iPad market share drops to 75%
Strategy Analytics has said that the iPad has seen its tablet market share fall from almost 96 percent to 75 percent in the last few months, thanks to Android devices. Android tablets jumped to 21.6 percent while the rest of the share was taken by Windows and other tablet OS. While technically Android encompasses a large number of tablets released in 2010, most of the gains by the OS came from the Samsung Galaxy Tab, which shipped over 2 million tablets by the end of the year. Samsung did admit, however, that it believes hundreds of thousands of those shipped tablets still remain on retail shelves.

PC graphics shipments down in Q4, Intel loses share to AMD and Nvidia
Jon Peddie Research has published its estimates for graphics chip shipments in Q4 and they are not pretty, as due to a slower PC demand and the tablet expansion, PC and thus GPU sales were lower than expected. Shipments of GPUs and GPU-equipped CPUs in Q4 were of 113 million units, which represents a drop of 7.8% compared to the same period of 2009. The PC graphics crown remained in Intel's possession but the company actually lost market share - going down from 55.2% in Q3 to 52.5% in Q4. Intel's loss was to both AMD and Nvidia's gain though as the former reached 24.2% (23% in Q3) and the latter topped 22.5% (21%).

Hardware flaw found in Sandy Bridge chipset, Intel prepares replacement
Intel this morning warned of a serious bug with the Cougar Point chipset that would force it to delay desktop PCs using its Sandy Bridge processors. Those using the 6 series have a flaw that gradually degrades the performance of the SATA ports over time, eventually affecting the speed of hard drives and optical drives. The issue was in hardware and needed a reworking at the factory for a fix. Intel says that not all desktops were affected, as the flaw was limited to quad Core i5 and i7 chips. Notebooks use a different platform, Huron River, and shouldn't face the setback.

Alienware M17X10: A Close Encounter
This portable PC may not be all that portable - if you have a look at the charts, you’ll see that the monster we’re reviewing this time around weighs in at over five kilograms! This makes it clear from the ground up that we’re talking about a desktop replacement notebook, aimed at gamers. The desktop replacement category is intended for users that require portability from their PCs, whether it’s work at several places, data availability or simply gaming around, but don’t care much about the large size and weight that are a consequence of a strong system build or specific needs. For example, a notebook we’ve recently reviewed, ASUS’ NX90JQ (Reviews/Notebooks/ASUS-NX90JQ-A-New-Category-of-Infotainment-Notebook.html) with an 18” display, is about as portable as the old Sony TVs with Trinitron cathode tubes, but they still belong to the notebook category. Dell’s managed to make its Alienware brand synonymous with the best money can buy in the gaming department in recent years, and garnered quite a following among hardcore gamers that way. Well, after years of staring at their models at various fairs, we’ve finally had the chance to test one out for ourselves. The model that we’ve received is a 17” model, bearing the name M17X10.
