Salesforce.com buying social monitoring vendor Radian6
Salesforce.com plans to buy social media monitoring vendor Radian6, whose technology tracks conversations occurring on social sites like Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn, the company said Wednesday. Radian6's technology gives companies insights into what people are saying about their brands and products, as well as competitors. Its customers include Kodak, PepsiCo and greater than 50 percent of the Fortune 500, Salesforce.com said.

Terracotta upgrades Java job scheduler
Terracotta is unveiling on Tuesday version 2.0 of its Quartz Scheduler enterprise-level job scheduler for Java applications, featuring a Web-based GUI and the ability to direct jobs to specific machines. Offering a time-based execution framework, Quartz enables batch jobs and more to be scheduled within Java applications. Quartz has been commonly embedded in Java applications. In addition, the company is introducing the Quartz 2.0 open source version of the product, with an easier-to-understand API that is also in the commercial Quartz Scheduler product.

Multicore coding standards aim to ease programming
The Multicore Association is establishing specifications for a programming model that will reduce the complexity involved in writing software for multicore chips used in smartphones, tablets, and other embedded systems. The association is putting together a cohesive set of foundation APIs (application programming interfaces) to standardize communication, resource sharing, and virtualization spanning cores on the same or different chips, said Markus Levy, the group's president.

Overtis launches browser plugin for Web app control
A 3-year-old startup called Overtis launched a browser plug-in on Tuesday aimed at letting companies control what data employees can access through Web applications like Salesforce.com and Google Apps. The plugin, called the VigilancePro WAM (Web Application Manager), allows administrators to blank out certain tabs, hyperlinks, and buttons within a Web application. For example, an administrator could block access to Salesforce.com's contacts as well as the ability to print or use copy-and-paste depending on where the employee logs in, said Overtis CEO Ed Macnair.
