Four Bulldozer CPUs exposed, clocks still unknown :: Posted by THRASHER2
More (or is it moar now?) info about AMD's FX series processors has reached the web, detailing some of the competition for Intel's Sandy Bridge offering, more specifically, four chips - two with eight cores (FX-8130P & FX-8110), one with six (FX-6110) and one with four (FX-4110).
All these CPUs are part of the Zambezi family and are expected to become available in late Q2 (June). The quartet will be manufactured by GlobalFoundries on 32nm SOI, and will work on AM3+ motherboards.
These are not Fusion products so they don't have integrated graphics but they do pack up to 8MB of L3 cache, 4/6/8MB of L2 cache (for the 4-/6-/8-core models), they have an integrated DDR3-1866 memory controller, support the Turbo Core technology, and come with an unlocked multiplier so as to allow some pretty easy overclocking.
The top of the tops FX-8130P features a 125W TDP, while the rest are rated at 95W. Unfortunately the CPUs' clocks haven't been mentioned but they will probably be around and over 3 GHz. Pricing is also MIA but that's more or less expected since we're still about three months away from their release. Still, AMD indicates Zambezi will be competitive (price-wise) to Intel's 2nd generation Core i5/i7 processors.

Kinect sells 10 million :: Posted by THRASHER2
Record breaking sales
Microsoft (through a posting in Aaron Greenbergآ’s Twitter feed) announced that Kinect has reached the milestone of 10 million units sold. The sales pace of Kinect has reached record settings, so much so that it is now recognized by Guinness World Records as the آ“Fastest Selling Consumer Electronic Deviceآ” of all time.
Microsoft was able to achieve this record with an average of 133,333 units per day during the first 60 days of release. (This pace beats both the iPhone and iPad in the first 60 days of release, as a point of comparison.) To already be at 10 million in sales when the device was only released on November 4th of 2010 is actually very surprising and quite an achievement. Sources whisper to us that these numbers have even beaten Microsoftآ’s own expectations for the sales pace of Kinect.
Microsoft recently announced about a month ago that they had achieved 8 million in sales, so it actually comes as a bit of a surprise that they have already made it to 10 million units sold. The sales has peaked developer interest in the device and word is that we can expect more Kinect titles to be unveiled at E3 this year, as more developers are anxious to take advantage of the positive momentum that Kinect is generating. So far, the number of released Kinect titles since launch has been a little light, but it is expected that the number of released titles will pick up between now and the end of the year.

Nvidia's GTX 590 comes on March 22nd :: Posted by THRASHER2
Dual GF110 GPUs
Since the dust has sort of settled around the launch of AMD's flagship dual-GPU HD 6990 card, we can now talk about NVidia's upcoming dual-GPU solution, the GTX 590. We have already seen the card up and running at Cebit but the precise specs aren't carved in stone so there was no talk regarding those. According to the latest rumours, Nvidia has chosen the March 22nd as the launch date.
The date doesn't come as a surprise as it is also the launch date for EA/Crytek's Crysis 2 game. Nvidia has been working tight with Crytek in order for this game to run smooth in its 3D enviroment. Unfortunately, the DirectX 9 debacle with Crysis 2 was a big let down that will be hopefully fixed, sooner or later. The latest rumours that we are hearing are that the GTX 590 features full fledged GF110 chips which means 1024 CUDA cores (512 per GPU), or simply two GTX 580 GPUs slapped together on a single PCB.
The last rumour that we heard was that the card has GTX 580 specs but at lower clock speeds in order to keep the TDP at reasonable level. The performance should up somewhere between GTX 570 and GTX 580, per GPU. The TDP might end up a bit higher than the HD 6990 as NVidia will probably still talk about "average TDP" and it will need two PCI-Express 8-pin power connectors. The card that we saw back at Cebit wasn't noisy, even with Nvidia's reference dual-slot cooler.
The most important piece of information is the price and unfortunately there hasn't been any talk regarding it. Best guess is that Nvidia will most certainly make the price according to the HD 6990 as that is simply a only advantage that you get when you launch the card after the competition.
Of course, Nvidia still hasn't officialy talked about the specs of the card so anything is possible. Hopefully a more solid info will appear as we draw closer to the March 22nd.

Free Points Generator Costs Microsoft :: Posted by THRASHER2
Over $1.2 Million lost in working codes
While you have seen those ads for sites that supposedly generate real Xbox LIVE codes for points and other stuff for free, apparently one of them was actually real this week.
Microsoft suffered a loss of $1.2 million dollars in Microsoft Points and other redeemable codes before Microsoft was able to close the site down. The rumor is that some hackers had figured out a way to create valid working redeemable codes by changing the number values of older used codes.
The site was apparently generating codes every time the page was refreshed, but it finally buckled under the extreme demand. The more hardcore hackers were apparently using a program that was able to generate codes for Microsoft Points, 48-hour Xbox Live Gold Trials, and Halo Reach add-ons, which we believe were Reach Avatar items.
Of course, Microsoft does not want to currently talk publicly about it, but rest assured that they are going to throw down all of the legal might they the can when they find those responsible. Someone will have to pay; just glad that it isnآ’t us.

AMD boss got $17.5 million last year :: Posted by THRASHER2
All that and told to go away
Chipmaker AMD give its former Chief Executive Derrick Meyer $17.5 million when he exited the outfit in 2010.
Investors were somewhat shocked in early January when AMD announced Meyer was stepping down immediately. The move was sparked because the Board was not convinced Meyer had a cohesive strategy for expanding its new semiconductor markets, including devices for tablet computers.
However it looks like leaving was a jolly good move. Meyer's total 2010 compensation was 22 per cent higher than a year ago at $5.5 million. This was because the vesting of Meyer's stock options and other items was accelerated due to his resignation.
In addition to this Meyer was given a $12 million separation payment. Thomas Seifert, AMD's chief financial officer and interim chief executive, only received total compensation of $3.4 million in 2010, nearly twice as much as his 2009 compensation.
Sheesh if AMD wants me to go away and never bother them I can do it for a lot less than Meyer charged.

HP to sell PC business :: Posted by THRASHER2
Rumour mill turns
The dark satanic rumour mill has manufactured a hell on earth yarn which claims that HP is about to flog its PC business. According to a Chinese-language Commercial Times the maker of expensive printer ink has been trying to palm off its PC business to Samsung Electronics.
Digitimes, which is normally the source of such strange rumours, got on the phone to some of its sources in the upstream component industry. The rumours have been going around Taiwan's IT market since the fourth quarter of 2010.
Apparently the deal was called off due to an unknown reason, and there has not been any follow up since then. What is believed happened was HP wanted to flog its PC arm but its partners some how stopped it.
Even Digitimes thinks that the possibility of HP selling its PC department is rather low. Not only did the PC give HP huge amounts of cash, the company is currently still the largest vendor in the global notebook market, as well as both the key markets Europe and the US.
Recently the HP CEO also recently saying the company will adopt webOS into PC products to challenge Apple. You cant do that if you have flogged your PC business, Digitimes pointed out sagely.

Tablet Atom Z670 cost $75 :: Posted by THRASHER2
Three times+ more than Tegra 2
We use Tegra 2 as a reference but the pricing of any Cortex A9 dual core chip should be quite similar. The Z670 just launched and it will cost whopping $75 at launch.
This is actually more expensive than any Atom CPU so far, but since its for tablets and has 5W TDP, tablet manufacturers donآ’t have much choice. The chip needs an SM35 chipset and it will run Windows 7, whereas MeeGo v1.2 support as well as support for both Gingerbread and Honeycomb Android 3.0 will come at a later date.
The Atom Z670 works at 1.5GHz, comes with 512KB cache and has one core and two threads. Since the average price of a dual core Cortex A9 is around 20 USD, this mean that a tablet manufacture needs to spend up to three times more to buy an Atom Z670.
We strongly believe that Intel needs to drop pricing in order to compete in this market.

EVGA shows its Geforce GTX 460 2Win :: Posted by THRASHER2
Dual GF104 card
While we're waiting for the GTX 590 dual GF110 card, EVGA has decided to announce its Geforce GTX 460 2Win, yet another dual GPU card. Based on EVGA's own design, the Geforce GTX 460 2Win features two GF104 (found on the GTX 460) GPUs and features 3D Vision support via single, dual GPU, card.
According to EVGA, this dual GPU beast is actually enough to beat Nvidia's current fastest card, the Geforce GTX 580. It has three DVI and one mini HDMI output which allows for 3D Vision Surround via three displays, although it can actually push four displays, two per each GPU.
The card runs at 700MHz for those GF104 GPUs, 1400MHz for 336 CUDA cores per GPU (for a total of 672). It features 2GB of GDDR5 memory (1GB per GPU) clocked at 3600MHz and paired up with a 2x256-bit memory interface.
The card needs two 8-pin PCI-Express power connectors and has a rather large dual-slot, triple fan cooler. Unfortunately, EVGA didn't announce the price or the availability date, but we guess that those will show up pretty soon.
