Lenovo Announces Next Gen Ultraportables: ThinkPad X220 Laptop, X220 Convertible Tablet for April
From Research Triangle Park, just outside of Raleigh, North Carolina, Lenovo announced today its next generation of ultraportable laptops: The ThinkPad X220 Notebook and the X220 Convertible Tablet PC. Lenovo has given the tech consumer the option of purchasing a super-transforming-ultraportable device with detachable keyboard and trusty pen- or instead, you know, a regular notebook. The X220 is not really that regular however, as it brings along a host of nifty features that will be sure to make 2010's Best-Selling Ultraportable Laptop a surefire success in 2011 (According to IDC Worlwide Quarterly PC Tracker, February 2011)

The spec sheets, which we've attached in the gallery at the end of the article, read almost the exact same- Lenovo has outdone their previous efforts in releasing an ultra ultra portable product in tandem with their notebook. The X220 Tablet is therefore quite remarkable in that it possesses almost the exact same external and internal hardware features as its less-transformable cousin, the main tradeoff being that the Tablet weighs in almost a pound heavier than its alternate (~3.88 lbs) with maximum 66% the battery life.
If you want the highlights of their similarities instead of trying to extrapolate them from the Data Sheets below, here's an all-star rundown:
-12.5" HD Displays
-720p HD Webcams
-Intelآ® Integrated HD Graphics
-Up to 320gb Hard Disk or 128gb Solid State Drive
-Ultrabase Multiburner Optical Drive
-Intelآ® Coreآ™ i7-2620M Processor (2.7GHz, 4MB L3 Cache)
-Windowsآ® 7
-Intelآ® Centrinoآ® Advanced-N + WiMAX 6250 (Kilmer Peak) 2x2 AGN WiMax/WiFi
From the Horse's Mouth:
"Put simply, The ThinkPad X Series has everything a modern road warrior needs without compromises - low weight, long battery life and high performance," said Dilip Bhatia, vice president, ThinkPad Marketing, Lenovo. "We've refined the mobile computing experience to make it more productive and enjoyable with features like smart PC technologies and enhanced video and voice calling."
Bhatia's eager analysis isn't too far off: both Lenovo models, with their preloaded Skype software in addition to the usual suite of Business applications like MS Office etc, seem like multimedia machines meant for the road, the tracks, and the air. With the HD Cameras and displays, not to mention the Tablet's Corning Gorilla Glass scratch-resistant surface, students and business people alike can travel and not have to fret over lack of time-killers and/or cosmetic damage. The keyboards have improved spill-resistance and wider drain holes If the name didn't already sound like a stealth fighter jet, the X220s have both passed 8 MIL-SPEC tests. For those of you keeping track at home, that is, in fact, shorthand for Military Specifications. That's what happens when you make computers in North Carolina, people. You make them tough.
I'll pause here for a moment to throw out a few catchphrases and plugs that I would like to see somewhere other than this article:
Lenovo: Putting the "Warrior" back into "Road Warrior"
and/or
Lenovo: We almost called it, "MadMaX220"
ThinkPad X220 Tablet: The touch screen that can resist a Gorilla, but not the other way around.
ThinkPad X220 Tablet: It holds your Pen like its 12.5" HD Display holds your attention.
Lenovo: GO TARHEELS!
(It's March in the USA and this press release came from North Carolina)
...
On the semi-permeable membrane that is Business / Studentom, these ThinkPads are touting some pretty useful UI features. I'm already a fan of the Instant Resume Function, an option that allows the user to rest/sleep soundly for up to 99 minutes knowing none of his or her connections have severed. It's like putting dishes that have large chunks of food on them into those new dishwashers: "Are you sure? That's really going to work?" But in this case, "I can actually sleep my device and re-open it over an hour later and that torrent is still downloading?" That function has all sorts of uses, business or pleasure. The Tablet has an option that notifies you if you try to move the tablet without the pen in the holder. Let's hope it's less annoying and far more rewarding than those seatbelt indicators that refuse to silence themselves. Ever (I know you feel me, New Hampshire).
Lenovo has also made sure to make both devices compatible with already-existing ThinkPad hardware, such as universal docking stations and batteries. On that note, Battery boosters can be added to either X220 to dramatically extend the already fairly impressive battery life (considering the size of the CPU): on the Tablet, 9 hours to 15 hours, and on the Notebook, from 16 hours to 24 hours. These things are definitely built with mobility in mind.
I'm certainly looking forward to getting to test one or both of these out, but the rest of you can look forward to their upcoming release in April. The laptop starts at $899, while the Tablet comes in at $1,199. For more information, feel free to visit Lenovo or find them on various social media sites (I'll give you a hint: type "Lenovo" into a search field. Anywhere).

Aussie Flood Appeal Dream System - The Winner!
Since January 26th till March 5th thanks to our fabulous community and friends, we managed to donate $6,289.77 AUD to the victims of the Queensland floods.

Today a check was mailed off to the Premier's Disaster Relief Appeal and as promised, you can see a scanned copy of the check above. The Queensland government has already thanked us for the donation as we alerted them about the check that will be mailed once we knew the final amount.

Now, the moment you have been waiting for... the winner of the Aussie Flood Appeal Dream System. A hardcore computer gaming system valued at almost five thousand US dollars. Of course none of this would have been possible without the support of the generous companies who provided parts for the Dream System. Thanks again goes out to Corsair, GIGABYTE, Sapphire, Thermaltake, Western Digital and AVADirect. You guys are the best!

Last night we prepared the 600+ raffle tickets and today we found our winner by means of drawing out a single ticket from our very special container - okay, it is just a standard plastic container with paper around it and some TweakTown stickers. We decided to video the drawing so everyone could see the winner being selected. You can watch that above.

So, now all is said and done, we would like to congratulate Andrew van Slageren as our winner of the Dream System. Andrew is an Australian and donated a total of $100 USD. His lucky number seven ticket was drawn as pictured above. Once we make contact with Andrew and get his shipping details, his brand new kick-ass Dream System will be sent out to him. That will most likely happen this week.
And to finish things off here, I want to thank EVERYONE who was involved with the Aussie Flood Appeal. I am sure that Queenslanders are thrilled about the effort and love that has gone into this from the people all around the world who donated, the company's who donated products and the other people like Shane Baxtor and my wife who assisted in a big way.

AMD Radeon HD 6990 launch - punches all other GPU's in the nuts
AMD has had the ride of a lifetime with the Radeon HD 5970, even today the dual-GPU 5-series card is still able to keep it's own against an onslaught of next-generation GPU technologies from not only themselves, but NVIDIA.

Enter, Radeon HD 6990. The GPU is a very power-hungry card crunching down on some serious 375W-TDP goodness but with its new vapor-chamber cooling system it also supports up to a get this, 450W of bench-pressing power! The card is mainly what was leaked a few weeks ago now, 2 x 1536 stream processors, 2 x 96 Texture Units, 2 x 32 ROPs, 830MHz core clock, 1.25GHz (5.0GHz data rate) GDDR5 memory, 2 x 256-bit memory bus, 2x2GB memory, and the best bit? A whopping 2 x 2.64B transitors... all packed neatly into a 40nm-process and with a price of $699.

Google Maps Navigation beta automatically routes you around traffic
Google have just announced the Google Maps Navigation (Beta) which now has the ability to automatically route you around traffic. With more than 35 million miles driven by Navigation users every day - this should save quite a few people, quite a lot of time.

There's nothing extra a Navigation user has to do, just enter in your destination and instead of Navigation automatically choosing the route that was fastest (without taking current traffic conditions into account), Navigation will now use Google's routing algorithms to current and historical traffic to select the fastest route from those alternates.
This not only saves time but also fuel, as well as the fact that you're making traffic better for everyone else as you're avoiding the traffic jams. Currently Google Maps Navigation for Android (with the updated real-time traffic conditions) is only available in North America and Europe at the moment.

WD acquires Hitachi GST for a cool $4.3 billion
Western Digital has said that it has entered into an agreement with Hitachi Global Storage Technologies (Hitachi GST) to acquire them for approximately $4.3 billion in cash and stock. WD said on Monday that the acquisition will produce a customer-focused storage company with "significant operating scale, strong global talent and the industry's broadest product lineup backed by a rich technology portfolio".

The acquisition will also strengthen WD's position in the enterprise market, where businesses and consumers are moving their data to cloud-based solutions. Included in the agreement, WD will pay parent company Hitachi Ltd, $3.5 billion in cash and an additional 25 million WD common shares worth $750 million ($30.01 per share) as of March 4, 2011.
With the deal, Hitachi now owns 10-percent of WD shares "outstanding after issuance of the shares", additionally, two Hitachi representatives will now join the WD board of directors at closing.
"The acquisition of Hitachi GST is a unique opportunity for WD to create further value for our customers, stockholders, employees, suppliers and the communities in which we operate," said John Coyne, president and chief executive officer of WD. "We believe this step will result in several key benefits-enhanced R&D capabilities, innovation and expansion of a rich product portfolio, comprehensive market coverage and scale that will enhance our cost structure and ability to compete in a dynamic marketplace."
One the acquisition is complete, it will leave four HDD manufacturers in the market. WD, Seagate, Samsung and Toshiba. Currently Western Digital is the industry's HDD leader - shipping an 52.2 million units in Q4 2010 alone. But this will all change with the tablet market expanding at unprecedented speeds, which could lead to more consolidation between HDD manufacturers.

Google's Face(book) Gets a Makeover: "Profiles" Review
Almost two years ago, Google launched a rather mundane attempt to compete with social media juggernaut Facebook. If you weren't reading about how detrimental social media is to your brain and your sense of morality (which you probably, and ironically found on your Twitter or Facebook news feeds), you may have caught this somewhat underwhelming SEO boost to your social network two Aprils ago.
This past Thursday, Google announced it had enhanced its Profiles section. I think we all remember what happened the last time Google created a social service that duplicated an existing one, but 8.5 million reminders of their mistake will hopefully avert anything similar this time.
Google users that decide to participate will notice that their profiles will update automatically as new features become available. For the time being, the page looks almost identical to a watered-down Facebook Profile page- but is that necessarily a bad thing? With so much noise in the social media ecosystem, it's almost refreshing to have a clean and simple profile page somewhere. Though Google Profiles integrates aspects of LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter, it does come with original features: a "Places I've Lived" Google Maps Interface, a "Bragging Rights" input field, and 10 personal tags for social SEO. All of the user's Picasa photos are of course readily available for posting, but there seems to be a 5-photo limit when posting on your actual profile.
Profiles is an adequate social media addition, but it is an addition nonetheless. Facebook clones and alleged "killers" have received lots of press in the past, but ~50 billion dollar company continues to be the White Whale of the internet. In a generation that is paradoxically obsessed with recluse-like privacy and nigh-fetishistic exhbitionism, it can't hurt, right?

NVIDIA pose with the Radeon HD 6990
It looks like NVIDIA are fans of the upcoming dual-GPU from AMD, the Radeon HD 6990. NVIDIA were approached at CeBit and were asked to pose in front of a camera with the Radeon HD 6990, which they agreed to, pearly whites included.

As the picture above shows, NVIDIA are in good spirits. This could mean a few things. They could be just smiling to get it out of the way, smiling because they know their product is better, or smiling in defeat. My guess is the NVIDIA's dual-GPU will be faster but at the use of much more power (400W+) where the HD 6990 should sit pretty at 300W and below.
This is just guess work, I'm the messenger, please don't shoot me.

Sapphire Radeon HD 6990 4GB Video Card Review
Introduction

I really thought it would be more of a race to the release of a Dual GPU card. We heard rumors that NVIDIA would have something at CeBIT, but that's come and gone and nothing was really announced or mentioned. It was similar for the AMD camp, but over that time we knew that the card was coming out within the second week of March.
Instead it seems the NVIDIA Dual GPU card has gone a little quiet and the AMD offering has arrived. It's quite possible that NVIDIA want to make sure they're offering a faster card than the AMD one and it's going to take this card to be released before they know exactly what kind of performance they're aiming for.
We're going to be getting into the performance side of things quite quickly here, because if you haven't already seen it, we did quite a large article that covers all the technical information regarding the new model. There we also included some pictures of the Sapphire card and spoke about some of the other extras that we're seeing from this series. If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend that you check it out here as it will give you some of the more technical information regarding the specifications and a much closer look at everything on the card.
Because we did this article, we're just going to look at some of our own pictures of the card and then we'll have a quick look at the specifications with GPU-Z and recap the clocks that are on offer.

Sapphire Radeon HD 6990 4GB Technical Run Down
Introduction

I wish we could offer you the performance numbers of the new HD 6990 4GB, but no thanks to my Australian location falling into the APAC region and the APAC region not always getting the same love as the European and North American ones, our HD 6990 4GB is running late.
The whole situation is made only worse by a public holiday here yesterday. That means while the card arriving a day beforehand would've caused an extremely busy day, at least it would have meant we would've had our performance numbers in time, since only the weak need sleep. The Sapphire HD 6990 4GB should be arriving literally any minute now and instead of having to type about the card as well as do all the testing and graphs, we thought we'd get that part out of the way first.
We've got all our slide decks from AMD and some images from Sapphire. We'll tell you all the stuff we normally would in a video card review outside of the performance of course. Because there's so much to cover as well, it means we can get the performance article to you even faster while making sure we can cover as much information about the new dual GPU beast from AMD.
The Package

Looking at the package, there's nothing really all that different to what we've seen before. Of course, the brand and model are very noticeable; so is the fact that Sapphire has chosen to let us know that it's a "Dual GPU Graphics Card".
Also on the front we can see a lot of the features like 4GB of GDDR5, DirectX 11, AMD HD3D, Display Port, High Speed HDMI, 7.1 HD Surround Sound and more. We can also see the new "Vision" labeling that AMD is going to start to push. The HD 6990 4GB falls within the "Black Vision" series which seems to be at the top of the tree.
As for the bundle; while we don't have a picture, we can tell you what's inside. Apart from the normal stuff like Driver CD, Manual, Sapphire sticker and CrossFire bridge, we've also got a bunch of adapters.

We've got three to be exact with two Mini Display Port to Single-Link DVI adapters being included. One is active while the other as passive. We've also got another Mini Display Port adapter with this one going to HDMI.
I assume we'll also see some form of power converters like we do from most companies, but we weren't able to confirm what exactly we would get. It's probably safe to assume that two Dual 6-Pin to 8-Pin PCI-E power connectors will be included. We'll confirm this in our performance article, though, when we take pictures of our own card.

Addonics External CipherChain Allows PC and Mac Users to Encrypt Just About any External eSATA Storage Device
Addonics External CipherChain Allows PC and Mac Users to Encrypt Just About any External eSATA Storage Device
SAN JOSE, CA, (March 8, 2011) - Addonics Technologies, (www.addonics.com) today announced the External CipherChain, a full disk hardware encryption product that lets users encrypt just about any external data storage device with eSATA or SATA connection - from sensitive data on external RAID storage devices to external hard drives, Solid State Drives (SSDs), and many popular flash media.
Built on a FIPS certified AES 256-bit crypto engine, the External CipherChain is as easy as using a key to open a door. The simple insertion of the Cipher Key activates the encryption and decryption of data on the fly with no noticeable performance degradation. There is no software or driver to install and no special training required. The External CipherChain is operating system independent.

Any external storage device with eSATA or SATA connection can be attached to the External CipherChain, which in turn connects to any host via an eSATA port. The External CipherChain can also connect to USB 3.0 / 2.0 ports on any computer with an optional Addonics adapter.
The compact size and rugged metal housing of the External CipherChain makes it extremely portable and easy to deploy in environments where applications require bullet proof data security. The External CipherChain operates at very low power and can be powered directly by the system using various Addonics optional cables.
The External CipherChain's 256-bit encryption is considered the highest level of encryption, secure enough to protect classified information designated as "Top Secret". The full disk encryption encrypts the boot sector, partition table and all the information in the drive. If the encrypted external drive is stolen, the drive will appear as a brand new drive with no trace of any data.
The External CipherChain can also be used as a drive sanitization tool for removing any sensitive data stored on hard drives or flash media.
The list price is $95.

OCZ Technology Expects That Fiscal Q4 Revenue Increased by Nearly 100% to Record $64M
OCZ Technology Expects That Fiscal Q4 Revenue Increased by Nearly 100% to Record $64M

OCZ Technology Group, Inc., a leading provider of high-performance solid-state drives (SSDs) for computing devices and systems, today announced it expects to report record revenue for its fiscal 2011 fourth quarter of approximately $64 million, an increase of nearly 100% from the $32.4 million reported in last year's fourth quarter. For the year ended February 28, 2011, revenues are expected to be approximately $189 million compared to $144 million in fiscal 2010.
In addition to the record quarterly and full year revenue expectations, the Company's SSD products for fiscal fourth quarter are expected to be approximately $58 million compared to $12.1 million during the same period last year, and $41.5 million in the Company's third quarter ending November 30, 2010. This represents approximate increases of 380% year over year and 40% sequentially. The expected Q4 SSD product mix of approximately 7% Consumer, 78% Server, and 15% Enterprise is generally consistent with prior quarters.
"We are pleased to have achieved record annual revenue while transitioning away from our historic focus on DRAM products, which comprised 50% of the Company's revenue in its fiscal 2010 but less than 20% in fiscal 2011. This successful transition was due to an anticipated 200% increase in SSD sales from fiscal 2010 to fiscal 2011," said Ryan Petersen, Chief Executive Officer of OCZ. "Moreover, we continue to see positive indicators of increased SSD demand on a global basis."
Additional commentary pertaining to the Company's results and any guidance for fiscal 2012 will be issued when the Company reports its full fourth quarter and fiscal year 2011 financial results, which is expected to be completed during April 2011.
The financial estimates set forth herein are unaudited and preliminary. They remain subject not only to management's final review, but also to audit by the Company's independent accounting firm.
