At a special hearing by the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform in San Jose, Calif. Monday on high-tech growth policies, its chairman, Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.), called for a liberalization of the H-1B cap.

Intel's Q1 boosted by strong demand for data center products
Intel reported growth in revenue and income for the first quarter of 2011, driven by the addition of new products and strength in the enterprise market. The company reported net income of $3.2 billion on a GAAP (generally accepted accounting principles) basis for the quarter ended on April 2, up 29 percent compared to the same quarter a year ago. The company reported earnings per share of $0.56.

IBM reports 'best first-quarter growth in over a decade'
IBM on Tuesday reported quarterly sales growth across all its major divisions and raised its earnings outlook for the full year, the latest sign that business spending in the IT sector continues to recover. IBM's total revenue for the quarter ended March 31 was $24.6 billion, up 8 percent from the same quarter a year earlier, or up 5 percent on a constant currency basis. Net income after one-time charges climbed 10 percent to $2.9 billion, IBM said.

ARM Cortex-A15 expected to debut in mobile devices in late 2012
Smartphones and tablets will be the first devices to use ARM's upcoming Cortex-A15 processor, which will be available starting late 2012 or early 2013, an ARM executive said this week. ARM's partners will initially use dual-core processors, and later on quad-core parts, in mobile devices, said James Bruce, the U.S. mobile segment manager at ARM Holdings.

Hitachi expands portable storage drives to cloud
Hitachi Global Storage Technologies on Tuesday introduced new Touro storage offerings that package local and online storage so that data can be accessed locally or through the cloud via smartphones and tablets. The new Touro Pro line includes portable storage devices for local backup, and free online storage of up to 3GB for cloud backup, Hitachi said in a statement. The company provides applications for data to be backed up simultaneously on both accounts, or to be transported between storage accounts.
