Aussie Flood Appeal Dream System - An update on donations!
Well folks, we are about 16 days into the TweakTown Aussie Flood Appeal and I thought it was time that I give you all an update on the donations we have received so far.

At this very moment, the donations total $4,655.17 AUD - yes, some of you donated odd amounts like $11 and $16, but thanks all the same for the extra. It all counts! We have converted to Australian Dollars since that is what will be given.
This means we are only a little short of our minimum of $5,000 USD and still a long way short of our target of $10,000 USD. The first end date for the appeal is Feb 26, 2011, but as mentioned in the original news post, we may extend up to March 31st in one week intervals if required.
On behalf of the whole TweakTown team and all of the lovely sponsors involved, I would like to thank each and every one of you for donating so far. Most have been $10 or $20 donations, but we have seen many for $100 also. Each and every bit counts and thanks once again!
Please remember to tweet, post on Facebook, tell all your friends and scream from your balcony about the TweakTown Aussie Flood Appeal and let's try and hit our amazing target of $10,000 USD for all the people in Australia who have witnessed basically the worst Mother Nature can throw at them.
Much love!

X-Men: First Class trailer
The trailer for Matthew Vaughn's X-Men: First Class has hit the internet. The movie is described as a "Casino Royale-style prequel/reboot of the comic book series".

The story of First Class "charts the epic beginning of the X-Men saga, and reveals a secret history of famous global events." The trailer looks quite impressive, with a tonne of action scenes that I'm looking forward to seeing. I think it will at least be better than the third X-Men movie.

New phone camera sensors from Samsung hopes to bring better shots
While smartphones have taken over a lot of useful functions in our lives, it's no secret that most phone cameras stink. Unless you've got a steady hand and perfect lighting, getting a really good shot is nearly impossible without hours of setting tweaking. Samsung has heard the cries of blurrycam victims everywhere and are working on two new camera sensors that could let you say goodbye to your point and shoot forever.

The tech serving to help improve photo quality is back side illumination, which allows a ton more light to enter the sensor even in low light conditions. Generally, rule number one for better photos is get as much light as you can. Samsung's 8 megapixel sensor, labeled the S5K3H2, is capable of capturing 1080p video at 30 FPS, 720p video at 60 FPS, and VGA video at 120FPS. While VGA, or 640×480 resolution, may seem pointless in this setup Samsung's giving the ability to play back VGA video in slow motion for those truly epic YouTube fail videos. The big dog of the lineup is the 12 megapixel S5K3L1, which sports all of the above listed features but also includes pixel-correction to clean up photos and videos.
The timeframe for these sensors to hit manufacturer's hands for implementation is about six months, which means we'll probably be waiting until 2012 before we see these in any of our phones. If it works, point and shoot cameras may officially become a thing of the past.

Thermaltake's Level 10 GT officially hits the streets
Thermaltake's redefinition of their original Level 10 case has been in the works for a while now and even made an appearance at Tweaktown's party at CES. Now the Level 10 GT is available for you to make your very own as Thermaltake has announced that their newest case has hit the streets.

While the GT has similar styling to the original Level 10, it has been toned down just a touch without losing any cool factor. Boasting USB 3.0 connectivity, high end cable management, and dual 200mm cooling fans as well as dual radiator and high end video card combatibility the GT is as flexible as it is attractive. The best part is the $269 MSRP will give more customers a shot at this version that could not afford the higher price tag of the original Level 10.

Both Facebook and Google wanted to acquire Twitter, at $10 billion
Facebook and Google both had Twitter in their targets last year and even went as far to have talks with Twitter. Obviously all three companies have declined to comment on the news.

The meetings have let the flood gates open and rummaging through the wreckage is a golden nugget of info, Twitter was valued by Google and Facebook at between $8 billion and $10 billion. This is all according to sources quoted by The Wall Street Journal:
Executives at both Facebook Inc. and Google Inc., among other companies, have held low-level talks with those at Twitter Inc. in recent months to explore the prospect of an acquisition of the messaging service, according to people familiar with the matter. The talks have so far gone nowhere, these people say. But what's remarkable is the money that people familiar with the matter say frames the discussions with at least some potential suitors: an estimated valuation in the neighborhood of $8 billion to $10 billion. This for a company that, people familiar with the matter said, had 2010 revenue of $45 million—but lost money as it spent on hiring and data centers—and estimates its revenue this year at between $100 million and $110 million.
Not bad at all Twitter, not bad at all.

HTC to introduce an Android phone with a dedicated Facebook button
Facebook is really getting their name plastered all over the news today, I guess that's what you get with 500 million users. Well, HTC are supposedly looking at having an Android-powered device with a dedicated Facebook button.

This would allow an Android user to click the Facebook button, instead of the home button and then the Facebook icon (or widget). HTC is expected to introduce this new phone this month at the Mobile World Congress, so hold your breath until then. It sounds like a good idea, but really, just to save a few seconds? For me, I can click home, then Facebook and be in the app in less than a second - but I guess if you want to be cool and have a Facebook button on your phone...

RumorTT: iPhone Nano rumors surface once again
There's been a rumor of an iPhone Nano for quite a while now, but it has never come to fruition. Now Bloomberg is talking about Apple releasing a mini iPhone that would retail for $200 without being on a contract or including any subsidy.

Bloomberg has gone as far to say that "people who have been briefed on the plans" as their source of the information and claim that at least one person has seen the prototype (I'm guessing it wasn't left at a bar this time). The shrunken iPhone is supposedly one third smaller than the current model iPhone 4 and will include parts from the current model which helps Apple cut costs while it puts the more expensive parts in the next-gen iPhone 5.

Mophie juice pack air coming for Verizon iPhone 4
Mophie has been making cases for the iPhone since the smartphone launched years ago. The thing that the cases all share is an internal battery that allows the smartphone to run longer between charges. Most iPhone users will tell you that a case with a battery in it is important if you use the internet or play games a lot.

The juice pack case on the market right now will fit the AT&T iPhone 4, but not the Verizon version. This is thanks to the slightly lower controls on the right side of the smartphone. Mophie has announced that a new version of the juice pack air will land in March that will work for both of the iPhone 4 versions.
The case has a 1500mAh battery inside and can double the runtime of the iPhone 4. The first case will be black with silver accents, making it look very much like the iPhone with no case on. Later will come a glossy white version and a red version for those wanting a change. The iPhone can be charged and synced with the case installed using an included cable. The case will sell for $79.95.

Quick Review: OCZ Platinum XTE Series PC3-16000 4GB Kit

At CES we heard rumours that OCZ Technology was getting out of the game and a few days later it was confirmed. To be honest, it came as no surprise; not because they aren't good at memory, although they have indeed been quiet in the RAM department over the past 12 months. The thing is, though, they're just killing it in the SSD market.
Over here in Australia you see people buying the OCZ line-up of SSD drives constantly and it comes as no surprise. Imagine what they're going to be capable of when they concentrate 100% of the company on that segment instead of having a bit split at the moment.

Today we're looking at a Platinum XTE Series kit from OCZ and it's actually the first time we've seen a kit from this series. To get a bit more specific, we're dealing with a PC3-16000 or 2000MHz DDR 4GB kit that comes in with a 9-9-9-24-1T @ 1.65v setup.

Like most of the kits we've looked at recently, this one doesn't carry with it anything extra outside the modules themselves when it comes to the package, and for the most part it seems to help keep the cost down with the kit coming in at only 94.99 USD
Because of the divider option on our P67 Extreme6 ASRock board, 2000 MHz DDR is a little harder to get as we can go for either 1866MHz DDR or 2133MHz DDR. First we aimed for 2133MHz DDR and with no surprise we didn't have any joy. Instead we opted for 1866MHz and pushed the BCLK to 104.
With the settings at that we ended up with a memory clock of 1941MHz DDR which is just a little shy of the default 2000MHz DDR. You can see that CPU-Z validation here. Our intention is to get it to at least 2000MHz DDR, but since this was the first booted number we got we're using this as our starting point. Now to check out performance.
Under AIDA64 we ended up with Read / Write numbers of 20,991 MB/s / 18,660 MB/s, Copy speed of 23,194 MB/s and latency of 41.9ns. Looking at SiSoftware Sandra, our memory bandwidth numbers are 25,360 MB/s for Integer and 25,400 MB/s for Float.

Since our BCLK options are quite limited as we've mentioned a number of times and 105 BCLK didn't want to post, we thought we'd move to 2133MHz DDR and then work the BCLK backwards.
Since our lowest option is 95 on the BCLK, that would bring our memory down to 2026MHz DDR. Unfortunately we couldn't get it to boot, even when we loosened the timings a little.
At 1941MHz DDR which is just below the default MHz of the kit we don't see any surprises with strong performance at that speed. What it all comes down to, though, is that not just this kit, but 2000MHz memory in general isn't a good option for the P67 chipset due to the divider situation.

This kit is of course better suited to the P55 platform which doesn't have an issue with getting to 2000MHz with just dividers. The P67 platform might prefer the OCZ Gold Series kit we've got here that carries a default clock of 2133MHz DDR, so keep an eye out for that review soon.
The OCZ Platinum XTE Series PC3-16000 4GB kit isn't a bad kit, it's just not suited for the P67 platform unless you wanted to run it at lower speeds, which really we don't know why you would. However, if you're looking for something to throw in your P55 machine that doesn't cost much, this is a decent looking kit.

Super Flower Golden Green SF-800P14XE 800W Power Supply Review

Introduction
Most in the USA will not have heard of Super Flower before, but chances are that you have owned a power supply that was designed by or designed in conjunction with Super Flower. They are a huge OEM outside of the USA and, since their expansion in 2006, are becoming more prominent in the United States. Over the years they have manufactured and worked with numerous companies to produce power supplies such as TTGI, Kingwin, NZXT, and more.
The Super Flower PSU that we are taking a look at today is the SF-800P14XE. This is the 800W model in the Golden Green lineup. The Kingwin Lazer series and NZXT HALE-90 series are derivatives of the Golden Green series of power supplies, so you should expect performance to be similar to the NZXT HALE-90 850W PSU that we reviewed.
Specifications, Availability and Pricing

Super Flower's SF-800P14XE is capable of delivering 800W of power. It has a single 12V rail which provides 66A. The 3.3V and 5V rails are each rated for 24A and have a combined total wattage of 120W. With Active PFC, the SF-800P14XE will automatically operate between 115V and 240V.

The SF-800P14XE comes with a majority of the features that we look for in a PSU such as OCP, OVP, OPP, and SCP. Unfortunately it is lacking a couple of the higher end features. These are the Over-Temperature Protection and the 50C rating. All of the cables are sleeved very well and secured on both ends with both zip ties and heat shrink tubing.
While the Super Flower Golden Green doesn't appear to be directly available in the USA, it is available at numerous places overseas. The cheapest we could find it listed for was £ 82.17 without VAT which is about $131 USD. Super Flower Golden Green PSU's carry a 5-year warranty.

Thermaltake Launch Next-Gen Overclcking CPU Cooler Frio OCK
Thermaltake Launch Next-Gen Overclcking CPU Cooler Frio OCK
Continuing the leadership in high-end PC cooling solutions

Thermaltake, leading DIY thermal solutions brand, launch their newest and up to date most powerful CPU cooler, the Frio OCK. Continuing the legacy of the award winning original Frio cooler, the Frio OCK is yet once again setting new standards in the industry. With a whooping heat dissipation capacity of 240 W this powerful cooler is clearly leading the pack. Targeting particularly power users and ambitioned overlcockers, the Frio OCK comes with six 6 mm high-efficiency heatpipes that effectively transport heat from the base into two separate cooling towers. By adopting this dual-tower design the gap between both towers increases airflow and ventilation created by the dual fans.
Frio OCK's design approach captures and embodies currently prevailing computer game elements, in particular the shape and color scheme is resembling a firm and powerful bunker as inspired by the popular PC game StarCraft II. In doing so, Thermaltake is trying to bring virtual game visuals into every-day life, resembling a manifestation of the fictional within the real.
The dual-fan module is not only unique by its looks, but furthermore offers several practical usage advantages. Both fans are designed to work in tandem as a push-pull-combination where one fan pushes cold air over the tower fins, while the other fan on the opposite site pulls out hot air and then exhausts it through the cases back side. A convenient single fan speed control knob adjusts both fans in parallel to guarantee optimized airflow and maximize cooling efficiency. The 130 mm high pressure OC fans can be tuned between 1200 RPM for normal operation and up to 2100 RPM in OC mode and under mission critical circumstances when in 24/7 operation.
As usual with top-notch Thermaltake products, particular attention is paid to ease-of-use, convenience and an overall satisfying user experience. Therefore the Frio OCK supplies a universal installation kit which is meant to keep users future ready for current CPU sockets, including the recently launched Sandy Bridge 1156 sockets. It probably has never been easier to become a true Overclocking King in your own right.

JEDEC to Standardise Hybrid Memory Modules
JEDEC to Standardise Hybrid Memory Modules

JEDEC Solid State Technology Association, the global leader in standards development for the microelectronics industry, today announced that its JC-45 Committee for DRAM Modules intends to form a new Subcommittee focused on the standardisation of hybrid memory modules. To be chaired by PNY Technologies, Inc. and Cypress Semiconductor, the JC-45.6 Hybrid Modules Subcommittee will hold its first meeting in Munich, Germany on February 28, 2011.
Hybrid memory modules are comprised of different types of memory technologies and leverage some of the beneficial characteristics of each, operating as a system instead of as individual components. "I am optimistic about the potential benefits of hybrid modules," said Chris Socci, Chairman of the new JC-45.6 Subcommittee. "For example, modules with a DRAM interface that also incorporate the non-volatile characteristics of NAND flash could provide new options for data security in a variety of storage and backup systems in the event of power loss. This new family of modules has the potential to help entire segments of the market 'go green' by reducing the need for batteries, and may one day extend to all applications that demand memory."
John Kelly, JEDEC President, added, "The new hybrid modules activity in JC-45 is part of an ongoing effort within JEDEC to extend memory technologies to meet the industry's need for innovative solutions that will meet future demands. I am pleased to welcome all interested companies to participate in the development of open industry standards within JEDEC to help enable and grow the market for these types of modules."

Super Talent Secure USB Flash Drive for the Consumer
Super Talent Secure USB Flash Drive for the Consumer
Data Security Made Easy
San Jose, California - February 9th, 2011 - Super Talent Technology, a leading manufacturer of Flash storage solutions and DRAM memory modules, today announced the DataGuardian TM, a password protected USB flash drive that makes data security easy, affordable and usable.
By now almost everyone who owns a PC is familiar with USB flash drives. They are incredibly useful and have become an indispensible part of our computing environments. We all know that we should be using a secure solution, but the fact is security solutions are expensive, cumbersome and limit the usefulness of a flash drive. Most security solutions require the installation of a program, managing public/ private partitions and administrative rights. These limitations often create more problems then they solve and have dramatically slowed the adoption of secure USB devices.

Finally, there's a solution to keep your data safe without public and private partitions or even the need for software. Simply plug in the DataGuardian and an application is automatically launched from the drive's firmware (on-chip). Simply enter your password and you will have access to your data; unplug the drive and the drive is secure once again. The DataGuardian also blocks all Auto-run based malware attacks; a malware propagation technique that as become the #1 distribution method for recent virus attacks targeted at USB flash drives.
"We developed the DataGuardian based on input from our customers. Security is a basic need for portable data storage and so is the ability to use it anywhere. The challenge was to make it simple. The DataGuardian does just that"., CH Lee COO of SuperTalent.

SCOTTS VALLEY, Calif. - February 10, 2011 - Today Seagate (NASDAQ: STX) announced that its Seagate® TV Remote application has been approved and is now available for download from the iTunes Store®. This easy-to-use application can be found by searching for "Seagate" or "GoFlex" in the iTunes store from either your computer or from the app store on your iPad®, iPhone® or iPod Touch®. Use of the application requires installation of the latest GoFlex™ TV HD media player or FreeAgent Theater+™ HD media player firmware, which can be accessed and downloaded from the support site on www.seagate.com to either of the two HD media players as long as the device is located in the US¹.
The new Seagate® TV Remote application for your iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch has been approved and is now available for download from the iTunes store.
The new Seagate TV Remote app enables control of a GoFlex TV or FreeAgent Theater+ product from anywhere in the home using an iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch via Wi-Fi. The app interface resembles the existing media player's infrared remote controls, making it a familiar easy-to-use device. Additionally, because the app leverages the home Wi-Fi network, there is no need for line-of-sight between the HD media player and the controller, allowing it to be used anywhere within the home.

The new Seagate® TV Remote application for your iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch has been approved and is now available for download from the iTunes store.
An added benefit of the new app is that current owners of Seagate's media players will now be able to leverage the keyboard on their Apple® mobile device to enter text into search fields when using Internet services such as YouTube, Netflix and Pandora, simply by pressing an onscreen button. With the TV Remote app, people can now see a display of all the files stored on the external hard drives connected to GoFlex TV or FreeAgent Theater+ HD media players, which provides a convenient alternative way to view the files stored on the drive. The new TV Remote app also allows the navigation of photos stored on the Apple mobile device in order to send them over the network to the drive attached to either media player. The photos will be saved to the drive and automatically displayed on the TV in full resolution. The TV Remote app will also work with every Seagate media player on the network. The new Seagate app will automatically scan a Wi-Fi network for any available GoFlex TV or FreeAgent Theater+ HD media players.

GPU-Powered Science and Innovation Drive GPU Technology Conference 2011
GPU-Powered Science and Innovation Drive GPU Technology Conference 2011

Conference to Feature High-Performance Computing Symposium Co-Hosted by Los Alamos National Lab and NVIDIA
SANTA CLARA, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 02/10/2011 -- NVIDIA today announced that the third annual GPU Technology Conference (GTC) will return to San Jose's McEnery Convention Center from Oct. 11-14, 2011. In addition, Los Alamos National Laboratory will co-locate its Accelerated High Performance Computing (HPC) Symposium at the conference.
Last year's GTC offered more than 280 hours of content intended primarily for computational scientists, engineers and developers who want to better understand how the GPU is transforming scientific, visual and technical computing. Attendance at the 2010 event grew more than 50 percent, and further growth is anticipated this year. With increased global awareness surrounding supercomputing, and its importance to the advancement of science, visualization and innovation, this year's GTC promises to be an event not to be missed.

"GTC has moved to the top of the annual agenda for the scientific and technical GPU computing community," said Bill Dally, NVIDIA's chief scientist. "The addition of the Accelerated HPC Symposium in this event underscores the central importance of GPUs and parallel computing."
A leading U.S. national security research institution, Los Alamos National Laboratory has been hosting the Accelerated HPC Symposium as a stand-alone event with the goal of bringing together world leaders in supercomputing to share knowledge and help solve the world's most crucial technology challenges. This event will now take place during GTC 2011, and will be co-hosted by Los Alamos National Lab and NVIDIA.
Ben Bergen, research scientist at Los Alamos National Laboratory, said, "The growing success of GTC makes it a natural venue for co-hosting the Accelerated HPC Symposium. This event draws senior scientists from national research labs across the globe, and their interests in hardware and software development make for a perfect match with GTC."
"It's rare to attend a conference where there is such a broad a range of research disciplines represented," said Klaus Schulten, Swanlund Professor of Physics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. "It is testament to the dramatic effects the GPU is having on complex scientific problems that an event like this is possible."
Many of the sponsors and exhibitors from GTC 2011 have already secured their spot, including Microsoft, Supermicro, PNY, Adobe, Next IO, GE Intelligent Platforms, AMAX, Appro, The Portland Group, and Wolfram Research.
Further information on GTC 2011 is available at http://www.gputechconf.com. The site provides a sign-up for regular email updates, including when the call for submissions is opened.

Sharkoon Scorpio - ATX Case with Various Hard Drive Mounting Options
Sharkoon Scorpio - ATX Case with Various Hard Drive Mounting Options
Installation amongst others of 2.5 inch SSDs plus Fast Swap Mechanisms for 3.5" SATA Hard Drives | two types with varied fronts and air fixtures | MSRP 69.90 euros
Sharkoon has expanded their PC tower product line: The new ATX, called the "Scorpio", offers diverse and practical mounting options for hard drives of various formats.
With the Scorpio, Sharkoon presents their first tower in which SSDs as well as hard drives with 2.5 inch Form Factor can be used without any special adapter frames needing to be installed: Behind the mesh drive faceplates on the completely black SECC tower are four drive bays for suitable smaller data mediums. In addition, there is space for a total of six 3.5 inch drives. Two of the six 3.5 inch mounting bays are equipped with a Fast Swap Mechanism directly on the housing front which enables the easy installation of SATA hard drives: Installed on the backside of the mounting cage is a panel with two internal SATA ports. The user only needs to open the faceplate panel, remove one of the two secured mounting frames using the locking lever, screw the hard drive to the frame and re-secure into the bay. The tower panel provides a 4-pin power supply adapter and two unregulated fan connectors beside the two SATA connectors.

In addition to the hard drives, the Sharkoon Scorpio can include up to seven extension cards and up to five 5.25 inch drives. The drives can be secured by thumbscrews thanks to the laterally adjustable mounting rails.
For a clean cable management system within the black finished interior there are several cable bays and feed-throughs provided. The main board panel also has an opening to easily mount a CPU cooler. Through the rubber protected openings on the back of the tower an e-SATA cable and two water cooler hoses can be installed. The power supply sits on the bottom of the tower over the air intake with a removable dust filter and allows, depending on the preferred ventilation, the fan to be installed in either an upward or downward position. The top I/O panel provides an eSATA and two USB2.0 ports, headphones and microphone ports as well as the Power and Reset buttons. The tower measures 508 x 210 x 503 mm (L x W x H) and weighs around 7.25 grams.

Sharkoon offers the Scorpio on the market in two versions which differ in the fan and front panel design. The Sharkoon Scorpio 1000 comes with a high gloss plastic front frame. The mesh design of the drive panel is broken through by the preinstalled, blue illuminated 120mm LED fan which cools the upper removable hard drives. Another 120mm fan is installed on the backside. Optionally, a 200mm or two 120mm fans can be attached to the left panel using the provided mesh grill, plus two 120mm or two 140mm fans on the top.

The front edging of the Sharkoon Scorpio 2000 consists of matte finished plastic. For hard drive cooling a blue illuminated LED fan is also preinstalled, the difference between its counterpart the Scorpio 1000 is that it features an edge length of 140mm and is mounted behind the mesh drive covers. Additionally, an 80mm fan cools the SATA hard drive in the Fast-Swap-Bays. Also, the Scorpio 2000 provides a 120mm fan in the back and pre-drilled holes for a 200mm or two 120mm fans on the left side and two 120mm or two 140mm fans on the top.
End customers will find the Sharkoon Scorpio 1000 and the Sharkoon Scorpio 2000 available immediately for the suggested manufacturers retail price of 69.90 euros from authorized retailers.
