Duke Nukem Forever = 7k Man-Months of Effort
Gearbox's head honcho says that there are an estimated 7,000 man-months of effort put into Duke Nukem Forever. What the hell is a man-month? It's what you get when you have to explain man-hours in Duke-velopment time.

I have estimated that 3D Realms invested between 3,500 and 4,500 man-months of effort into the game, a lot of which has been lost to the ages. Meanwhile, by the time Gearbox ships the game we'll have put in another 2,500 man months of effort. I've never been involved with a project of this magnitude. By comparison, Borderlands, which is by no means a small game and involved the invention of an entirely new universe and new technologies to support crazy features like millions of guns, involved between 3,500 and 4,000 man-months of effort.

MPAA Quote of the Day
The quote of the day is brought to you by the vice president of the MPAA: "Democratizing culture is not in our interest."

MPAA Vice President Greg Frazier has made some interesting comments on copyright and widespread Internet piracy during a lobbying visit to Brazil. Among other things, Frazier told a local newspaper that democratizing culture is not in the interests of the MPAA. As it turns out, the MPAA's definition of creativity and culture is a rather narrow one that is quite different from that of the general public.

Today we are introducing an evolution of one of coolermasters biggest sellers of the last years. The Coolermaster CM 690 II Advanced. By listening to the end users input, the CM engineers have refined the 690 series case. Adding a removable HD bay (to support up to 3GPUs easily), a hot swappable HD docking station, baptised X-docking station, are just a few of the new features or updates as you want.

Ashampoo Hacked, Warns of Malware
If you use any of Ashampoo\'s software or utilities, you should probably read this.

Hackers gained access to one of our servers. We discovered the break-in and interrupted it instantly. The security gap through which the hackers gained access was closed immediately. At the same time we reported this incident to the police. Further investigations are underway. Unfortunately, the traces of the well-concealed hackers currently disperse abroad. That is why the expenditure of the German law enforcement agency was significantly increased and the clearing up has become more difficult.

AMD Radeon HD 6670 and HD 6570 Review
The fellas at PC Perspective have published a review of AMD's new Radeon HD 6670 and HD 6570 budget video cards. What can you get for under $100 these days? From the looks of it, quite a lot:

In the end the AMD Radeon HD 6670 and HD 6570 are solid additions to an already crowded budget graphics card market. They definitely improve on the already solid performance and feature set of the Radeon HD 5600-series of cards and do so at the same launch-time price points. The problem that both of these cards have (and that many graphics releases are seeing recently) is the price merges that occur when higher performance, older GPUs go on sale or offer rebates to take a step down in market.

Dish In Contempt of Court in TiVo Patent Fight
Dish Network has been found in contempt of court by a panel of twelve federal appeals judges for failing to abide by an injunction barring them from using patented TiVo technology.

The judges are sending the case back to a lower court to consider whether a work-around technology being used in newer Dish boxes still infringes on TiVo's patents. Wednesday's ruling by the 12-judge panel for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit — with five judges dissenting in part — pushed TiVo's shares up $2.47, or 30 percent, to $10.84 Wednesday. It marks the latest turn in a seven-year patent fight between TiVo, a pioneer in the DVR industry, and satellite TV operator Dish and its sister company EchoStar, which makes set-top boxes.

Stripper Breaks Into Google
What the hell? A stripper broke into Google last month? Why don't we ever get strippers trying to break in around here? Then again, that wouldn't go over very well with the wife, would it? "I swear honey, she broke in!"

Vera Svechina, the alleged stalker (and former stripper) whom Zynga CEO Mark Pincus filed a restraining order against earlier this year, has also targeted Google cofounders Sergey Brin and Larry Page.

Porn Company Amassing 1-800 Numbers
Dial 1-800-Facebook and you'll get a recorded message for a sex hotline. How can this be? I don't know but I wouldn't call 1-800-Twitter, 1-800-Hotmail or 1-800-Metallica either if I were you! Thanks to J. Schoenstein for the heads up.

Dial 1-800-Chicago and instead of reaching a tourism hotline for the Windy City, you will hear a woman offering "one-on-one talk with a nasty girl" for $2.99 per minute. A similar thing happens if you punch in the initial digits of 1-800-Metallica, 1-800-Cadillac, 1-800-Minolta, 1-800-Cameras, 1-800-Worship or 1-800-Whirlpool.
