IE9 sees 2.35 Million Downloads in First 24 Hours
Microsoft Internet Explorer 9 is off and running with 2.35 million downloads in its first 24 hours. The non-beta version was released this past Monday at 9PM PST, so for that first day people were acquiring IE9 at a rate of about 27 downloads per second. That's around twice the downloads of the IE9 Beta, and a whopping four times the amount of downloads for the release candidate.

IE9 sees 2.35 Million Downloads in First 24 Hours

Though Microsoft is totes psyched (and they should be) about this turn of events, the record holder for most downloads in 24 hours has been rock solid for almost three years, and that blue ribbon will remain with Mozilla's Firefox 3, released June 17 of 2008.
Mozilla is poised to release Firefox 4 next tuesday, and already enjoys a very large percentage of worldwide browser market share, according to this graph from StatCounter:

IE9 sees 2.35 Million Downloads in First 24 Hours

Internet Explorer still has the lead, but not by a steady enough margin for it to be the only horse in this race. Between the upcoming Firefox 4 and the already available Chrome 11 Beta, IE9 could very well be brought down in the coming months by a different champion.

"Apple" iGlasses concept
Disclaimer: it is painfully evident from this video that it has nothing to do with Apple Corporation or any of the products they make. This is clearly a concept video made by an arbitrary user on YouTube illustrating a "What-If" Type scenario.
First off, see above. Then, if you're not entirely sure that this "product" is not connected to Apple, see above again. This is not "coming out" anytime soon, and the hardware is years out. Also, I sincerely doubt that Apple would make "hologram rings". Then again, if anyone could, it'd probaby be them.

Who knows who this person is (YouTube user "AppleiLens")- this video popped up on my #AR Twitter feed from user Peter Meijer (@seeingwithsound), and despite numerous links to tech head gear (including an already existing iGlasses, a sonic mobility aid for near or fully blind people) it is dubious as to whether Peter created this video.
Other than the rampant and undoubtedly unauthorized use of Apple, Google and Netflix, the video seems to be comprised of a few concept-docs and video parsed from other advertisements and promotional campaigns.
Despite its eccentricity, the video does put forth some pretty interesting concepts, all to the tune of theme song from "Crash". Really bizarre.

iPad 2 Gets Blended
Though it's difficult to sit through the dialogue in this clip (especially the part in the script about FaceTime), it's worth a look to see the bane of many a tech company or Apple Store patron get reduced to so much fine ash.

Maybe its the rather healthier-looking chap impersonating Steve Jobs, but there's definitely something about this video that's in poor taste.
To see other things get blended, check out BlendTec's YouTube channel.
This stuff is like the nails-on-chalkboard of campiness.

Crysis 2 Multiplayer Demo Now Available for PS3
Crysis 2, the mega-visual FPS, is the first of the two installments to be released on consoles. A lot of people said Crysis 2 would never stack up to the PC versions, and that the PS3 version was underwhelming, but I had a hands-on look at Crysis 2 during the GDC in San Francisco, and didn't have a single complaint about the visuals, especially not the Passive 3D engine. A new multiplayer demo is now available on the PlayStation Network, so if you are one of the 41 million people that owns a PS3, you really can't miss out on this.

Crysis 2 Multiplayer Demo Now Available for PS3

PlayStation Blog interviewed Nathan Camarillo, the Executive Producer of Crysis 2, who shared many insights on the upcoming game. As I had written before, one of the greatest things about Crysis 2 is the lack of 3D gimmickry in the game design, as Camarillo clearly states in the interview:
we don't throw things out of the screen at you. We start at the TV screen and then push in. This avoids eyestrain and eye fatigue, because we want you to play this for hours and hours.

I caught some video of people at GDC 11 playing the PS3 version (and rather enjoying it), check it out. Also, subscribe to our YouTube channel while you're at it!

Here's the full text of the interview:
PlayStation Blog: We know Crytek can produce on the PC. How do you utilize the PS3 to live up to the high PC standard?
Nathan Camarillo: It's the core of CryEngine 3 that's able to scale appropriately and we can adjust per platform exactly what we wanna get out of it. We want the exact same gameplay experience, the same fun, the same intensity, all the same visual information that you need to understand and play the game appropriately. It's just a lot of under the hood magic.
PSB: One recent IGN article said Crysis 2 didn't look very good on PS3. CVG/PSM disagreed. What's your response?
NC: I've gone on the record saying that if you stick PS3 and 360 side by side I would challenge anyone to find any meaningful difference. I don't see it at all.
PSB: Talk about 3D implementation Crysis 2 on the PS3.
NC: In Cry Engine 3 we have a really tricky implementation of 3D - we're able to generate the 2nd image with little to no impact. We don't lose visual quality, we don't lose resolution. You get the same experience as you get in the 2D game, except it's in 3D, which is better. It's more immersive, it feels better. The 2nd part of our implementation is: we don't throw things out of the screen at you. We start at the TV screen and then push in. This avoids eyestrain and eye fatigue, because we want you to play this for hours and hours. If you're playing single player it's easily 10-12 hours for a good gamer to get through the game.
PSB: What should PS3 gamers be looking out for in the demo?
NC: In most games you're mentally programmed to stick on the ground. If you wanna go one level higher, go find a ladder, go find some stairs. It takes until people see someone jump in front of them that they realize they can jump there. You gotta break the habit of being ground-constrained like in other games.
If it's one story high, you can jump there. If it's a story and half, you can jump and pull yourself up. So it really changes the speed and pace of multiplayer. I can't wait for PlayStation 3 owners to get their taste of crazy, insane nanosuit multiplayer action.

Sega to Donate Sonic Sales to Red Cross to Aid Quake Survivors
Much like the article we posted yesterday about Capcom, SEGA is donating to the Red Cross all of its proceeds from its Sonic iOS titles and the Football Manager Handheld game starting yesterday and continuing all throughout the week.

Sega to Donate Sonic Sales to Red Cross to Aid Quake Survivors

Like the Street Fighter IV iOS download, SEGA is reducing their prices for the following games, all available on the App Store. The prices and links are below:
Sonic the Hedgehog 1 - 1.99
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 - 2.99
Sonic the Hedgehog 4 - 3.99
Sonic Spinball - 0.99
Football Manager Handheld - 9.99
Once again, I urge everyone to contribute. Relief efforts haven't even begun to calculate and account for what must be immeasurable losses in Japan. For less than the price of a $10 Text message, you can download 4 classic games to your iPod touch, iPhone, or iPad. If there's ever been an easier way to get involved, I've never seen one.
For those of you who do not have an iOS device, but want to contribute or donate to the Red Cross anyway, visit here to learn more about how you can help.

GIGABYTE P2532: Thinnest 2nd Gen Core i7 Notebook Hands On

With all the notebooks flooding the market it's nice to find one with a grand claim to fame. "The thinnest 2nd Generation Core i7 Notebook", as with all tech titles like that are fleeting, but they are good while they last. The GIGABYTE P2532 multimedia laptop offers a stylish design with a powerful quad-core 2nd generation Intel Core i7 processor.

GIGABYTE P2532: Thinnest 2nd Gen Core i7 Notebook Hands On

In its 15.6" chassis it sports a full HD display with 1920أ—1080 resolution and a LED backlight screen. Under the hood we've got a 500GB 7200rpm HDD, 4GB of RAM and NVIDIA GeForce GT550M/ 2GB VRAM with Optimus technology. Taking a look around the unit, you'll find a DVD burner, two USB 3.0 ports, HDMI, and THX Tru Studio Pro technology in its 4 speakers and 1 subwoofer. It's not often you'll find such a large machine with only two USB ports, but they are 3.0, so they'll be super fast.

GIGABYTE P2532: Thinnest 2nd Gen Core i7 Notebook Hands On

The other unique feature that this notebook offers is the two huge vents around the back. The issue with making the "thinnest 2nd Gen Core i7" is heat - that CPU is HOT!!! So it's only expected that they've taken serious steps to cool it down.

GIGABYTE P2532: Thinnest 2nd Gen Core i7 Notebook Hands On

If you want to get a sense of what this machine is all about, we've shot a hands on video so you'll be able to see it in action. If you are a bit of a wild one, we've also made available cover samples of the black, red, yellow and orange flavors just in case statement devices are your thing.

ASRock Fatal1ty P67 Professional (Intel P67 Express) Motherboard Review
The Board

ASRock Fatal1ty P67 Professional (Intel P67 Express) Motherboard Review

Ummآ… anyone else having a moment of Dأ©jأ vu? I know I am just from looking at this board. But all that aside, I have to admit the board is pretty good looking. It has a flash combination of colors with the black PCB, gold caps and red pretty much everywhere else.

ASRock Fatal1ty P67 Professional (Intel P67 Express) Motherboard Review

Starting off in the upper right hand corner of the board (as it would look mounted in a case), we find the RAM slots in the typical spot. The 24-Pin ATX power connector is up here also and a legacy PATA port as well.

ASRock Fatal1ty P67 Professional (Intel P67 Express) Motherboard Review

ASRock Fatal1ty P67 Professional (Intel P67 Express) Motherboard Review

The area around the CPU socket is also pretty clean with what looks like some serious trace tuning going from the CPU to the RAM. In case you did not know, ASRock has made sure that you will never forget that this is the Fatal1ty Profess1onal P67. The emblems are all around the CPU socket. The gold capacitors also stand out quite nicely here.

ASRock Fatal1ty P67 Professional (Intel P67 Express) Motherboard Review

The 8-pin aux connector is in a little bit of an awkward place still, but manageable. One thing we do want to point out (and this might just be our board); the Fatal1ty signature emblem was coming off and had to be remounted after I bumped it. I would recommend checking these before you mount this board in your case.

ASRock Fatal1ty P67 Professional (Intel P67 Express) Motherboard Review

ASRock Fatal1ty P67 Professional (Intel P67 Express) Motherboard Review

The peripheral slots are well laid out and appear to be aimed at the high-end gamer. After all, you have a single PCIe x1 slot above the primary PCIe x16 slot and then two more double spaced PCIe x16 slots below that. Unfortunately you are not going to get dual or three-way x16 here. If you run a single GPU in the primary slot you get full x16 there. With any other PCIe card in the other x16 mechanical slots this drops back to x8. If you try to run Three-way SLI or Crossfire you end up with dual x8 and one x4. At that point you have to wonder if it is worth the extra effort (to have three GPUs).

ASRock Fatal1ty P67 Professional (Intel P67 Express) Motherboard Review

Now that we have made it all the way around the board, we find a pair of board mounted power and reset switches, diagnostic LEDs, ten SATA ports (six SATA 3.0 and four SATA-II). The Cougar Point MCP is covered by a large heatsink which is topped with Fatal1ty's logo (just in case you forgot).

ASRock Fatal1ty P67 Professional (Intel P67 Express) Motherboard Review

The I/O ports on the back look fairly normal. There is one item that is not normal. If you look at the red USB ports and in particular the top one you will find something out of the ordinary, even if it looks mundane. This is the Fatal1ty mouse port; it is supposed to operate at a 1000MHz polling rate which should get you very smooth mouse movements. Well, that is if your mouse supports that. We will talk a little more about this port and how well it works later.

Sapphire Radeon HD 6990 4GB Video Card in AUSUM Mode
Introduction

Sapphire Radeon HD 6990 4GB Video Card in AUSUM Mode

You might've heard us mention this new "AUSUM" mode a bit in our recent Sapphire HD 6990 4GB. If you missed out reading our Sapphire HD 6990 Technical Preview, I'd highly recommend you check it out to see exactly what it does, even if you just jump to page 3 which covers "AUSUM" mode and the Dual BIOS switch.
Due to the fact we've already covered the Sapphire HD 6990 in quite a lot of detail, we'll just be getting straight into the specifications of the card when we flick that Dual BIOS switch to AUSUM mode.
If you can't be bothered reading the Technical Preview and you don't know exactly what AUSUM mode does, we'll quickly just cover how you switch it on and the clocks it carries when on along with any other features it brings. So with that all said and done, let's check out the GPU-Z information and exactly what we're dealing with.

AUSUM Mode
Enabling "AUSUM" mode is done by nothing more than a flick of the switch. Like the HD 6950 and HD 6970, we have that little switch behind the CrossFire connector(s) that switches between two different BIOS'.

Sapphire Radeon HD 6990 4GB Video Card in AUSUM Mode

The card ships with the switch in position 2 which carries the default 830MHz / 5000MHz QDR setup at 1.12v. Position 1 increases the core too 880MHz while also bumping the core voltage up to 1.175v.

Sapphire Radeon HD 6990 4GB Video Card in AUSUM Mode

To achieve this you simply just flick the switch over to position 1 when your machine is off. It's a little harder to do than the HD 6970 and HD 6950 as the shroud comes up and over the switch, making it near impossible to do with your finger. We just used a pen, though, and we were up and running at 880MHz / 5000MHz QDR in no time.

Sapphire Radeon HD 6990 4GB Video Card in AUSUM Mode

That's all there is to it. With a flick of a switch our core has been bumped up to 880MHz and what AMD is calling "AUSUM" mode is now enabled. What's AUSUM stand for? Antilles Unlocking Switch for Uber Mode.
