Netflix Cuts Streaming Video Quality for Canada, Aims to Avoid Usage Caps
I'm sure everyone is aware of the Internet bandwidth caps in Canada. The caps are set fairly low compared to data caps in other countries, which no doubt makes many Canadians pretty upset. Netflix launched in Canada a while back and if you stream a good amount of videos, odds are you are running right into that monthly cap real fast. Well, Netflix has heard the complaints and is now reducing streaming video quality to Canadian subscribers in the hope the monthly caps won't be breached by Netflix alone. Netflix says that fast Internet connections could go through 30-70GB of data a month while streaming 30 hours of video. Now, Netflix has reduced the quality enough to get that number to 9GB of data for the same 30 hours of streaming video.
Netflix is achieving this by reducing all Canadian subscribers to the "Good" quality which streams content at 625Kbps (0.3GB per hour) which works out to the 9GB a month. Even though Netflix admits the picture quality is lessened, it still feels customers will get a good experience at the "Good" preset. You can, of course, switch to "Better" (0.7GB an hour) and "Best" (1GB an hour for SD content, 2.3GB an hour for HD) at your own discretion should the lowest quality not be up to snuff for you. Netflix was welcomed to Canada by some ISPs dropping the data cap, like Rogers which dropped a lower-priced tier from 25GB to 15GB, but the video service has continued to operate in the Great White North regardless. So, for our Canadian members who stream through Netflix, what are your thoughts on this move?

Android Receives Firefox 4
Though just recently released to the market as a desktop, notebook, and netbook solution, Firefox 4 has now been released for the Android mobile Operating System. The newly released version comes with support for ten different languages along with bookmark, history, and tab syncing abilities via Firefox Sync with any desktop system. Sadly, there is no Flash support just as the previous release candidates for the browser, but the Mozilla team does claim that Firefox 4 is three times faster than the included browser that come with Android phones. Though there are not many sites providing reviews of this claim, Mozilla usually has aimed its goals pretty high concerning speed with its new releases, and it should come to no surprise if the statement is true. All together though, the release is coming very close to being debuted alongside the desktop counterpart and the Android version can be downloaded directly through the Android Market.
