GIGABYTE's X58A-OC motherboard gets full introduction on video
Earlier on today we visited the GIGABYTE headquarters in Taipei and had a good old fashioned full look at its newest motherboard that will be officially launched next week at CeBIT in Germany. We are talking about the X58A-OC aka Hi Cookie's baby.

GIGABYTE has long wanted to produce a motherboard dedicated strictly to overclockers - that wait is now over. We are talking about a board that doesn't just overclock well, but one that cuts out the crap and nonsense and just gets down to the business of high-end overclocking.
The Taiwanese company has long been involved with overclockers and overclocking events around the world where it has managed to create a sizable market for itself. It has learnt much from the investment put into these events over time and even managed to pick up a famous Taiwanese extreme overclocker named "Hi Cookie". This guy is the brains behind the X58A-OC, an overclocking motherboard designed by a real overclocker. Logically it makes perfect sense, but how does it actually work out? From what we saw today, pretty well.

GIGABYTE's X58A-OC motherboard gets full introduction on video

There are five big main OC features on this motherboard that are highlighted in detail in the video above. Overclockable power phases for increased stability at extreme clock speeds, OC touch buttons for dead simple overclocking, voltage monitoring points to see exactly what is happening in terms of volts used in various areas of the motherboard, additional SATA power ports to provide additional PCI Express power and OC Dual BIOS for easily switching between BIOS' for simplified overclocking testing.
We'll have a full review of this later on and we'll try and get one into the hands of our resident extreme overclocker Deanzo, so he can see what it can really do. Suffice to say, seeing 5.2GHz achieved with air cooling in a matter of minutes was pretty darn impressive. GIGABYTE expects the X58A-OC to sell for around $280 USD in the United States (prices will vary from region to region) and it should go on sale midway through next month.

Remember Gran Turismo? Well, you won't after watching the below video. Shift 2: Unleashed has its eyes on the prize and judging by this video it looks like it's going to take the #1 position on the podium.

The trailer features some insane eye-candy, and even more insane levels of realism. You can see the depth the team as gone into to make Shift 2 Unleashed a near-realistic driving game. For those of you who don't own steering wheels, I'm pretty sure Logitech just saw me posting this news and have started production on some new steering wheels.

Elder Scrolls Skyrim trailer - ready to get your medieval on?
The trailer to Bethesda's latest Elder Scrolls game, Skyrim, has been released and boy does it look impressive. We finally get to see the game in action with it's brand-new, built from the ground up graphics engine.

Impressive, huh? The UI looks very slick with nothing to interfere with your fight for survival. It really increases the atmosphere (for me at least, and just in a video) as you're not constantly checking stats. The trailer shows off some impressive fighting (you versus a freakin' dragon!) and shows off some of the levels in which the graphics are fantastic.

HP refresh enterprise notebooks, show off 32-hour battery life capable of watching the LotR trilogy on a single charge
HP now have a notebook that is capable of watching the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy on a single charge. Color me impressed HP. The new notebooks feature new processors and a sturdier, more power efficient design. HP's latest offerings go by the names of EliteBook and ProBook and are constructed with HP's "Forge" framework that includes aluminum-allow hinges, titanium-allow display latches, a magnesium-reinforced ABS chassis, a bottom-case drain in case of spills and a HP "DisplaySafe" frame.

The EliteBook 8460p (14-inch) and 8560p (15.6-inch) seem to be the premium outings which feature the HP DuraCase that meets the MIL-STD 810G military standards and boast up to 32 hours of runtime with an HP BB09 Ultra Extended Life battery. The ProBook line features the same attributes while offering more options in configurations ranging from ultra-light to desktop replacement.
EliteBooks pricing start at $999 and can be built with Intel's Sandy Bridge i5/i7-based processors, a 1GB AMD Radeon HD 6470M discrete graphics chip, up to 16GB of RAM, mechanical or solid-state storage, as well as a choice between Windows 7, SUSE Linux Enterprise 11 or FreeDOS. The ProBooks on the other hand start from $579 and feature cheaper options like Intel's Core i3 or Celeron CPU's and Windows Vista.

Higher-end models include connectivity such as two USB3.0 ports, two USB2.0 ports (one eSATA combo), VGA and DisplayPort outputs, an ExpressCard 54 slot, a multi-card reader and various Wi-Fi/WWAN/Bluetooth options. Budget models sport less I/O but HP have included the important options. All of the enterprise models should be available in the US on March 15.

Apple release OS X 10.7 "Lion" to developers
Apple has let the Lion out of its den and out to developers around the world. Apple's OS X 10.7 "Lion" is Apple's next-gen personal computer operating system and a preview build has been released to developers, it is much different to the current Snow Leopard in that it merges bits of iOS into the new operating system.

Apple release OS X 10.7

Apple states this in their press release as "some of the best ideas from iPad and brings them back to the Mac." The results? 10.7 is built around the Mac OS X app store and multi-touch, a new Launchpad offers the ability for users to arrange and run apps similar to how they would on an iOS-based device. There's also a new feature called "Mission Control" which allows users to use the multi-touch input to preview and switch between apps that are currently running.
This is described by Apple as: "Mission Control is a powerful, entirely new feature that unifies Exposأ©آ®, Dashboard, Spaces, and full screen apps to give you a bird's eye view of every app and window running on your Mac. With a simple swipe, your desktop zooms out to display your open windows grouped by app, thumbnails of your full screen apps as well as your Dashboard, and allows you to instantly navigate anywhere with a click."
Apple is convinced that developers will love what they're doing with OS X and that they will embrace it with open arms as they have with iOS. Apple states "Developers are going to love Mission Control and Launchpad, and can now start adding great new Lion features like full screen, gestures, Versions and Auto Save to their own apps."

Apple MacBook Pro 2011 edition - intros Sandy Bridge, Thunderbolt
Apple has unleashed their 2011 edition MacBook Pro's and they're a beautiful sight. They sport Intel's new Sandy Bridge processors, AMD 6000 series mobile GPU's and they also include the first introduction of Intel's LightPeak tech, now called Thunderbolt.

Apple MacBook Pro 2011 edition - intros Sandy Bridge, Thunderbolt

The new MacBook Pro range comes in 3 different sizes, 13-inch, 15-inch and 17-inch. The 13-inch MBP features a dual-core i5 or i7 chip while the 15 and 17-inch models feature quad-core Sandy Bridge goodness. All models include Intel's integrated HD3000 graphics while the 15 and 17-inch feature switchable dedicated graphics in the form of AMD Radeon GPU's.
All models feature the new Thunderbolt technology which is capable of 10Gbps. Thunderbolt will be a winning feature in Apple's new lineup, but will require quick action from companies to release products that an make use of the insane new speeds Thunderbolt provide. Another new feature is FaceTime HD which can be used to make full-screen HD video calls from the MacBook Pro.

Apple MacBook Pro 2011 edition - intros Sandy Bridge, Thunderbolt

All new MBP's feature 4GB of memory by default and are all upgradeable to 8GB total. One disappointing bit is all models (from the 13-inch up to the 17-inch) feature only 5400rpm HDDs. Not a single 2011 edition MacBook Pro features an SSD which is very disappointing, especially from a company like Apple. Although you can upgrade the machines to SSD's, I would've liked to have seen the two high end models include SSD's by default (keeping in mind there are two 15-inch models, low and high end and then a 17-inch, the 2 latter models should've included SSD by default).
Price wise the the low-end 13-inch starts at $1199 with it's high-end counterpart at $1499, the low-end 15-inch starts at $1799 while the high-end 15-inch is $2199, on its lonesome the 17-inch starts at $2499.
At the end of the day, Apple has done it again. Re-spun their lineup to include new technology, added some new features and kept the same rough price. I'm sure it has caused quite the blood rush to most of the tech community while Apple fans are passed out on the floor in sheer Twilight-ecstasy. All I can say is, I want one and I want one now.

SandForce SF-2000 Series Client Launch

SandForce SF-2000 Series Client Launch

Introduction
There no doubt that the most exciting news we learned about at CES 2011 came from SandForce. As it sits now the slowest part of your PC is the storage system. Any leaps of performance in this area have large effects on the surrounding components. When you have a faster storage system you gain additional production and a better user experience since wait time is decreased.
Today's current crop of SSDs already allow for faster operating system boot times and near instant application load times. On a standard platter drive loading a large program like Photoshop can take 10 seconds or more, but with a newer SSD Photoshop loads before your finger is taken off the left click button. With load times that fast application developers can insert more features into their software, making the application more powerful.

SandForce SF-2000 Series Client Launch

SandForce's first run in the SSD controller market was the SF-1000 Series that consisted of the SF-1200 consumer controller and the SF-1500 enterprise controller. The two controllers were the same hardware, but differed by the options enabled in the internal programming. The consumer SF-1200 quickly gained market acceptance with several SSD manufacturers choosing to develop products based on the consumer design.
2010 was not only SandForce's break out year, but the year in which SandForce became an industry leader. In order to do that, SandForce needed to engineer a product that was innovative and offer a significant increase in performance to the competitions products, while doing so at a lower cost. That is exactly what SandForce managed to do.
Today SandForce is launching two new consumer products designed to build upon the success of the SF-1200. The SF-2200 will be the successor for the high end enthusiast market, and the new SF-2100 will occupy the quickly emerging mainstream SSD market.
We have a lot of information to share with you today, so let's get started.

Arctic Cooling Freezer 13 PRO CPU Cooler Review

Arctic Cooling Freezer 13 PRO CPU Cooler Review

Introduction
As with many things from days gone by, a few designs get overlooked and would have been a great product if minute changes would have been made on the original. Due to time constraints, or even the later development of an improvement idea, every once in a while a company will go back and rework the original into a much better revision for the second showing. It seems this is just one of those cases, so let's see what Arctic Cooling has up their sleeve.
I was not sent a sample of the original inception, which by Google's dating system on the reviews, it looks like the Freezer 13 came out at the end of last year. This version of the cooler is a bit different in both the shape of the fin body, and the design that gets stamped into each fin of the Freezer 13 versus the newer PRO release. The original design called for four 6mm diameter heat pipes that got surrounded by forty-five aluminum fins, and the lower set of 10 fins were smaller than the rest. On top of that, the Freezer 13 was only shipped with a 92mm fan to do all the work. All things considered, a 200W rating on that cooler is impressive to say the least.
Going back to square one, Arctic Cooling keeps the base, but this time adds bigger heat pipes. Also to aid in heat dissipation, the PRO version also has much more surface area in the larger fin array. The largest addition of the Freezer 13 PRO is a 120mm fan this time around to get more air flowing over the larger surface area. That isn't all, though, not only is this version bigger in looks and feel, but Arctic Cooling is trying out something I have yet to see on any cooler I have tested. If I have intrigued you with what you have heard thus far, I urge you to continue on and see what this new concept has in store for very high heat producing CPUs. In this case, up to 300 Watts of power!

JEDEC Announces Publication of Universal Flash Storage (UFS) Standard

JEDEC Announces Publication of Universal Flash Storage (UFS) Standard

JEDEC Solid State Technology Association, the global leader in the development of standards for the microelectronics industry, today announced the publication of its next-generation storage system standard, Universal Flash Storage (UFS). UFS is designed to be the most advanced specification for both embedded and removable flash memory-based storage in mobile devices such as smart phones and tablet computers.
The UFS standard represents an evolutionary progression of JEDEC standards in this field, and has been specifically tailored for mobile applications and computing systems requiring high performance and low power consumption. The initial data throughput for UFS will be 300 megabytes per second (MB/s), and the standard also supports command queuing features to raise random read/write speeds. JESD220 Universal Flash Storage may be downloaded free of charge from the JEDEC website here.
Gartner forecasts a 117% increase in mobile application downloads in 2011 vs 2010. This explosion of data-intensive applications for mobile devices is driving a need for enhanced storage solutions. UFS builds on the success of the popular JEDEC eآ•MMC standard and adopts and enhances mobile features from eآ•MMC in order to manage security, performance and power consumption to a high performance parallel architecture, offering mobile device makers a long term roadmap of standardized mobile flash devices that will meet their system requirements.
To achieve the highest performance and most power efficient data transport, UFS uses the leading industry interface standards to form its Interconnect Layer: MIPI Alliance's M-PHY and UniPro specifications. UniPro is a comprehensive specification meant to act as a universal chip-to-chip protocol, providing a common tunnel for other protocols. The M-PHY interface is designed as the primary physical interface (PHY layer) for the UniPro specification, and is a high speed serial interface targeting up to 2.9 gigabits per second (Gbps) per lane with up-scalability to 5.8 Gb/s per lane.
MIPI's M-PHY and UniPro specifications are optimized for mobile applications, and are designed from the ground up for efficient power management in mobile devices, including enabling efficient transitions between the active and power save modes. Combined with a low active power level and a near-zero idle power level, UFS offers the promise for significant reductions in device power consumption.
The UFS standard adopts the well-known SCSI Architecture Model and command protocols supporting multiple commands with command queuing features and enabling a multi-thread programming paradigm. This differs from conventional flash-based memory cards and embedded flash solutions which process one command at a time, limiting random read/write access performance.
In addition, a forthcoming complementary UFS Host Controller Interface (HCI) specification will allow system designers greater flexibility by simplifying the involvement of the host processor in the operation of the flash storage subsystem. The UFS HCI specification and the adoption of SCSI will provide a well-known software programming model and enable wider market adoption.
"The publication of UFS is an important milestone for JEDEC and the Industry, and represents countless hours of collaboration between memory manufacturers and principal consumer device and mobile OEMs," said Mian Quddus, Chairman of the JEDEC Board of Directors and the JC-64 Committee for Flash Memory Modules. He added, "Since UFS provides for both embedded and removable card formats the interface is the same for both, which simplifies controller design - an attractive feature for device designers."
Joel Huloux, Chairman of the MIPI Alliance Board of Directors, said: "MIPI is pleased to have collaborated with JEDEC on the inclusion of M-PHY and UniPro specifications as the interconnect layer for UFS. Together, these standards represent a revolutionary advancement for future mobile device performance."
In addition to UFS development work within JEDEC, some major participants have founded a new organization, the Universal Flash Storage Association (UFSA), to develop an ecosystem and support environment for UFS devices and host applications.
