Israeli Company Discusses Plans on Electric Car Infrastructure
There is one Israeli man with big goals for the new decade, his name is Shai Agassi and he is the founder of Better Place. Agassi's company focuses on new development for electric cars and has plans for a large scale movement aimed at shifting Israel's dependence on oil. Better Place will not only manufacture electric cars but also create widespread networks of electric charging stations. Agassi is driven towards enabling electric cars with even modestly ranged 100 mile batteries to travel to anywhere in the country. Electric car drivers will eventually have three different methods of battery range extension. When on the road, users can trade out their batteries at one of the Better Place facilities, which would take 5 minutes or less. When at a rest stop, Better Place will have small trickle charge posts available for use. Of course when the electric car is at home for the night, it can be charged while the driver is not using the vehicle.
Better Place has been conducting research with varying loads of occupants to quantify the battery range necessary to travel between the cities of Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. Better Place has converted a regular Renault Fluence, a four-door sedan, to its first electric car. The built-in GPS in the vehicle will have a locator for its operator to find Better Place charging facilities, but looks no different than a normal car from the outside. Agassi says that electric motorists will subscribe to Better Place's network of services based on the frequency of their driving and there will be an unlimited subscription available.

Sony Admits to PSN Hack, Personal Information Taken
This is certainly something no one with a PlayStation 3 wants to hear, but Sony has finally admitted to why the PlayStation Network has been down. It seems that hackers have breached the PSN and taken virtually every bit of personal information there was to take. Sony is unsure if stored credit card information was also taken, but it is advising caution regardless. The hackers have your name, address, country, email address, birth date, and PSN password and login information. "It is also possible that your profile data, including purchase history and billing address (city, state, zip), and your PlayStation Network/Qriocity password security answers may have been obtained. If you have authorized a sub-account for your dependent, the same data with respect to your dependent may have been obtained," said Sony. The company does say you should be safe instead of sorry and keep an eye on your bank account, if you had your credit card information stored on the PSN that is.
For your security, we encourage you to be especially aware of email, telephone, and postal mail scams that ask for personal or sensitive information. Sony will not contact you in any way, including by email, asking for your credit card number, social security number or other personally identifiable information. If you are asked for this information, you can be confident Sony is not the entity asking. When the PlayStation Network and Qriocity services are fully restored, we strongly recommend that you log on and change your password. Additionally, if you use your PlayStation Network or Qriocity user name or password for other unrelated services or accounts, we strongly recommend that you change them, as well. What that means for the end user is not good since almost everything was taken, but at least Sony has finally come clean on why the PSN has been down for nearly a week. Sony is working to restore the PSN as quickly as possible, and when it does, I highly suggest you change your passwords and even login information. If your email account you use to log in also uses that same password, it would be wise to change it as well. Sony also mentions that you can get a free credit report to make sure everything is intact and to tell the three major US credit bureaus to place a "fraud alert" on your file so that no one can obtain anything in your name. Sony preaches caution in the matter, so just keep an eye on your bank account for anything suspicious.
Sony is working with a security firm and is currently in the process of rebuilding the PSN. Once done, Sony should have a much more secure network infrastructure when the PSN is back online. Sony expects to restore some services within a week, but no word on when everything would be back up.

MIT Creates New Solar Cells From Viruses
MIT is currently working at infusing an altered virus into future solar panel installments. The viruses will be able to boost the energy absorbsion of the solar panels by 33%. Currently scientists have put emphasis into research of carbon nanotubes since the nanotubes would allow the photovoltaic cells in each panel to gather a larger cluster of electrons for use as electric current. The issue with using nanotubes is they tend to clump up with one another, inhibiting their ability to gather up electrons. MIT has discovered a bacteria-attacking virus named 'M13' that will be able to keep up to 10 nanotubes at peak performing conditions. The particular strand of M13 has been genetically modified to synthesize titanium dioxide, which is the primary ingredient in dye-sensitive solar cells, or cells that are not created with silicon. M13 may also allow nanotubes to be added to solar cells at room temperature due to its ability to increase water solubility, which will lower manufacturing costs.

Chicken and Beef Fat Biofuels
NASA and the US Air Force have been looking into and experimenting with biofuels that contain chicken and beef fat. As part of NASA's Alternative Aviation Fuels Experiment they have been testing chicken fat fuel, known as Hydrotreated Renewable Jet Fuel. During these tests, the researchers examine the exhaust from the engines to check for contaminates and chemicals. NASA is measuring these biofuel emissions to calculate how much soot and unburned hydrocarbon is being left behind. Along with nitrogen oxides these chemicals will degrade the quality of air we all breathe and NASA states these are the first tests ever done to measure biofuel emissions. The engines that burned the biofuel had 90% less black carbon emissions during idle and just about 60% less during takeoff. The Air Force is looking to fuel half the North American fleet with a synthetic-fuel blend by 2016. Since the Air Force is the largest user of aviation fuel, when the cost of oil goes up $10 per barrel the Air Force ends up paying an additional $600 million for its fuel. I think it is about time everyone starts to get a bit more serious about finding and using alternative fuels for everyday use. I also wonder if a vegan is going to choose to use ethanol over chicken and beef fat fuels.

NASA May Be Required to Set Up Moon Base
US House members have sponsored a bill that directs NASA to return to the Moon by 2022 to build a moon base. During the Bush administration, NASA was given a goal to prepare for long-duration space missions, but due to lack of budget the technology needed to accomplish this goal was nowhere in sight. The goal of the moon base is to allow for sustained human presence on the Moon. The moon base will create a stepping stone for the United States to help with the exploration of Mars along with other future destinations. The bill also justifies itself by stating it would be a huge military advantage since space is considered the "ultimate high ground". Only time will tell what will happen with this bill. Obama has already vetoed bills in the past regarding the return to the Moon.

AT&T Creates Suitcase Cellular Antenna
AT&T has a new suitcase to allow any businesses or law enforcement personnel to provide emergency cell phone service in areas with weak or completely non-existent coverage. When first responders arrive on the scene following a natural disaster, they are in need of a reliable method of communication. Before the creation of the cell tower suitcase, mobile phone providers would have to send mobile access points in the form of full-size trucks. For the new suitcase to function, it must be connected to a satellite dish and also receive an external source of power. The limitations of being such a small service provider is that the max number of simultaneous connections are 14 cell phones and data is available at sub-broadband speeds. The projected service area is a radius of up to half a mile and the prices range from $15,000 to $45,000 plus monthly fees.

Barnes and Noble Nook Color Upgraded to Android 2.2
Barnes and Noble's Nook Color is the latest e-reader from the company and it has some notable features that set it apart from other e-readers. For one, the Nook Color boasts a 7" full color touchscreen and has Google's Android OS running on it. The version of Android that shipped with the Nook Color was just Android 2.1, meaning no Flash support and no access to an app store. However, all of that is changing as the Nook Color has been upgraded to Android 2.2, which you can grab manually or wait for B&N to send to every e-reader. The Nook Color makes for a nice tablet considering its $249 price, though B&N does list it primarily as an e-reader that just happens to have a full color touchscreen on it. The Android 2.2 update for the Nook Color doesn't bring the full-fledged Android Marketplace but rather an "app shop" that Barnes and Noble has loaded with 125 of the most sought after apps. There are also some apps being included with the update, like Angry Birds and Pandora, plus the Web browser is getting an upgrade as well. The Nook Color now supports Flash 10.1 in various apps, e-books, and the Web browser, which brings this little tablet more inline with other devices.
The Nook Color 1.2 update can be downloaded from the B&N website now or you can wait until it gets pushed out OTA over the next few weeks.

Webcam Program Coming To Windows
With Microsoft coming off with more new features in every build of Windows 8, more users are leaking the information to the public, whether fully true or not. It seems like the new Windows Operating System will feature a dedicated webcam program in the latest build, which though is rough right now, could be improved on quite a bit over time. As of right now, the webcam program has the ability to take picture, either on the fly or timed, along with record video. Settings are also pretty basic with application settings along with webcam settings being included in the new Windows addition, with ten total settings being able to be adjusted between both. Some of these include zoom, exposure, resolution, frame rate, and more, with hopefully more features being included as the program develops alongside Windows 8.

Nintendo Confirms New Console at E3, Shipping in 2012
We previously reported on a rumor that Nintendo will debut a new console at this year's E3. Well, those rumors have been confirmed by none other than Nintendo itself as it plans to have a playable version of the new console at E3. Nintendo also is planning to have the console ready to ship in 2012, though no details on exactly what the console would be came with the announcement. Nintendo did drop just how many Wii consoles have been shipped since it debuted at the tail end of 2006 which is 86.01 million. That is quite an impressive number considering the Wii brings motion-gaming and no HD to the living room, but Nintendo definitely knew what it was doing. Perhaps the next console can have as much success as the current one, but if you're thinking it will be 3D gaming well think again. Nintendo president Satoru Iwata notes that 3D will be difficult to bring to a home console because 3DTVs are not mainstream yet, so it is looking like we'll have something truly innovative on the horizon from Nintendo.
E3 starts on June 7th this year when we'll all get a first look at just what the successor to the Nintendo Wii will be.
