Razer Unveils Hydra Motion Sensing PC Controller; Coming June with Portal 2
Razer and Sixense Entertainment today unveiled the Razer Hydra motion sensing PC controller. The Razer Hydra, first announced at CES 2010 (OCC coverage here) is finally ready for pre-orders next month.

The Razer Hydra is a PC-exclusive motion sensing controller, and offers astounding accuracy down to a millimeter or a degree using electromagnetic fields. The Hydra features an analogue thumbstick, four Hyperesponse buttons, a rapid-fire trigger and a bumper connected to the base station by a braided cable. The controller does not need a line of sight to operate and can function around 2-3 feet from the base station, enabling 3D game immersion. The Razer Hydra will be compatible with over 125 PC games on release, including Portal 2, Left 4 Dead 2 and Call of Duty: Black Ops.

Pre-orders for the Razer Hydra will start next month with a Razer Hydra Portal 2 bundle priced at US$140, including two motion sensing controllers, a base station and a full copy of Portal 2, along with six exclusive Sixense TrueMotion levels. The Razer Hydra will be available in June. You can find out more about the Hydra here.

Twitter Puts a Stop to Excessive Posting
Twitter is not a service that has received many updates toward improving its end-user experience, but recently it is planning to add a new feature familiar to many Facebook users. Twitter plans on targeting excessive posters and automatically hide that individual’s messages to prevent an overwhelming flood of messages to anyone following that feed. So far this feature has only been made available to a small portion of Twitter users, but will eventually be applied to its entire user base. Many users should be grateful for the upcoming addition, because the only way they could prevent excessive message notifications before was to un-follow that feed. It is not surprising that Twitter has adopted a similar feature to Facebook, seeing that both social networking sites are in fierce competition with one another.

China iPhone Sales Going Strong
The iPhone has had a pretty large following ever since its introduction into the mobile phone market, and recently sales in China have skyrocketed. Since 2010 sales of Apple's smartphone have risen 250%, pushing its revenues nearly four times as high as before in China. When the iPhone was first offered to the citizens of China, it had been stripped of its wireless adapter due to the strict Chinese technology policies. Eventually the wireless capability was reinstated but sales still had not caught on as strongly as in the United States. Chinese interest began building for the iPhone 4 which was to be released four weeks after the older versions of iPhones had been given back its WiFi ability. Once released, the iPhone 4 quickly sold out and shortages were commonplace among many of the retailers. Many of the Chinese consumers consider the iPhone to be a sort of status symbol, and market researchers have found that stores who stock Apple products seem to have a more successful business. Despite Apple's recent success in China, it still is not the most popular handset in the country. The top names in the industry are Samsung, Motorola, and Nokia for mobile phone dominance in the region, despite Apple's 5.4% increase of market share.

Fable III Launches May 17 for PC, Available on Steam
PC gamers may be waiting for some time still before we can get our hands on Fable 2, but Fable III won't have much of a wait. Microsoft has announced that Fable III will be hitting the PC on May 17th, and even though it is a Microsoft title, will be available through Steam. You will more than likely still need to run Games for Windows Live even with the Steam version of Fable III, but at least it will be available by that means. If you pre-order it through GFWL, you will get Fable: The Lost Chapters (the first game) for free as well as something called the "Rebel's Weapon and Tatoo Pack." Presumably that will include a unique weapon and set of tattoos to deck out your in-game character. The PC version of Fable III will include all the content previously available through the limited collector's edition of the Xbox 360 game, so at least you are getting a little something extra for waiting.

Gamefly Wins Dispute with US Postal Service
Gamefly has had a dispute with the US Postal Service for over two years. The main point behind the dispute is that Gamefly felt its discs weren't behind afforded the same care that discs from Netflix and even Blockbuster were being afforded. Gamefly was having to pay extra for hand-sorting of its discs, which are all video games, that Netflix was getting done free of charge. Now, that dispute has been settled in favor of Gamefly after the Postal Regulatory Commission found that the USPS gave "an unreasonable preference" to Netflix's mail. The PRC ordered the USPS to create two rate categories for the DVD mailings used by Gamefly, Netflix, and other rent-by-mail companies. Gamefly no longer needs to pay any extra for the discs to be hand-sorted, something that was required due to the heavier size of the Gamefly envelopes due to the cardboard sleeve protecting each game. This is good news for Gamefly since the company should be able to turn more of a profit now, and perhaps the savings will be passed along to the consumer.

PlayStation Network Still Down
With the outage occurring yesterday, Sony claimed then that it was aware of the downed network, but that it did not have anymore information than that. Today Sony has posted on the website that it may be a day or two until the service finally comes back online so that PlayStation gamers can finally play each other in multiplayer games and enjoy the Sony free online experience. It is not yet known if the outage was from an attack from an outside source, but the European PlayStation website had said yesterday that it believes such a thing to be true. Gamers probably care less however, and just want the network back up, but it is obvious that only time will tell when Sony fixes everything and brings the PlayStation Network back to a full working unit again.

Lasers Could Replace Spark Plugs in Internal Combustion Engines
During the Conference on Lasers and Electro Optics, Japanese researchers will explain how a multibeam laser system can replace the use of spark plugs in an internal combustion engine. Researchers state that the laser system can be produced inexpensively if in large quantities and is made from ceramics. Since the laser will be made from ceramics it will be much stronger and durable then conventional laser systems. This new laser system will reduce emissions from nitrogen oxides, which is what makes smog, and will also help improve fuel economy. Lasers will allow for a quicker combustion within the engine and the quicker the combustion the more efficient your engine becomes giving us better fuel economy. I look forward to seeing if this technology will end up under the hood of our cars in the future, but I would also miss checking my spark plugs to see if my car is running too lean or rich. I also think this factor might make a few car gurus and mechanics upset as well.

Verbatim Announces Store 'n' Go USB 3.0 Flash Drives
Verbatim today announced its latest USB 3.0 offerings, in the form of three Store 'n' Go flash drives. The drives feature incredible transfer speeds of up to 70MB/s (write) and up to 120MB/s (read) via the USB 3.0 interface. As always, the drives are backwards compatible with USB 2.0 and USB 1.1 ports, albeit with slower data rates. The Store 'n' Go drives have a 'push and pull' design, helping to protect the USB connector and eliminating the need for a cap.
Hans Christoph Kaiser, Business Development Manager Flash Verbatim EUMEA, went on to say that "USB 3.0 drives make a lot of sense because they are 100 percent compatible with USB 2.0 and offer far superior speeds to devices that have USB 3.0 ports. We are expecting the bulk of the premium USB flash storage market to migrate to USB3.0 within the next 18 months."
The Verbatim Store 'n' Go flash drives will be available this month in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB variants.
