Internet Piracy Boosts Sales, Study Concludes
Contrary to claims made by the entertainment industry, a new study found that internet piracy actually boosts DVD sales. The study was conducted by the Japanese Research Institute of Economy, Trade and Industry and focused on Anime DVDs but hey, we have to take the positive news when and where we can. "Estimated equations of 105 anime episodes show that (1) YouTube viewing does not negatively affect DVD rentals, and it appears to help raise DVD sales; and (2) although Winny file sharing negatively affects DVD rentals, it does not affect DVD sales," the researchers conclude. How Verizon Workers Are Like Charles Manson
I don't even know what this article is about, I'm just a sucker for a catchy headline. So whether you're imploring a workforce of 194,000 to delay buying an iPhone or a prison population of roughly the same size to eschew such devices altogether, you're pretty much looking at the dropped call to end all dropped calls. In other words: Your neighbor the Verizon technician and serial killer Charles Manson are the same guy ... at least in this sense. Look at this morning's headlines. Comments

Canada Minister Says Internet Billing Ruling Flawed
Don't let the politicians fool you into thinking this was their idea, the immense pressure you guys put on them is the reason behind this sudden change of heart. Thanks to Dave C. and Matt A. for the heads up! A Canadian regulatory ruling that effectively stops small Internet providers from offering unlimited downloading must be revised, Industry Minister Tony Clement said on the social networking site Twitter. "True. CRTC must go back to the drawing board," Clement wrote late Wednesday when asked whether he would overturn the decision if the regulator does not back down. Comments

Man Steals $12M In Farmville Money
You know times are hard when people are hacking into Farmville servers and stealing virtual cash. I thought about making a "virtual jail" or a sentenced to "hard labor in Farmville" joke here but going to real jail for stealing virtual money is funny enough on its own. Mitchell's story reads like a textbook bungled burglary. He hacks into a Zynga server, running popular online card game Zynga Poker, and steals 400 billion of the game's betting chips, which have an official worth of around $12 million. Comments

LSI WarpDrive SLP300 300GB PCI Express
If you have a spare $11,500 sitting around to spend on your next storage upgrade, I recommend you give this review of the WarpDrive SLP300 300GB PCI Express a look. In the eight years Legit Reviews has been in existence, the LSI 300GB WarpDrive PCI-E SSD is the most expensive piece of hardware we've received to review. With an $11,500 suggested retail price and a $7,500 street price tag at a few online retailers, this isn't an SSD even hardcore enthusiasts will be picking up. That's to be expected as the WarpDrive SLP-300 is intended for enterprise applications for which LSI makes a range of products. Comments

Reddit Surpasses 1 Billion Pageview Milestone
It would seem that congratulations are in order for the crew at Reddit, the site just cracked the 1B pageviews per month mark. The billion-pageview tally is only the latest benchmark of growth for the site, which skyrocketed 300 percent since last January's 250 million pageview count, and 20 percent since just last month. Reddit, once considered the little brother to the far-better-funded Digg.com, surpassed Digg in September 2010 after a redesign of the site caused a mass exodus of its users to flow Reddit's way. Apple Quote of the Day
Rupert Murdoch, during an interview about his new iPad only magazine, was basically complaining about the 30% share Apple takes and added this little zinger about Steve Jobs: Murdoch: I think this is the end of the laptop. Cavuto: You do? Murdoch: Here we have the man who invented the personal computer, then the laptop. He's now destroying them. That is an amazing life. Comments

Microsoft Awards Elevate America Community Initiative Grants
Microsoft Corp. today announced that it is awarding more than $5 million in cash and up to $10 million in software over the next two years to 12 nonprofits that offer technology skills training and job placement services to local communities in the United States. In today's technology-driven economy, finding a job without strong technology skills and during a tough economic downturn can be extremely difficult. To help ease this burden, through its Elevate America community initiative, Microsoft is partnering with nonprofit organizations that provide technology access and skills training in their local communities to help people find employment. The company is placing a special focus on underserved communities, including women and young workers (ages 18–25) who have greater barriers to employment and re-employment than the broader population. U.S. Calls Blitz on Alleged Pirated-Sports Sites
The U.S. government is cracking down on pirates that are rebroadcasting professional sporting events. The big networks say pirates are stealing their revenue and they have to pass that cost on to the consumer. Pirates say they rebroadcast live sports events on the web because the are "too expensive." Ugh, its a never ending circle that hoses the fans. "The illegal streaming of professional sporting events over the Internet deals a financial body blow to the leagues and broadcasters, who are forced to pass their losses off to fans by raising prices for tickets and pay-per-view events," said Preet Bharara, U.S. Attorney in Manhattan. The Obama administration has promised to crack down on copyright infringement and counterfeiting, and domain-name seizures appear to be the preferred method. Comments
