Verizon Wireless Friday claimed that the pre-order sales of its iPhone 4 yesterday set a record for a first-day launch of any Verizon phone. The record was set by 5 a.m. EST yesterday, just two hours after the sale started, Verizon said.

Egypt's tech chief forges on amid protests
As protests in Egypt continue, the head of the Egyptian government agency charged with developing the nation's tech sector, Yasser ElKady, has been heading into work, speaking on conference calls with tech firms, and planning for the future. "We were all in the office today," ElKady, the head of Egypt's Information Technology Industry Development Agency, said Thursday by telephone in his Cairo office. And those workers who couldn't get to the office could work via their homes, he said.

Lenovo halts shipment of PCs with faulty Intel chip sets
Lenovo on Thursday said it would stop shipments of its latest IdeaPad laptops and IdeaCentre desktops in the wake of Intel's revelation of a flaw in the Sandy Bridge chip-set design. The PC maker is also offering refunds or the option to replace motherboards at no cost for customers who have already bought PCs that contain Intel's latest Core i5 and i7 processors with the faulty chip sets.

Oracle drafts OpenJDK bylaws
Oracle has issued a set of draft bylaws that it hopes will guide the process of developing its preferred open source version of the Java programming language, the OpenJDK. The goal of the governance document is to encourage "members to act in an open, transparent, and meritocratic manner," the bylaws state. OpenJDK is the open-source implementation of the Java Platform, Standard Edition.

Cisco backs OpenStack cloud platform
Cisco Systems has thrown its weight behind OpenStack, the open-source cloud infrastructure platform developed jointly by NASA and managed service provider Rackspace Hosting. Thursday also marked the release of a new version of OpenStack, code-named Bexar, which adds better storage capabilities, a software image repository and support for Internet Protocol version 6, Rackspace said.
