Nintendo taking pre-orders for 3DS directly
It's hard to believe with all the talk of the Nintendo 3DS that has been going on for months now that the portable console is still only in the pre-order stage. It hasn't been too long since the mere existence of the console was speculation and now we know the exact price and date that the machine will land. Amazon has previously been taking pre-orders for the 3DS for about $250.

Nintendo taking pre-orders for 3DS directly

Nintendo is now taking pre-orders as well directly from its site on the 3DS for the same price of $249.99. The console will ship on March 27 and you can pre-order yours in aqua blue or cosmo black colors. Both of the machines share the same features and same chance of making you feel sick when using the device in 3D.
If you live under a rock and have somehow missed all the talk of the 3DS, the main feature is that it can play games in 3D without needing glasses. It has a motion sensor and a gyro sensor for reacting to the tilt of the console as a control. It has the same two-screen layout the other DS consoles have used. It ships with a 2GB SD card and has a lot more features as well. The $250 price tag seems a bit high to me.

Inside the new Thermaltake headquarters with CEO Kenny Lin
Today Thermaltake opened its shiny new doors to customers, partners and press to celebrate the opening of their new Taipei Neihu based headquarters. We got an invite to go along and check out all three floors which are home to Thermaltake, Tt eSPORTS, LUXA2 and the Tt Apollo's Pro Gaming Team.

Inside the new Thermaltake headquarters with CEO Kenny Lin

Kenny Lin kicked things off with a short press conference discussing the new office and the reasons behind the investment - or so I think... it was all in Chinese. Judging by our visit today, Thermaltake has clearly invested a lot of money into its new office space, which is located in an expensive industrial area of Taipei that is home to big fish like NVIDIA, Foxconn and ECS. The new office is vibrant, follows the red and black theme colors of Thermaltake. No expenses have been spared with all the trimmings in place.

Included are such things as various Sony TV's hooked up with Nintendo Wii's for staff to take a break and get some prospective on things. Staff have various comfortable couches and bars located all around the offices to sit back, relax and discuss ideas and matters. Ceiling hung "moon air chairs" as I call them include a stunning view over Taipei and give staff another chance to get away from their typically mundane office chair. Every staff member got a Thermaltake eSPORTS keyboard and mouse and their office chairs even look comfortable, too.
All these make for a really modern, work inspiring and relaxing space to work, but there is a reason behind all of this new office space goodness. Thermaltake was in an old building previously, but the change to this new building is not just about having one of the top tech offices in Taipei, it is about a big overall change at Thermaltake and the new office helps reinforce that. Along with the new building comes a refreshes mentality including eight new core values as discussed by CEO Kenny Lin in the video above including: Logical Approach, Continuous Innovation, Global Thinking, Honesty & Integrity, Collective Wisdom, Learning Culture, Adding Value and Encouraging Initiative.
I would like to thank Kenny Lin for his time today showing us around his new offices. Sadly something happened to the audio for the last section of our tour and we had to cut out some of the video. We did include about two minutes of video without audio as I felt it was important that was still included. Sorry!

ChevromWP7 team says “We’re working towards a win-win scenario”
The ChevronMP7 team met with Microsoft this week to discuss the benefits of homebrew toward developers and consumers, after a juicy discussion ChevronMP7 developers Rafael Rivera, Chris Walsh, and Long Zheng have posted their conclusion of their meetings with Microsoft.

ChevromWP7 team says “We’re working towards a win-win scenario”

Most of the discussions are still wrapped in that great NDA bow, but they've stated that they are optimistic about the future of WP7 homebrew and have said that they are working with Microsoft on an interim solution to permit homebrew on WP7 devices.
The full quote of the results of the meeting are below:
After two full days of meetings with various members of the Windows Phone 7 team we couldn't wait to share with everyone the results of those discussions.
Although a large majority of the content presented by Microsoft is covered by a non-disclosure agreement (NDA), which we voluntarily agreed to, we can say we're genuinely excited by many of the forward-looking presentations. We can only hope these features come to fruition as soon as possible.
To address our goals of homebrew support on Windows Phone 7, we discussed why we think it's important, the groups of people it affects, its direct and indirect benefits and how to manage any risks.
With that in mind, we will work with Microsoft towards long-term solutions that support mutual goals of broadening access to the platform while protecting intellectual property and ensuring platform security.
In the meantime, a forthcoming Windows Phone 7 update will fix a bug that the ChevronWP7 unlocker tool took advantage of; the tool will cease to work thereafter.
To fill this short-term gap, we're collaborating with Microsoft on an interim solution that will continue to support homebrew developments after the update. We will share details of this when it has been finalized.
In summary, we appreciate Microsoft's outreach, genuine interest and involvement in this matter and we hope the community can understand we're working towards a win-win scenario.

Matrix 4 and 5 coming soon?
Update; I've been informed this is a fake, sad face ahoy.
Obviously the rabbit hole goes deeper than Morpheus first said in the original Matrix, with news coming out that Keanu Reeves has met with the Wachowski Brothers (well, one brother and now a sister) over Christmas.

Matrix 4 and 5 coming soon?

Keanu Reeves was at the London School of Performing Arts University where he was the guest of honor, he was promoting his new film Henry's Crime and then answered a bunch of questions, where he says he met the Wachowski's over Christmas and they had worked on a two picture script that would provide a return to the world of The Matrix as Neo.
He also said the Bros have met with James Cameron to discuss the pros and cons of 3D and are looking to deliver something that has never been seen (again). Keanu said that he still has an obligation to fans to deliver a movie worthy of "The Matrix" title and he swears this time that the treatment will truly revolutionize the action genre like the first movie did.
Oh boy! ! !
Fake news, confirmed.

DIY DSLR anti-blur hack is cool and looks complex
Generally, when I shoot pics with my DSRL I don't have a problem with blur if I am outside where it is bright thanks to a really fast shutter. Inside or when I try to shoot pics in the dark things are different though. I end up with blur almost every time thanks to the fact that my D80 lacks any anti-blur tech inside.

DIY DSLR anti-blur hack is cool and looks complex

I guess I could buy a lens that has the technology in it, but I rarely need it. If you are like me and don't want to spend the money, it costs to get a lens to reduce blur in your pics and you have a DIY penchant this new hack at Hack A Day might be just what you need. The builder took an Arduino board and connected it with a Bluetooth modem, 3-axis accelerometer, gyroscope, and a camera trigger.
The smaller camera you see on the side isn't a part of the final rig and is there to help tweak the algorithm that removes blur. The final product controls the camera shutter and supposedly does a good job of removing image blur. I think I'd rather just fight the blur or buy a lens that have to use that thing, but it is really cool.

Active Media Products launches new 1.8-inch upgrade SSDs for MacBook Air and more
There are many small notebooks out there that use tiny 1.8-inch PATA HDDs inside that owners might like to update. The catch is that the small HDDs that the machines use don't have a ton of upgrade options available. Active Media Products has added a new upgrade path for owners of the machines that is a line of fast SSDs.

Silicon Power ups storage capacity in 600x CF card line
The brand of DSLR camera you purchase has a lot to do with the sort of storage format that the camera needs. The closer you get to a true professional DSLR the more likely you are to need pro storage rather than the more consumer focused SD cards. Silicon Power has unveiled a new larger capacity CF card for DSLR shooters that has lots of speed and storage space.

Silicon Power ups storage capacity in 600x CF card line

The card is called the Silicon Power 600x compact Flash Card and the thing has been around in capacities of 8GB to 32GB already. The latest update to the line brings a new 64GB capacity to the family. The memory card promises file transfers of up to 90MB/s. The cards use the ATA interface and consume little power when in use.

Facebook lands $1.5 billion in new investments
Facebook started as the new guy in the social networking scene a few years ago when MySpace was dominating the market in the US. Facebook had more cool to it than MySpace though and users started flocking to Facebook and away from MySpace. Today MySpace is nearly at an end.

Facebook lands $1.5 billion in new investments

While MySpace sinks, Facebook is riding the tide of success to new heights all the time. The latest round of financing for Facebook has happened over the last month or so. The interesting part to me is that Facebook didn't seek more money; Goldman Sacs approached Facebook with an offer for investing in the company.
Over the last several weeks, Facebook has taken in $500 million of new investment and an additional $1 billion in new investment from overseas. Facebook could have taken as much as $1.5 billion from the overseas investors and actually turned some of the money offered down. Facebook reports it has no plans to use the money right now and will use it as cash reserves. Facebook is valued at $50 billion.

GIGABYTE GeForce GTX 560 Ti 1GB SOC Video Card
Introduction

GIGABYTE GeForce GTX 560 Ti 1GB SOC Video Card

You throw the x60 name on a new video card these days and you're going to expect big things from it. Let's be honest, I was going to say that the GTX 460 kicked ass, but we shouldn't be using past tense. Instead, the GTX 460 kicks ass.
It offered great performance from the second we saw the model. Sure, lots of cards offer great performance; look at the GTX 580, but that model carries with it quite a large price tag, like most high end cards do. The GTX 460 broke the mold, especially for NVIDIA, a company we tend to expect to pay more for when compared to its AMD competition who seems to focus strongly on value.
We saw it all from day one as well with the model; strong out of the box overclocks, awesome custom cooling designs and heaps of potential when it came to overclocking even further. When we got word that the GTX 560 Ti was coming, the first thing I thought was; is the card going to be as much of a game changer as the GTX 460 was?
Before I even tested it, though, I knew it wouldn't be. It couldn't be. While the GTX 460 was being looked at against the GTX 470 and GTX 480 which were plagued with problems in the sense of heat and noise, the GTX 570 and GTX 580 don't have that problem. They're significantly cooler running and quieter than their predecessors.
The GTX 560 Ti ultimately has two jobs to do; one is to help make sure that NVIDIA offer a broad range of pricing options for people wanting to get into the GTX 500 series, while the other is to lay the smack down on AMD. Priced under $250, the model clearly sits well with the GTX 570 costing $100 more, and the GTX 580 costing another $150 more on top of the GTX 570 for a price tag that's pretty much double of the GTX 560.
So there's only one more question; can it lay the smack down on AMD? Well, before we tell you that, let's check out the card itself that GIGABYTE is offering us. Once that's done we'll get into the fun stuff that we call benchmarking.
Because we got the card nice and early from GIGABYTE, we didn't get a package, so instead we'll be just getting stuck straight into the card itself on the next page. Quickly, though, we do know what's inside the package. We've got a mini HDMI to HDMI cable, DVI to VGA adapter and two 6-Pin PCI-E power connectors. We would assume the normal line-up of paperwork and the standard driver CD is there as well.

ASUS P8P67 WS Revolution (Intel P67 Express) Motherboard

ASUS P8P67 WS Revolution (Intel P67 Express) Motherboard

Introduction
At CES this year we had the chance to talk to ASUS about some of their visions for the coming year as well as specifically about the P67 and Sandy Bridge. We were not surprised to hear that ASUS was thinking a little ahead of what we had heard from the other guys in terms of positioning their products.
Although we have seen other companies streamline their feature sets across an entire product line, what we have not seen is pushing boards in a pre-emptive way to ensure great overclocking. This is what ASUS has done; as we told you before, they are designing all of their new boards to handle a much higher power and thermal envelope from the beginning. This means that you should be able to get some pretty impressive clocks out of even your basic boards.
With that in mind, we are cracking open the box on one of our favourite lines of ASUS motherboards. This is the WS line; we have the P8P67 WS Revolution sitting on the test bench all ready to go. With its support for Three-Way SLI and Crossfire, Intel LAN chip and multiple USB 3.0 and SATA 3.0 ports, it is looking to be a nice new board. So what can this $269.99 motherboard do for you? - Let's find out, shall we?

Scythe Announces Setsugen 2 VGA Cooler
Scythe Announces Setsugen 2 VGA Cooler
The Japanese cooler manufacturer Scythe presents a new graphics card cooler called Setsugen 2. The successor of the popular and award-winning Setsugen 1, improving the well-known basic design and is highly compatible with current graphics cards. Four copper-heatpipes distribute heat generated by the graphics card over the entire surface of the cooler. The direct heat dissipation is achieved by a fanned arrangment of the heatpipes. Thanks to this well-balanced heat distribution, the air flow of the built-in 120 mm Slip Stream Slim fan is used with maximum efficiency despite the small dimensions of the heat sink. Low height of only 33 mm allows easy trouble-free SLI / Crossfire mode.
For the active cooling a Slip Stream 120 mm Slim fan with only 12 mm height is used, which allows a speed control range of 800 (± 20%) to 2,000 rpm (± 10%). Thus an air flow of 19.40 to 45.47 CFM / 32-76 m³/hr is generated. Fan speed is controlled by a rotary potentiometer which is easily accessible via a PCI slot bracket on the back of the PC. This allows the user to find the ideal compromise between performance and noise level (from 19.53 to 33.67 dBA) for his system.

Scythe Announces Setsugen 2 VGA Cooler

For Setsugen 2 a revised version of the U.M.C.P. (Universal Multi-Platform Compatibility Plate) mounting mechanism is used. Two different mounting-plates in connection with the universal backplate provide not only simple and easy bolt assembly, but also an almost across the board compatibility with standard ATI® and NVIDIA® graphics cards. The compatibly list contains among others the ATI® Radeon® HD 5750 / HD 5770 / HD 5830 / HD 5850 / HD 5870 / HD 6950 / HD 6970 and Nvidia® GeForce® GTX 460 / GTX 465 / GTX 470 graphic crads. (See specifications for full compatibility list) Included with the Setsugen 2 graphics card cooler are several aluminum memory heat sinks and special heat sink for VRAM and voltage regulators. Original Scythe thermal compound and a PCI-Express extension cable are supplied as well.

Hitachi GST Raises the ‘Reliability’ Bar for 7,200 RPM, 3.5-Inch Enterprise Drives
Hitachi GST Raises the 'Reliability' Bar for 7,200 RPM, 3.5-Inch Enterprise Drives
Committed to the growing market for cost-effective, capacity-optimized drives, Hitachi Global Storage Technologies (Hitachi GST) today introduced its new enterprise-class, 3.5-inch, 3TB Ultrastar 7K3000 drive family - the world's first and only 7,200 RPM drive family rated at 2.0 million hours MTBF and backed by a five-year limited warranty. The new Ultrastar 7K3000 drive family represents the fifth-generation of Hitachi's five-platter mechanical design, which has been stringently designed, tested and field proven for quality and reliability by global server and storage OEMs, as well as the most well known Internet giants worldwide.
With millions of five-platter Ultrastar drives shipped over the last three years, Hitachi's field reliability data shows an unprecedented AFR below 0.40 percent, exceeding customer and industry AFR quality specifications for a 7,200 RPM drive. By increasing the MTBF specification to 2.0 million hours, with an AFR 40 percent lower than drives rated 1.2 million hours MTBF, Hitachi enables data center managers to expect reduced failures, improved up-time and lowered TCO when using a large population of Ultrastar 7K3000 hard drives over a period of time.

Hitachi GST Raises the ‘Reliability’ Bar for 7,200 RPM, 3.5-Inch Enterprise Drives

"From early-stage research to design and development to component selection and manufacturing, we have multi-layer processes in place to ensure that our customers receive the highest quality products throughout the entire life of the hard drive program," said Brendan Collins, vice president of product marketing at Hitachi GST. "Raising our MTBF to 2.0 million hours on our new Ultrastar 7K3000 family reinforces this quality commitment. Our new Ultrastar drives will continue to play an important and growing role in data centers that require 24x7 availability for cloud storage, massive scale out (MSO) data farms, data warehousing, disk-to-disk backup, RAID arrays and more."
"The need for greater storage will continue to expand in multiple directions and dimensions, and 3.5-inch enterprise-class hard-disk drives (HDDs) will play a crucial role in enabling that expansion," said John Monroe, a research vice president in the Data Center Systems group at Gartner. "Computers come and go, but data remains, and it grows, in unpredictable ways. In the future, if we do happen to see less local storage 'in hand' or 'on the desk,' this will simply mean that even more storage will be required elsewhere, in the network cloud. Highly reliable, cost-effective, high-capacity HDDs have been and, in concert and conjunction with solid-state drives (SSDs) and higher-performance HDDs, will continue to be key enablers of the widespread proliferation of information, entertainment and communication technologies."
Keeping TCO to a minimum
With the industry's highest MTBF on a 7,200 RPM HDD, and stringent quality standards in place, the Hitachi Ultrastar 7K3000 family delivers by reducing system downtime, eliminating service calls and keeping TCO to a minimum. With explosive petabyte (PB) growth requirements, IT managers can also leverage the new 3TB Ultrastar 7K3000 drive's low power, high capacity and lower cost per gigabyte to optimize floor space and improve power-density requirements, ultimately helping to take pressure off of shrinking data centers and budgets.
Providing the best watts per gigabyte (watt/GB), the Ultrastar 7K3000 drive delivers 50 percent more capacity in the same footprint and does so at a 32 percent reduction in watts/GB versus Hitachi's prior generation Ultrastar A7K2000 drives. With its dense 3TB capacity, it is now possible to achieve a colossal 1.8PB in the footprint of a standard 19-inch enterprise storage rack by stacking 10 4U, 60-bay enclosures.
Hitachi's 3.5-inch Ultrastar 7K3000 capacity density also allows better utilization of floor space in terms of GB per square foot (GB/sq ft.) and watts/GB when compared to 2.5-inch, capacity-optimized, 7,200 RPM enterprise hard drives. Today these 2.5-inch drives cost roughly twice the dollars per GB ($/GB) of 3TB, 3.5-inch 7,200 RPM drives with 66 percent less capacity. To reach the same capacity as a 3TB, 3.5-inch Ultrastar 7K3000 drive, customers would have to purchase three 1TB 2.5-inch 7,200 RPM drives, which will consume up to 170 percent higher watts to power the drives and will occupy three times the storage array slots.
The Ultrastar 7K3000 family represents the first Hitachi 7,200 RPM drives in both 6Gb/s SATA and 6Gb/s SAS interfaces for easy integration into legacy and new storage environments. All Ultrastar 7K3000 drives are designed, built and tested using Hitachi's 10K RPM enterprise-class technology and quality standards, making them perfect for tiered storage architectures that combine Hitachi solid-state drives (SSD), 10K RPM 2.5-inch drives and 7,200 RPM 3.5-inch drives. Storage system architects can deploy implementations that use a combination of SSD and 10K RPM 2.5-inch drives to provide the highest levels of mission-critical system performance and 7,200 RPM 3.5-inch drives as a low cost-per-gigabyte solution for capacity-optimized enterprise storage and other 24x7 lower input/output (I/O) applications. This allows for a great deal of flexibility in designing storage solutions that provide exactly the level of performance the application requires for the least cost and maximum return on investment.
The Ultrastar 7K3000 SATA and SAS models are available with a bulk data encryption (BDE) options. While the Ultrastar 7K3000 SATA model uses proprietary Hitachi encryption, the Ultrastar 7K3000 dual-port SAS model is targeted at emerging 6Gb/s SAS enterprise infrastructures and is designed to meet the industry standard TCG Enterprise_A encryption specification.
The new Hitachi Ultrastar 7K3000 family comes in 3TB and 2TB offerings, and is now shipping with a 6Gb/s SATA interface worldwide. The Ultrastar 7K3000 6Gb/s SAS family will be available in mid-2011.
Highlights
• Hitachi GST ships the world's first 7,200 RPM, 3TB enterprise-class hard disk drive (HDD).
• New Ultrastar 7K3000 drive family is the first 7,200 RPM enterprise-class HDD to deliver 2.0 million hours mean time between failure¹ (MTBF), resulting in a 40 percent lower annualized failure rate (AFR) than enterprise drives rated at 1.2 million hours MTBF.
• Hitachi GST's first family of 7,200 RPM, 3.5-inch enterprise-class drives available in both 6 gigabits per second (6Gb/s) Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) and Serial ATA (SATA) interfaces.

Synology® Unveils DiskStation DS411slim

Taipei, Taiwan—January 25, 2011—Synology® Inc. today launched the DiskStation DS411slim, a palm-sized 4-bay NAS server, which boasts a read speed of over 100MB/sec and is tailored for home and small office users who look for a green and quiet file sharing and backup solution, along with multimedia enrichment.
With a small and lightweight construction, the DS411slim measures 120X105X142mm, nearly a quarter of the size of a conventional 3.5-inch 4-bay NAS server, and weighs 0.66 kg only. However, its compact design does not sacrifice its high performance, which reaches 106.9MB/sec reading and 48.6MB/sec writing speeds under RAID 5 configuration in a Windows® environment.
The smart fan design of the DS411slim significantly eliminates the noise. The DS411slim preserves silence in hibernation and measures 21.1 dB(A) with 4 disks fully loaded in operation, which is lower than the average noise level of 28-33 dB(A) in a quiet room.

Synology® Unveils DiskStation DS411slim

Adopting 2.5'' hard drives, the DS411slim is reliable, tolerating a higher level of vibration whereas consuming less power. The fully loaded DS411slim is energy-saving with merely 16.8 watts in operation and even 9.6 watts in hibernation. The DS411slim is powered by a 1.6GHz CPU, 256MB DDR3 RAM, one Gigabit LAN port, two USB 2.0 ports and one eSATA port. Compliant with 1TB hard disks, the DS411slim supports a maximum capacity of 4TB. Its snap-in trays further minimizes users' effort in replacing and installing disks.
"We have observed that the price gap between 2.5'' and 3.5'' hard drives is narrowing. Now the DS411slim is more affordable with no compromise on its high performance and versatile features," commented Peter Chen, product manager of Synology Inc.

Digital StormÂ’s Enix Merges Minimalist Aesthetics with Brute Force Computing Power
Digital Storm's Enix Merges Minimalist Aesthetics with Brute Force Computing Power
Sandy Bridge architecture, vertical heat dissipation, efficient internal structure and above 4.7GHz overclocks, create a powerful gaming system unlike any other
Fremont, Calif. - (January 24, 2011) - Digital Storm, the predominant name in computer system integration and engineering, proudly debuts it's most innovative and efficient PC design to date - Enix.

Digital StormÂ’s Enix Merges Minimalist Aesthetics with Brute Force Computing Power

The Enix from Digital Storm shatters the status quo by delivering bleeding edge performance while maintaining the minimalistic footprint of modern desktop computers. By disregarding the common wisdom that bigger is better, the Enix's small profile takes full advantage of the Micro ATX format. Overclocks of 4.7GHz and above are easily achieved thanks to the Enix's vertically cooled chassis and Intel's new powerful Sandy Bridge architecture. In addition, the motherboard is rotated 90 degrees taking full advantage of heat's natural tendency to rise. The Enix can also be customized to fit a dual GTX 580 configuration, giving it the versatility of being an elite gaming machine or a high performance workstation.
The Enix looks like no other desktop computer because it isn't one; it foregoes the inherited inefficiencies to be born anew in a bold sleek design. At its center is a computing engine capable of delivering the type of staggering performance most users thought wasn't possible with a modern desktop computer of similar size.

Digital StormÂ’s Enix Merges Minimalist Aesthetics with Brute Force Computing Power

The design of the Enix's internal structure gives it numerous advantages over conventional desktop computers. The Enix's 90 degree motherboard rotation offers easy access to ports at the top of the chassis, eliminating the need to reach behind the computer to connect peripherals. Also, located at the top of the Enix is a hot-swap bay and two USB 3.0 ports. The hot-swap bay makes it easy to take your data on the go and the USB 3.0 ports provide blazing fast data transfer speeds. Additionally, the hard-drives in the Enix are all installed on the side of the chassis so that they can be passively cooled, minimizing noise for a silent user experience.

Digital StormÂ’s Enix Merges Minimalist Aesthetics with Brute Force Computing Power

"Enix's design is a dramatic departure from any system we've ever built in the past. By rethinking conventional PC design the Enix provides our customers with every imaginable advantage over other machines," remarked Rajeev Kuruppu, Digital Storm's Director of Product Development. "Accessibility to all the components is unparalleled and the vertically designed chassis keeps everything cool and quiet. Couple that with an outrageously overclocked Sandy Bridge chip and you have one of the most efficient and powerful machines on the market."
Digital Storm's Enix is available for purchase at http://www.digitalstormonline.com/compblackops.asp with a base configuration starting at $1,132.

Intel Declares Quarterly Cash Dividend, Authorizes Additional $10 Billion for Share Repurchases

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Jan. 24, 2011 - Intel Corporation today announced that its board of directors has declared an 18.12 cents per share quarterly dividend (72.48 cents per share on an annual basis), reflecting the previously announced 15 percent increase from the fourth quarter of 2010. The dividend will be payable on March 1, 2011 to stockholders of record on Feb. 7, 2011. The Intel board is also increasing the authorization limit for share repurchases by an additional $10 billion, which increases the overall outstanding buyback authorization to $14.2 billion.
"In 2010, Intel achieved its best and most profitable year ever," said Paul Otellini, Intel president and CEO. "Today's announcement signals confidence in our fundamental business strategies both today and looking forward, allowing us to return more cash to shareholders."
Intel began paying a cash dividend in 1992 and has paid out approximately $21 billion to its shareholders in dividends. Intel cash dividends paid during 2010 totaled approximately $3.5 billion.
Since the company's stock buyback program began in 1990, Intel has repurchased approximately 3.4 billion shares at a cost of approximately $70 billion. Taken together since their inception, Intel's dividends and stock buyback program have returned approximately $91 billion to shareholders.
Intel (NASDAQ: INTC) is a world leader in computing innovation. The company designs and builds the essential technologies that serve as the foundation for the world's computing devices. Additional information about Intel is available at newsroom.intel.com and blogs.intel.com.

Risk Factors
The above statements and any others in this document that refer to plans and expectations for the first quarter, the year and the future are forward-looking statements that involve a number of risks and uncertainties. Many factors could affect Intel's actual results, and variances from Intel's current expectations regarding such factors could cause actual results to differ materially from those expressed in these forward-looking statements. Intel presently considers the following to be the important factors that could cause actual results to differ materially from the corporation's expectations.
Dividend declarations, the dividend rate and the stock buyback are at the discretion of Intel's board of directors, and plans for future dividends and stock buybacks may be revised by the board. Intel's dividend and stock buyback programs could be affected by changes in Intel's operating results, its capital spending programs, changes in its cash flows and changes in the tax laws, as well as by the level and timing of acquisition and investment activity.
Demand could be different from Intel's expectations due to factors including changes in business and economic conditions; customer acceptance of Intel's and competitors' products; changes in customer order patterns including order cancellations; and changes in the level of inventory at customers.
Intel operates in intensely competitive industries that are characterized by a high percentage of costs that are fixed or difficult to reduce in the short term and product demand that is highly variable and difficult to forecast. Revenue and the gross margin percentage are affected by the timing of Intel product introductions and the demand for and market acceptance of Intel's products; actions taken by Intel's competitors, including product offerings and introductions, marketing programs and pricing pressures and Intel's response to such actions; and Intel's ability to respond quickly to technological developments and to incorporate new features into its products.
The gross margin percentage could vary significantly from expectations based on capacity utilization; variations in inventory valuation, including variations related to the timing of qualifying products for sale; changes in revenue levels; product mix and pricing; the timing and execution of the manufacturing ramp and associated costs; start-up costs; excess or obsolete inventory; changes in unit costs; defects or disruptions in the supply of materials or resources; product manufacturing quality/yields; and impairments of long-lived assets, including manufacturing, assembly/test and intangible assets.
Expenses, particularly certain marketing and compensation expenses, as well as restructuring and asset impairment charges, vary depending on the level of demand for Intel's products and the level of revenue and profits.
The tax rate expectation is based on current tax law and current expected income. The tax rate may be affected by the jurisdictions in which profits are determined to be earned and taxed; changes in the estimates of credits, benefits and deductions; the resolution of issues arising from tax audits with various tax authorities, including payment of interest and penalties; and the ability to realize deferred tax assets.
Gains or losses from equity securities and interest and other could vary from expectations depending on gains or losses on the sale, exchange, change in the fair value or impairments of debt and equity investments; interest rates; cash balances; and changes in fair value of derivative instruments.
The majority of Intel's non-marketable equity investment portfolio balance is concentrated in companies in the flash memory market segment, and declines in this market segment or changes in management's plans with respect to Intel's investments in this market segment could result in significant impairment charges, impacting restructuring charges as well as gains/losses on equity investments and interest and other.
Intel's results could be impacted by adverse economic, social, political and physical/infrastructure conditions in countries where Intel, its customers or its suppliers operate, including military conflict and other security risks, natural disasters, infrastructure disruptions, health concerns and fluctuations in currency exchange rates.
Intel's results could be affected by the timing of closing of acquisitions and divestitures.
Intel's results could be affected by adverse effects associated with product defects and errata (deviations from published specifications), and by litigation or regulatory matters involving intellectual property, stockholder, consumer, antitrust and other issues, such as the litigation and regulatory matters described in Intel's SEC reports. An unfavorable ruling could include monetary damages or an injunction prohibiting us from manufacturing or selling one or more products, precluding particular business practices, impacting Intel's ability to design its products, or requiring other remedies such as compulsory licensing of intellectual property.
A detailed discussion of these and other factors that could affect Intel's results is included in Intel's SEC filings, including the report on Form 10-Q for the fiscal quarter ended Sept. 25, 2010.
