Battlefield 3 gameplay footage, prepare to be blown away
WOW. That's all you'll say when you see the video below. This is where the teaser footage came from, but it full gameplay footage. The one thing in this video that brings a tear to my eye? A guy gets shot and from the your point of view, you walk up and pick up him to drag him to safety... this is where a WASD graphic comes up, telling you to press "S" (which is obviously, reverse/backwards).
Compared to the disappointing Crysis 2 PC demo, this looks absolutely, hands-down, new-pair-of-jocks worthy of your money. The video shows off the insane character models and movement animation, environmental and lighting detail (smoke and debris fly when bullets hit walls). I've been really pushing Battlefield 3 to crazy levels of anticipation, but believe me, I'll be taking the day off work when this puppy comes out.

Crysis 2 to launch with DX9 only, DX11 to be included in a patch - Maximum Fail
Crytek and EA launched the Crysis 2 multiplayer demo yesterday and after playing it, I found myself quite under-enthused. It was okay graphically, but there are only a few drop down menus for graphics, no way near the customizability of the first. There's barely any destruction (which was a big feature of the first game) and no sound through my USB-powered Logitech G35's.
Motion blur is too annoying in the sequel, and it is only DirectX 9. News is leaking that the full game will ship with DirectX 9 only and DirectX 11 support will be added later through a patch. This is a very big blow as CEO Cevat Yerli has put his name on the line saying this will still be a huge hit on the PC and they have spent considerable time on PC making sure PC fans are not disappointed.
If this news is true, yet again, PC gamers are kicked in the balls. DirectX 9 on one of the biggest titles of the year, in 2011? It's not 2007 anymore, Crytek.

Microsoft's Rahul Sood says every PC industry exec should use a MacBook
Voodoo founder and ex-HP guru, Rahul Sood has loved controversy. Short of turning up to an event in an Egg ala Lady Gaga, he has always loved causing quite the stir. Today is no different, he expressed his pure love for Apple hardware by saying "Every executive in the PC industry should use an Apple notebook".
He later tweeted that the real meaning behind that comment was that they were of higher quality than those that come with Windows by default. It sounds like a death stare toward his current employer, Microsoft, but it seems like it is a dig at his previous employer, HP.
A series of private status updates points toward HP's unwillingness to compete at the high end of the laptop marketplace. With his message reading "We could have done it - just need a few years of patience, and investment in our tooling/process," continuing to say "We really could have done it. [...] ... especially with webOS, what a combination that would have been."

G.Skill show off Phoenix II, SATA 6Gbps SSD with 550MB/sec speeds
G.Skill has shown off their latest and greatest SSD at CeBit, the Phoenix II series. Phoenix II is based on the new SandForce SF-2000 series controller which pushes the Phoenix II to the wall and posts some of the highest transfer speeds for the chipset.
550MB/sec read, 500MB/sec write. G.Skill even went as far as validating these speeds using a session of ATTO disk benchmark to get their message across. Pictures above of the benchmark and a picture below of the actual SSD. Looks like it might be time for me to retire by G.Skill Falcon SSD...

Bigfoot Networks introduce Killer gaming WiFi adapter
The company behind the Killer line of gaming network gear has introduced their new Killer Wireless-N laptop network adapter. Bigfoot are making claims that the Wireless-N adapter offers transfer speeds of up to five times faster than competing WiFi adapters.
Bigfoot says this will give laptop gamers an advantage over opponents who don't have a comparable networking kit as it cuts down on latency and lag. Bigfoot Networks' CEO Michael Howse also said that other wireless connections that are usually unsuitable for other online activities that are sensitive to wireless packet loss such as VoiP and HD video streaming would benefit from these new Bigfoot products.
He went on to say "with our innovative networking technology and advanced 802.11n hardware, Killer Wireless-N adapters not only accelerate performance for online games, they also reduce stuttering, excessive buffering and other annoyances in video chat and on-demand entertainment services."
In order to achieve this level of performance, the card uses a number of clever range-enhancing 802.11n technologies to maximize the bandwidth available to the PC, which Bigfoot developed itself.

Crysis 2 multiplayer demo now available! Maximum awesome.
Crytek and EA have released the Crysis 2 multiplayer demo early, the PC demo gives you access to two multiplayer maps: Skyline and Pier 17. There's also two game modes from the full game included.
Team Instant Action which is a deathmatch style option where your main objective is to kill as many opponents in a certain amount of time. The other mode, Crash Site, which is similar to King of the Hill modes where you fight to control alien drop pods and rack up points in the process.

MSI smells a change in the wind, MSI WindPad 100A contains Tegra 2, Honeycomb
MSI have been teasing their 10-inch Android based tablet for a while now but have finally shown the device off at CeBit in the form of the WindPad 100A. It's set to be a dual-core Tegra 2 based unit that will include Honeycomb.
The hardware is identical to what was seen at CES, no pricing is out on it yet but they should be hitting shelves in a store near you by the second half of the year. MSI is among a dozen or so companies offering either Tegra 2-based tablets or Honeycomb-based tablets, but most people would agree, there can never, ever be enough competition.

NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 550 Ti listed at certain European e-tailers
NVIDIA's upcoming budget bonanza card the GeForce GTX 550 Ti has been spotted in several EU retail listings, this allows us a look at pricing and specs. The GTX550 is set to be a dual-slot card based on a 40nm GF116 GPU sporting 192 CUDA cores, 32 texture units with a GPU/shader clock of 900/1800MHz. It should also carry 1GB of GDDR5 memory with a 128-bit bus and an effective speed of 4100MHz, peak power is said to be rated at 110W.
Pricing should be €160 ($220) which should put the card against the overclocked GTX460s and the Radeon HD 6870. It should be noted that it falls just below the GTX560 Ti which has double the CUDA cores and memory interface.

March is building up to be quite the month for GPU releases with both NVIDIA and AMD releasing dual-GPU based cards to impress the world. Because of CeBIT, AMD and NVIDIA partners have had the opportunity to show off their enthusiast level cards.
Sapphire has stepped up to the plate by showing off a dual Cayman-based Radeon HD 6990. Judging from the above shot, we can see the GD 6990 uses dual 8-pin power and is capable of consuming 300W of power. On the shot below we can see that it will include four DisplayPort connectors and a single DVI connector. For extra monitor support, you'll require the soon to be released DisplayPort v1.2 splitter.
Not long until we get the usual "Can it play Crysis jokes". I've left them out because it's no longer 2007, also, Crysis 2 is a console port so it won't be so balls heavy on your system.

PlayStation 3 shipments to Europe being seized after LG wins injunction against Sony
It's a... SONY. It's a legal dispute. Sony are in deep water now as shipments of PlayStation 3's have been seized as LG won a preliminary injunction against Sony in a patent battle between the two companies. The ruling by the civil court of justice in the Hague means that all new PlayStation 3's have to be confiscated as they are imported into the UK and the rest of Europe for at least 10 days.
Tens of thousands of PS3's were seized by customs last week in the Netherlands, with more damage to Sony to come. If the injunction is extended it could mean PS3's vanishing off store shelves. Sony, which reportedly imports around 100, 000 consoles per week is frantically trying to get the ban lifted.
The legal battle between Sony and LG centres around a Blu-ray patent, LG claim that the PS3's infringe in a number of their patents relating to the playback of Blu-ray discs. If Sony is found to have infringed LG patents, Sony could be forced to compensate LG for every single PS3 it has sold around the world. Life would be very, very good for LG if this were to happen.

Valve to announce "big picture" mode
Valve are not a company afraid of change, they've dominated digital distribution in the past near-decade or so and now are expanding out into the lounge rooms of gamers worldwide. The announcement is not detail heavy, but it does give a few facts.
"Big picture" mode will provide "controller support and navigation designed for television interaction", it will also allow players to "enjoy Steam and their library of Steam games on more screens throughout the house." This probably means they've re-jigged the Steam interface to fit a large TV or projector setup and have it accessible via controller.
This could be a major win for Valve, it might stop the couch-gamer from going to console if they can hook up a single HDMI cable to their TV and use wireless controllers to boot.

Gmail accounts wiped for more than 100, 000 users
Google is currently investigating a problem with the e-mail portion of its company following complaints from some of their Gmail users saying that all of their messages, attachments and Google Chat logs have vanished.
Google issued a warning via it's App Status Dashboard saying they had been hard at work attempting to recover the lost data. "Google Mail service has already been restored for some users, and we expect a resolution for all users in the near future," the website reads. "Please note this time frame is an estimate and may change. This issue affects less than 0.08% of the Google Mail userbase. Google engineers are working to restore full access. Affected users may be temporarily unable to sign in while we repair their accounts."
Supposedly there is a bug which is completely resetting accounts, some users have said that when they logged in they would receive a welcome message as if they had just opened up their account. Considering Gmail has over 170 million users, a 100, 000 section of people is only 0.08-percent of their total user base.

iFixit rip apart the Apple MacBook Pro 2011 edition
iFixit are at it again, this time ripping apart the 2011 edition of Apple's MacBook Pro. Some facts about the dissection of it show that the RAM and HDD are still user-replaceable parts, which is a good thing. The battery inside is a 77.5 watt-hour battery with Apple's claims of 7 hours of use.
They did find a tonne of thermal paste on the CPU and GPU and noted that this may cause overheating issues in the future, so to anyone who purchases one of these new MBP's, this is something of an important note. Another surprising thing they found was one of the screws near the subwoofer enclosure had been stripped and there was also an unlocked ZIF socket for the IR sensor, tsk, tsk.
Other than that, it looks like another great thing of beauty. The guts of the MacBook Pro are glorious. If only I had the money to do this myself!

NVIDIA's dual-GPU GTX590 expected next month, AMD hiding in the shadows ready to pounce
Rumor has it that NVIDIA will be the first one out of the gate with a dual-GPU for 2011. Sources close to Taiwan-based Digitimes are saying that both AMD and NVIDIA are noticing a drop in demand for low-end discrete GPUs as IGPs and especially APUs are absorbing this segment.
The results of this? NVIDIA and AMD are looking to pump up hardware for the performance market given the shift in demand. Word is that NVIDIA is set to unveil the dual-GPU based Fermi card by the end of next month in the form of the GeForce GTX590. The GTX590 is looking to sport two GF110 cores with a total of 1024 CUDA cores, 3027MB of GDDR5 memory, dual 384-bit memory buses, 128 texture units and 96 ROPs - effectively, double the GTX580 specs.
While over in the red camp, AMD are patiently waiting and are rumored to have their Radeon HD6990 dual-GPU card ready to go and are going to let NVIDIA release first so that they don't have the time for last minute adjustments to tweak the GTX590's performance. This could mean that AMD might have the upper-hand once the dual-GPU battle begins.

FurMark 1.9.0 released, ready to cook bacon and eggs on your GPU
FurMark has reached version 1.9.0 and with it brings some new support for GPU's, a heavier workload on the GPU and also a dynamic background instead of a static image. This dynamic background is optional and can be turned off.
GPU support for FurMark 1.9.0 includes NVIDIA GeForce cards from the 6 series up to the current 500 series, AMD's Radeon HD 2000 series to the latest 6000-series, Intel's Sandy Bridge HD2000/3000, S3 Graphics Chrome 400, 500 and a few others. They've also made the benchmark process more streamlined by now offering two presents: Preset:1080 and Preset:720.
Choosing Preset:1080 gives, 1920x1080 fullscreen, no AA, Post FX disabled, dynamic background, burn-in enabled. While choosing Preset:720 offers the same options but a resolution of 1280x720.

Corsair HS1A Stereo Gaming Headset Review
Our first introduction to the HS1 Headset from Corsair was quite a pleasant one. We found it to be a sturdy, well built headset that offered great audio performance for what was a decent pricing point. However, Corsair has sensed the yearning for a non-USB version of the successful headset and has thus come out with a new one. Well, sort of...
You see, while the paint has indeed changed and the USB connection is now gone, below the surface this is in fact nearly the same product as the original HS1. And we do not have an issue with that, simply because as we have stated above, it was already a great sounding set of headphones.
So in affect, what we have here is a slimmed down 'light weight' version of the original HS1 - Minus all the fancy software working in the background, which we must add worked extremely well on the original when we tested it. Instead, this time around processing is going to be left solely in the hands of whatever sound card (device) happens to be in the users system.

Most notable amongst the technical specs is really the choice made by Corsair to stick with the large 50mm driver; as was the case with the previous HS1 which allowed for greater more open mid-range performance than smaller, more compact drivers used throughout by many competing products.
The memory foam is back again with the HS1A, which is a nice touch and provides for one of the most comfortable fits of any headset we have used. In fact, the only feeling that a headset is even being worm after several hours is at the very top of the headband, which could use a little more padding.
To control the volume of the headset, a small in-line volume control is included which features a small dial along with a button used to turn the Mic on and off. The plastic used for this control is also of a very high quality and is nice to hold. A spare set of ear pads is also included in the package which is a nice touch.
Unfortunately, our only real quibble about the design of this headset is the choice to use the smaller 1/8th connectors rather than the larger ¼" jack. Basically, it's clear Corsair has tried to make life simple when hooking this one up by using the most widely accepted method of connection. But put simply, we do not like connecting headphones using a stereo mini jack, period. Save those things for iPod users and the feeble in general. Not audio enthusiasts…we think.
- High End
Fairly well balanced overall without really pushing the upper limits too much. The large 50mm driver is not ideal for ultra high end reproduction, but it was certainly able to cope with the high end tones we were throwing down.
- Mid Range
An area of strength for the large driver; mid range frequencies sounded quite open and unrestricted at times, but also quite thin at other times, lacking decent depth and space with a tendency to waft over complex mid range sequences. This would often provide a 'highlights reel' rather than the nuanced mid range we would prefer.
- Low End
Fairly tight and controlled overall, although lacking some of the deep bass that we would like to hear, especially in a headset that is going to be used by gamers. We spent some time playing with different ear pads and tuning settings, but could not get the HS1A`s to produce any truly deep bass.
Having said that, though, for everyday use around the home the low end found within the HS1A is going to do your ears a favor over the long term, largely because the user fatigue is at such a low level.
Interestingly enough, and to our own surprise, we feel that the first HS1 headset we looked at (the USB version) is a better product that provides more impressive overall sound quality and arguably better functionality due to the software package.
However, as a standalone product the HS1A sounds really good in its own right and is the sort of headset you could use every day without an issue, in comfort, with very low fatigue even at full volume. Build quality is always great with Corsair and we would think that this headset would last for many moons being taken around from place to place.
Finally, coming in at $89.99 USD , the HS1A is good value again from Corsair and is in its own right another nicely implemented headset.

Antec KÃœHLER H2O 620 Liquid Cooling CPU Cooler Review
Introduction
Antec has been in the business for a long time. In fact, they are celebrating their silver anniversary. That's right, Antec brings twenty-five years of experience to the table! With this sort of history, they know a good idea when they see one, and of course they saw what all the rage is in all-in-one water cooling loops. Corsair and CoolIt have made good amounts of money off of this concept, and now Antec figures it is time for their share of the market. I assume this is where the call went over to Asetek from Antec.
Pairing up with Asetek, the same manufacturer of the Corsair H50 and H70 coolers, Antec takes ideas from both and made a couple of changes. With the new line of KÃœHLER coolers that hit the floor at CES, this was one that I know was in the plans at that time, but I can't recall if it was in the videos or not. Anyways, in the most basic sense, Antec took the head unit from the H70 and the radiator from the H50; got rid of the annoying tube covering, added a single fan, and are offering it up under their own label with the KÃœHLER H2O 620 moniker.
With many other versions of this exact idea, at last count still being produced, it makes this five. Both from Corsair have taken on almost a cult following, while the CoolIt offers better mounting; it seems like they fall in second. So that leaves Antec to make a push and see if there is some room for them to claim a stake in this market. Hopefully by the end of this review I will find something about the new Antec unit that will set it apart from the others we have already seen and tested.

GIGABYTE G1 Assassin (Intel X58 Express) Motherboard Preview
Introduction
Back during CES we were given the chance to see the launch of a very exciting product. This was the G1 Killer series. From the beginning of the event you could pretty much tell this was going to be something a little different from the norm. Whether it was the pretend military dress or the little leaks about the product that I had heard, I was really looking forward to see this one.
Now a month or so later, we actually have one of these boards in the lab. It is an impressive sight to see and one that we are happy to give you a little teaser on. This is the G1 Assassin, an X58 based monster with multiple USB 3.0 ports, SATA 3.0 ports, a true audio card by Creative built right onto the board and a Killer Nic to add to the fun.
So let's take a quick look at the new GIGABYTE G1 Assassin before we put this monster on the test bench.
Package and Contents
The G1 Assassin comes in a nice box that looks like an ammo can. Granted, a very flat ammo can made from cardboard. But the effect is still there and one that gives you the right impression. This is a first person shooter oriented motherboard.
The "back" of the ammo can that the G1 Assassin comes in has some more detailed information and a nice picture of the board.
Following the now almost annoying tradition of putting one box inside the other (and then another), we find first a camouflaged box then two inside that which contain what you are really looking for.
Inside the box we find someÂ… wellÂ…. nice stuff, and a decent layer of cheese as well. The nice items are the things like the three-way SLI bridge, the multiple Crossfire/SLI bridges, and the front break-out box complete with e-SATA, QuickBoost button and USB 3.0 ports.

OC-VRM
The GIGABYTE X58A-OC features a new VRM design called OC-VRM, which includes a combination of highly conductive POScaps, 50A rated MPFC (Max Power Ferrite Core) Chokes, and Driver-MOSFETs, which combined, are able to deliver higher current to the CPU, with better efficiency and lower temperature. OC-VRM also allows users to overclock the PWM frequency via an onboard switch, for real-time adjustment. When the CPU needs maximum power, users can raise the PWM frequency in order to deliver more current through this unique POScap and MPFC Choke design. In addition, GIGABYTE has specially chosen unobtrusive components and carefully designed their layout to make it easier and quicker than ever for extreme overclockers to insulate their boards.
OC-Touch
OC-Touch enables overclockers to quickly and easily get the best performance from their system. With onboard OC-Touch buttons, users are able to manually raise and lower the CPU ratio, change BCLK settings, and even change BCLK stepping to either 1MHz or 0.3MHz. These changes can be made at any time whether in the BIOS, DOS, or Windows and in real-time without the need for rebooting, so that users can quickly fine-tune to find their CPU's maximum frequency. The onboard 4G Ready button allows novice overclockers to automatically reach 4GHz, while advanced users can use it to get to 4GHz before continuing with OC-Touch to quickly find their CPU's best margin. Onboard voltage measurement modules are also included to help users to conveniently monitor component voltages.
OC-PEG
OC-PEG provides two onboard SATA power connectors for more stable PCIe power when using 3-way and 4-way graphics configurations. Each connector can get power from a different phase of the power supply, helping to provide a better, more stable graphics overclock. The independent power inputs for the PCIe slots helps to improve even single graphics card overclocking. For 4-way CrossFireX™, users must install OC-PEG to avoid over current in the 24pin ATX connector. The entire board also features POScaps, helping to simplify the insulation process so overclockers can quickly reach subzero readiness.
OC-Cool
OC-Cool features a new LED lit thermal design and 7x 4-pin Smart Fan connectors to allow overclockers to easily control system-wide temperature. The OC-Cool heatpipe maximizes system convection to expel hot air out through the IO panel and optimizes passive cooling. OC-Cool LED lighting on the North and South Bridges further adds to the X58A-OC's coolness.
OC-DualBIOS™
OC-DualBIOS™ features an onboard BIOS switcher and LED indicator, allowing users to select one BIOS for normal use, and another one for overclocking. It can also act as a backup BIOS in case of BIOS failure during overclocking. With two BIOSes, users are able to save up to 16 different overclocking profiles - a very useful feature when overclockers want to update to a new BIOS, but don't want to lose their original settings.
By being able to switch between 2 different BIOSes, OC-DualBIOS also allows users to test drive a new BIOS without having to update both BIOSes with the same update, helping to save time and unnecessary BIOS reflashes.

NVMHCI Work Group Releases Specification for PCI Express-based SSDs SANTA CLARA, Calif., March 1, 2011 - The NVM Express 1.0 specification that defines an optimized register interface, command set and feature set for PCI Express® (PCIe®)-based Solid-State Drives (SSDs) has been released today by the NVMHCI Work Group. The goal is to help enable the broad adoption of SSDs using the PCIe interface.
The significant advances in performance enabled by non-volatile memory-based storage technology, as embodied in PCI Express-based SSDs, has demanded the surrounding platform infrastructure evolve to keep pace and allow the system to realize the full potential of these devices. A primary goal of NVM Express is to provide a scalable interface that unlocks the potential of PCIe-based SSDs now and into the future. The interface efficiently supports multi-core architectures, ensuring thread(s) may run on each core with their own queue and interrupt without any locks required. For Enterprise-class solutions, there is support for end-to-end data protection, security and encryption capabilities, as well as robust error reporting and management capabilities.
The NVM Express specification offers numerous benefits as a standard interface through the interoperability it fosters. For example, each OS vendor may confidently write a driver that works for devices from multiple vendors. OEMs may procure devices from diverse suppliers that all implement a consistent feature set. Time to market may be reduced as validation times shrink with standard drivers and OEMs leverage the same test suites across devices.

Details of Discovery Revealed as Einstein@Home Project Releases New CUDA GPU-Optimized Version Delivering 20X Boost in Performance
SANTA CLARA, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 03/01/2011 -- A computing enthusiast in the U.K., equipped with an NVIDIA® CUDA®-enabled GPU, has been involved in the discovery of a new pulsar, as part of the worldwide "volunteer distributed-computing" project known as Einstein@Home.
The pulsar, originally discovered in July 2010, is identified as PSR J1952+2630. It measures about 15 kilometers in diameter and is located more than 30,000 light years from Earth, where it orbits a companion star that weighs about the same as the Sun. It is hoped that this discovery will enable scientists to learn more about the process of stellar evolution and how matter behaves at very high densities.
The Einstein@Home project uses spare computing power donated by hundreds of thousands of PC users all over the world to search data from gravitational wave detectors and radio telescopes. The newly released version of its software leverages NVIDIA CUDA-enabled GPUs to get a 20X boost in performance -- as a result, just 10% of the GPUs that connect to the project daily could deliver the equivalent processing power of all the contributing CPUs.
More than two million machines have been signed up to participate in Einstein@Home since its launch in 2005, and some 100,000 systems contact the servers each week. If the computational power generated by the project were counted as a single system, it would be ranked among the 20 fastest supercomputers in the world.
The creation of project director, Prof. Bruce Allen, who is also director of the Max Planck Institute of Gravitational Physics, in Hannover, Germany, Einstein@Home is considered by many to be one of the most important, and most efficient, scientific experiments in the world.
"The growing importance of GPUs in Einstein@Home has radio astronomers enormously excited. They are enabling us to analyze, in one month, data that would have taken conventional processors a year to work through," said Allen. "It's a dramatic change and eventually I could imagine that GPUs will contribute around 90% of the project's computational science with CPUs contributing the remainder."

Stockholm, Sweden, Hannover, Germany—March 1, 2011—Tobii Technology today unveiled the world's first laptop with integrated eye control. The prototype laptop has been developed in collaboration with computer manufacturer Lenovo and will be shown publicly for the first time at CeBIT in Hannover, March 1-5.
Lenovo, the world's fourth largest manufacturer of personal computers, has built the world's first eye-controlled laptop, using eye tracking technology from Tobii. The laptop is a fully functional conceptual prototype and an important breakthrough for Tobii in its mission to bring its eye tracking technology to serial production and consumer products.
Eye control - a truly natural interface
Most computer manufacturer's today endeavor to enhance their products by adding more and more natural interfaces. Using our eyes to point, select and scroll is completely intuitive and complements traditional control interfaces, such as the mouse and keyboard, in a very natural way.
"More than anything else, the Tobii laptop prototype is proof that our eye tracking technology is mature enough to be used in standard computer interfaces. To reach a state where the technology is part of the average computer, we need to make it smaller and cheaper. We believe that this can be realized in a couple of years by partnering with the right manufacturer," comments Henrik Eskilsson, CEO of Tobii Technology.

The first batch of eye-controlled laptops consists of 20 units split evenly between Tobii Technology and Lenovo for development and demo purposes.

The Hydro Series H60 brings remarkable new technologies to the CPU cooling market at an affordable price point. New features include:
• A low-profile, light-weight cooling unit that reduces clutter around the CPU
• A redesigned microchannel cold plate with a new fin design that dramatically increases the surface area of copper available for heat absorption
• A new split-flow manifold that delivers coolant directly to the center of the cold plate — the warmest area of the CPU — significantly improving cooling efficiency
• A custom-designed 120mm fan with very high static pressure, which allows for more cold air to be drawn through the radiator to vent heat from the cooling liquid
• Compatibility with the recently announced Corsair Link™ system for monitoring and control
