AMD posted strong results
AMD has posted better than expected quarterly earnings and the company believes it can continue to beat expectations thanks to upcoming Fusion products. Q1 revenue was $1.61 billion, slightly higher than analysts’ expectations. Net income in the same quarter was $510 million, compared with $257 million in Q1 last year. However the graphics business reported an operating income of $19 million, compared with $47 million in the same period last year. AMD blames the downturn on seasonal market trends and reduced average sales prices.

Acer Iconia W500 tablet starts shipping
Acer has begun shipping the Iconia W500, a tablet equipped to run Windows 7 Home Premium or Windows 7 Professional. The device appears to be an adaptation of the Android 3.0-based A500, but with an AMD dual-core Fusion processor and Radeon integrated graphics. Both tablets integrate 10.1-inch displays with LED backlighting and 1280x800 resolution.

Sony shipped 50 million PS3s
As of the end of last month, Sony has shipped 50 million PS3 units worldwide so far, and it appears that most of those consoles have been sold to consumers. Additionally, Sony has sold 8 million Move motion control systems as of April 3rd. As a reminder, the PS3 launched in late November 2006 and the Move was released in September 2010.

iPhone 5 scheduled for September
According to new sources, the iPhone 5 will begin shipping in September, later than the usual June launch date for Apple's popular smartphone. The phone will look very similar to the iPhone 4 in form factor, but will include a dual-core CPU.

Western Digital didn't do so well in Q1
Western Digital had to face adverse conditions in the three-month period ended April 1st, which was the company's Q3 of fiscal 2011, and that is shows in its revenue which was of $2.25 billion, down from $2.64 billion one year ago. Drive shipments also slipped on-year, from 51 million to 50 million (the company is still ahead of arch-rival Seagate which announced it delivered 49 million units), as did the net income which settled at $146 million ($400 million in Q3 of FY 2010).

Nokia reports 10.4 billion Euro revenue in Q1
Nokia signed the definitive agreement with Microsoft regarding their February-announced collaboration, and presented its Q1 results which, while not bad, are nothing to really brag about, especially when you're on the verge of major layoffs. The company made sales of €10.4 billion in Q1 - down 18% compared to Q4 2010 but up 9% on year, and managed to ship 108.5 million mobile devices (up 1% on-year, down 12% sequentially), 24.2 million units being smartphones and so-called mobile computers. Based on its estimates, Nokia's share in the smartphone market has dropped to 26% this past quarter, having been at 31% in Q4 2010.

TUL has revealed its latest, PowerColor-branded Barts-based graphics card, a Radeon HD 6850 which features stock clocks but comes equipped with a single-slot cooler boasting one fan, a full cover cooling plate with the copper base and three 8mm copper heatpipes.

Apacer makes military standard compliant SODIMMs
Apacer recently announced the strategic collaboration with Diamond Systems Corporation (DSC) based in the US. The move is to develop a specification for rugged SODIMM memory dedicated to DSC’s single-board computers (SBCs). Meeting the US military MIL-STD-202G 12G vibration requirements, the newly unveiled memory module is optimal for use in military vehicle applications and other harsh environments.

Netherlands doesn't like Google Street View
The Dutch Data Protection Authority has threatened Google with new penalties of up to $1.4 million over its collection of MAC addresses while gathering data for its Street View mapping service. To date, this would be the largest fine levied against Google related to Street View. Google has collected the MAC addresses from over 3.6 million Dutch Wi-Fi routers while it has been taking street-level photographs of Dutch streets. The Dutch DPA contends that these addresses, each of which is unique to a specific router, constitutes personal data, and that Google should give the router owners an option to opt-out . If Google does not comply within three months, then the maximum penalty would be levied.
