 60 percent see an industrywide collaboration that includes manufacturing products and services providers, IT providers, systems integrators and in-house business analysts as most capable of bringing about these improvements. MPAA Sues Movie-Streaming Service Zediva
Here's a good way to get on the MPAA's bad side...stream movies for money without permission. No really, they love that. The MPAA is taking action against one of the hottest, if legally questionable, online streaming services, Zediva, which has gained a boisterous following since its launch earlier this year by going places that Netflix won't -- streaming relatively recent films like The Fighter, The Social Network and Black Swan. Professor Arrested For Shutting Students Laptop
This almost sounded like an April Fool's prank...until the teacher was arrested and suspended. Comments on the site said that the student had been warned to stop surfing the web and had ignored the professor. Generally, the comments were supportive of the professor and critical of the student. "Arrested for battery. For closing a laptop? Did it break the students fingers or something? I was thinking he hit a student with a computer. Simply closing it may be a little trivial to ruin a man's entire life over don't ya think?" said one comment. Comments

Self-Cooling Observed in Graphene
Researchers from the University of Illinois have discovered that graphene transistors have a self-cooling effect that could lead to graphene-based chips that require little or no cooling. "In silicon and most materials, the electronic heating is much larger than the self-cooling," King said. "However, we found that in these graphene transistors, there are regions where the thermoelectric cooling can be larger than the resistive heating, which allows these devices to cool themselves. This self-cooling has not previously been seen for graphene devices." Comments

Thermaltake Level 10 GT Full Tower Case
If you are in the market for a new case, make sure you check out PC Perspective's review of Thermaltake's Level 10 GT case. I've said it before and I'll say it again, this case would be perfect for people that like the looks of the Level 10 but don't have the budget for it. While we had the pleasure of doing a hands-on review of the original Level 10 case, we were very excited with all the features Thermaltake emulated from it on the Level 10 GT. We were also highly impressed that Thermaltake was daring enough to try and create a consumer-level case out of the astronomically-priced Level 10 case. The overall design of the Level 10 GT is easily on par with the original Level 10, but Thermaltake included other related features like a hinged side panel door and removable hard drive cages Comments

Apple Store Security Will Shoot You
Today's "stupid criminal" story comes to you from California where one suspect was shot and killed during a botched burglary at the Chula Vista Apple store. Seriously folks, iPads aren't worth dying over. Two men and woman apparently did a "smash and grab," in which glass doors and windows are broken and merchandise is grabbed quickly, CVPD Capt. Gary Facicci said. A private armed security guard interrupted the burglars and at some point, gunfire was exchanged with the two male burglars Comments

AMD's "Llano" APU is Shipping
AMD's Senior PR Manager made a blog post today announcing that the "Llano" APU is now shipping. Here's a quote from the blog post and a shot of AMD's team in Singapore celebrating the launch: Yes, that is about as unoriginal of a title as you will see (other options were "Ship, Ship Hurray!" or "The Ship felt Around the World") but truth of the matter is that after more than 15 years of writing press releases, I still hate spinning my wheels on catchy headlines. Today's news is strong enough on its own that simple works in this case. The product itself is the headline: Production units of AMD's 32 nanometer quad-core "Llano" A-Series Accelerated Processor Units (APU) with discrete-level graphics are now shipping. Comments
