Trendnet debuts new 450Mbps wireless gaming adapter at CES 2011
CES 2011, Las Vegas- Trendnet has been at CES as long as I can recall and this year the company is pulling some really cool gear out of its hat for wireless fans. Trendnet has a new wireless gaming adapter that console users will like. The new adapter is called the 450Mbps Wireless N Gaming Adapter model TEW-687GA.
The adapter promises blazing fast 802.11n wireless speeds and Trendnet says that it will break the 150Mbps perforce barrier and in testing the adapter has reached 200Mbps bursts transmissions. The adapter has MIMO technology integrated with three spatial streams per antenna for more bandwidth and better connectivity.
The adapter has a Gigabit wired Ethernet port and supports Wi-Fi Protected Setup for easy construction for secure networks and more. The adapter works best when paired with the Trendnet TEW-691GR router, but it should work with any brand router. The adapter will ship this month for $149.99.
"TRENDnet was ecstatic to be able to deliver the first ever 450Mbps wireless n router to market in early June of last year, followed by the first ever 450Mbps access point last month," stated Pei Huang, President and CEO of TRENDnet. "The fact that we are also on pace to launch the very first 450Mbps wireless n adapter is yet another signal of TRENDnet's ability to innovate in the wireless networking space."

iPad 2 case turns up at CES - magic happens
CES 2011, Las Vegas - iPad 2 cases have been around for a little while now - the usual trickle of news or pictures of them. This one trumps them all by having a machined aluminum iPad 2 mockup inside!
Dexim had it at their exhibition, the casing being a book-like sleeve with a bluetooth keyboard that magnetically adheres to the front cover which allows a laptop-style setup or keyboard free when you want to run naked.
Engadget asked if they could fit their iPad inside to which they were told it would not fit as it was designed for the next-gen iPad. They noticed it was a little slimmer than the current iPad with a taper leading to the edges which reminded them of the iPod touch. A home button near the bottom edge with a large square for the speaker.

RumorTT: Windows 8 to be teased at CES tomorrow
CES 2011, Las Vegas - Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer will be on stage tomorrow for the opening keynote at CES. Ballmer is set to make some announcements to Windows Phone, Xbox and Windows.
The main announcement is said to be news of Windows running on ARM chips. Sources are also pointing toward a show-off of Windows 8 for the first time ever.
ARM Chip manufacturers NVIDIA, Qualcomm and Texas Instruments have all signed-up to produce processors for Windows 8 systems. Ballmer is rumored to not refer to Windows 8 - but to "the next version of Windows". Microsoft have also promised a "major revamp" of Windows for slate applications with Windows 8.
Microsoft have recently hit Milestone builds - so not only do we know it's coming, but we know it's coming along very well.

CES 2011, Las Vegas - The PlayStation Phone can only be hidden for so long, more spy shots have been released from the rumored Sony Ericsson handset.
Want proof? Xperia and PlayStation branding have now been added to the device. The device's menu system also seems to be running Android Gingerbread 2.3 - will we see a proper announcement of the PlayStation Phone at CES? Time will tell.

All Toshiba SSD hits 90K IOPS and 510MB/s Read (video)
CES 2011, Las Vegas - The first shock of CES 2011 came today. At Storage Visions, Toshiba showed a new enterprise SSD that uses a Toshiba controller and Toshiba flash. The new MKxx01GRZB will be offered in 100, 200 and 400GB capacities and features enterprise SLC flash on a SAS interface.
Talk is cheap so Toshiba had their new enterprise SSD on display. Here we see 90K IOPS in action.

Micron reveals RealSSD M400, Second-Gen SATA 6G up to 512GB (video)
CES 2011, Las Vegas - Storage Visions allowed us to take an early look at the second generation SATA 6G SSD from Micron/Crucial. It seems Micron has plans to split the naming scheme and Micron, the parent company is keeping the RealSSD name while Crucial is taking another path. The Crucial M4 is the same physical drive as the Micron RealSSD C400.
Most of our readers know the RealSSD C300 is the fastest SSD available on the planet. The new C400/M4 will soon take that title as long as Micron/Crucial gets their drive to market before SandForce challenges for king of the hill status. 2011 is going to be another great year for all storage enthusiasts since both drives will be faster than present drives and both are claiming superiority.
The drives gets new 25nm NAND flash memory and the fastest drive claims a super fast read speed of 415MB/s and comes in a totally impressive capacity of 512GB.

ASUS outs Tegra 2 Eee Pad Transformer tablet with detachable keyboard dock (video)
CES 2011, Las Vegas - You just got done seeing the new ASUS Eee Slate and one of the other products announced by the Taiwanese company today was the Eee Pad Transformer. Yes, yet another tablet to hit the market, but this one you want.
As you can see in the video above, it comes with a dual-core NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor for full 1080p video playback and ASUS claims it offers the fastest web browsing experience in this class as well as the best multi-tasking performance. Not only that, but ASUS also went on to say that it offers the fastest flash video performance. I am not sure exactly what that means and why it is important - but what is important is that you can watch 1080p YouTube content without dropping frames and / or bring the system to a halt.
Besides the performance and while it is all good on that front and NVIDIA get some much needed love in this section of the market, the big thing with the Eee Pad Transformer is that comes with a dock. And not just any dock, it includes a full size QWERTY keyboard with extra USB ports and a card reader.
The dock also provides extended battery life bringing it up to an estimated 16 hours total, which if it works out to be true, should easily be able to provide enough battery for a full day of work on the road without needing a wall socket for charging.

Viking Modular Adds To Their DIMM Portfolio
CES 2011, Las Vegas - Viking Modular attended Storage Visions and today Cameron and I payed a visit. At the booth Viking displayed their SandForce based DIMM SSD that uses power from the memory slot to power the drive. We are still waiting for a pair of these drives to show up for our SR2 build but they are coming.
New to the line up is the new DIMM memory module that is not an SSD but an actual memory module but the punch line is this module comes with its own battery back up add on. The battery appears to be a pair of capacitors that will allow for full time protection even in the event of a major power outage or hiccup in the system.
Viking is also adding to their innovative SSD lineup and showed off a pair of new, extremely small SSDs. These drives are designed for the smallest systems where space is a premium. On the left is a new add in part with a SATA interface. The unit on the right is designed for on board installation.

CES 2011, Las Vegas - Ah CES. Where people sneak past security and fall from the ceiling Mission Impossible style just to get glimpses of new tech or new anything really. But, we all love it, don't we?
The latest leak is a picture of "Avatar Kinect". Avatar Kinect will be a system for Xbox Live avatar interaction in a separate chat room, where players talk to each other outside of games.
The feature is meant to roll out with the next Xbox update and is also rumored to include some stand-up interaction for chat, instead of the traditional headset or webcam chat style. Not long now!

LG Optimus Tab spotted?
CES 2011, Las Vegas - The rumored Optimus Tab may have been caught out at CES just now. It looks to be running Android 2.x and powered on an 8.9-inch display.
There's no concrete info on it yet, but the tease alone is enough to get some feathers moving at LG. Samsung has joined Borat in having "great success!" with the Galaxy Tab, so LG will only want to replicate that and obviously that might be in the form of the Optimus Tab.

ASUS launches Eee Slate EP121 - world's most powerful tablet (video)
CES 2011, Las Vegas - ASUS has kicked off CES 2011 with the first major press conference here in Las Vegas and one of the new products they just got done announcing was the Eee Slate EP121, which is being promoted as the world's most powerful tablet computer.
ASUS Chairman Johnny Shih walked onto stage and introduced the EP121 as you can see in the video and it also includes a short demo. Specifications of the system include an Intel Core i5-470UM processor, 64GB SSD, 4GB of RAM, a 12.1-inch 1280 x 800 multi-touch IPS display and it will come installed with Windows 7 Home Premium.
There are many input options including a Wacom digitizer pen, Bluetooth keyboard and the multi-touch screen.
The Eee Slate will go on sale this month and go for between $999 and $1099. ASUS showed a demo which included some fairly intensive multi-tasking and for consumers looking for a portable computing experience with powerful performance for its class, this will probably be one to watch closely.

ASUS Eee Pad Slider & Transformer - tablets with physical keyboard
CES 2011, Las Vegas - ASUS have finally unveiled their Tegra 2-powered 10.1-inch tablets that are unique because they include physical keyboards.
The Eee Pad Slider (in the above picture, on the left) is poised to run Google's Honeycomb, includes an IPS display with a 1280x800 resolution, mini-HDMI and mini-USB ports as well as a microSD card slot. It weighs 2.2-pounds and comes in at .5-inch thick. The Eee Pad Slider also includes dual cameras (1.2 megapixel front-facing and 5 megapixel with an LED flash on the back).
The Transformer is a 10.1-inch tablet that comes with a laptop dock with a full sized keyboard and touchpad. It is too poised to run Google's Honeycomb and includes a dual-core Tegra 2 processor, two cameras and the same IPS 1280x800 display.
The dock includes an integrated battery that will keep the tablet running for 16 hours on charge, with the tablet on it's own able to last around 8 hours.
ASUS have said the Transformer should be between $400 and $700 with the Slider coming in between $500 and $800. They should be available in April and May respectively.

imation Takes the Tape out of Tape Backup
CES 2011, Las Vegas - imation takes has replaced the traditional tape back up device with a new, disk based backup system. The new RDX consists of the A8, an 8 cartridge iSCSI, 2U storage station and the eight removable cartridges. The system is capable of delivering up to 60MB/s or 150GB per hour performance.
imation also released single dock versions, one for internal and one or external use. The external uses a USB 3.0 interface and the internal uses eSATA.
The new tapeless, tape backup allows for up to 1TB but imation is already planning 1.5 and 2TB drives.

CES 2011 Rumor Mill - Vizio planning on unveiling new tablet and smartphone
CES 2011, Las Vegas - Vizio, mostly known for their affordable HDTVs, is looking to make a big splash at CES in the mobile industry. An 8 inch tablet and 4 inch smartphone could be on display from Vizio according to Engadget. With Vizio's well known reputation for budget friendly devices, these could be hot items when they release.
Buzz surrounding Vizio's tablet includes the fact that it may be running Android 3.0, also known as "Honeycomb." Vizio's smartphone includes stats like a 5mp camera, WiFi capability, a front facing camera for videoconferencing, and the Android OS as well. These devices could hit shelves in Summer 2011; We'll be there to take a look if these devices indeed hit the CES floor!

Samsung announces development of energy-conscious DDR4 memory
Here's an announcement that hardware fans have been looking forward to for some time. Samsung, one of the leaders in memory manufacturing, has announced today the development of a DDR4 DRAM stick that performs reads and writes with up to 40 percent more power efficiency than DDR3.
Samsung's DDR4 currently has a bandwidth max of 2.13Gbps at 1.2V, but these modules are expected to eventually be able to hit speeds of 4Gbps. This memory will be a godsend to mobile devices like laptops which will be able to use Samsung's Pseudo Open Drain technology to minimize battery drain by the modules. Samsung is also working with server manufacturers to acquire the JEDEC certification necessary for server implementation.

Hitachi unveils new 2.5" and 3.5" HDDs for video duties
CES 2011, Las Vegas - Hitachi is at CES with all of its wide and varied product categories on display. Among the new offerings at the show are the new CinemaStar 5K2000 and C5K750 lines of AV HDDs. These drives are optimized for all sorts of video storage duties from DVRs to video surveillance. The drives are also optimized for silent operation and low power consumption.
The 3.5-inch CinemaStar 5K2000 has 2TB and 1.5TB capacity HDDs in it. The drives boast 667GB per platter and use 4096-bit sectors. The drives need about 4.2W of power or less when idling and only produce 2.4 bels of noise in operation above ambient sound. The line of HDDs are shipping right now all around the world.
The smaller 2.5-inch C5K750 family of drives has 375GB per platter and is offered in three capacities. The capacity range includes 750GB, 640GB, and 500GB offerings. The drives sip power with about 0.5W needed when idling and about 1.5W in operation. The drives also use 4096-byte sectors and are shipping right now.

Smart-Leaf Y Touch PC hangs on the wall
AIO computers are a great way to save space on a desk or a counter in many homes or offices. The machines put all the hardware into the screen so no towers or other components have to be on or around the area where you put the screen. The catch for some users is that they don't have room on a counter for anything including an AIO computer. This is where a machine like the Smart-Leaf Y comes in.

Noctua NH-C14 CPU Cooler
Introduction
Noctua strikes again and delivers the newest concept in their cooling line-up. With all the CPU coolers I have received over the years I gained a lot of respect for the Noctua name and simply, I love the "professional" or "heavy-duty" feel of the Noctua coolers. Even the smaller 90mm fan driven coolers have the feel of a superior cooler before you even strap it on to see (and not hear) the results they produce.
This new cooler is a takeoff of the NH-C12 SE14 with a bit, well, a lot of the NH-D14 incorporated in the design. Taking the idea of the NH-C12 SE14, Noctua is offering a proper 140mm fan driven version this time, rather than adapting a fan to a smaller cooler. This isn't just a simple enlarging of the old cooler either; Noctua rethought the concept, and at first glance it looks like half of a NH-D14 that has been bent to a horizontal arrangement, or it allows the fans to blow down on the motherboard. Taking things a step further, Noctua offers this cooler the benefit of two NF-P14 fans included to keep temperatures at bay.
It seems every time I look at a Noctua cooler that is fresh to the scene I end up really impressed with the coolers on top of better things like reduced sound levels and temperatures. I say we jump right into things and see just what this new concept offers us. Hopefully, past experiences with Noctua aren't going to change any time soon, and I will have yet another product from Noctua to recommend to anyone in search of quality air cooling without making your head hurt from the droning noise that emanates from most tower chassis'.

Lenovo CES 2011 Launch Coverage
Lenovo are hitting CES hard and fast this year and up to about a month before CES the company has been briefing us on some of the exciting new products that will be making an appearance. There are three main areas; the new ThinkPad Edge Laptops, IdeaPad Notebooks and IdeaCenter All in One unit.
First up, we've got the ThinkPad Edge which is getting two new models; the E220 and E420. Both models will carry the standard Lenovo goodies which include the ThinkPad keyboard, Trackpoint and touchpad, along with the ThinkVantage Technologies suite.

In addition to the standard features, the new E220 and E420 will focus on a premium design with new extras including infinity displays offering a TV-like appearance, magnesium / aluminium construction and real metal accents.
The E220 is less than 1" thick and carries with it a weight of less than 3.5 pounds. The E420 comes in slightly thicker at just over 1" and a little heavier at four pounds. Both models will support the i3, i5 and i7 line-up of Intel processors and feature Lenovos Enhanced Experience 2.0 which we'll cover more later on.

While the emphasis on the new ThinkPads is business, features like Dolby Home Theatre audio and HDMI mean that you're also able to enjoy both music and movies, be it on the ThinkPad or on an external device using the HDMI port.
Available at the start off April, the E220 and E420 will start at $899 US and $749 US respectively.
If you feel like taking the suit off and moving onto something that offers style in a louder sense, the IdeaPad is probably for you with a huge line-up of different models. The S series starting at $329.99 US and due for release in March 2011 offers everything the person looking for internet on the go needs.

The S205 packs an 11.6" screen, AccuType Chiclet keyboard and has optional integrated 3G and long battery life. The S100 comes in at 10.1" and weighs less than 2.2 points. Available in a wide range of colors including red, fuchsia, sky blue and black, the chances are there's a color to suit your style.
Moving up in price, the B series is due in April and starts at $499. Lenovo say it's the Essential PC for Work and Play. Using up to a 2nd Generation Intel Core i5 processor and featuring both Windows 7 Professional and Lenovo Enhanced Experience with RapidBoot technology, the B570 and B470 has both work and play in mind.

If you want to spend a bit more you can move to the V Series of laptops which will see the V570, V470 and V370 launching in April with a starting price tag of $499 US. Lenovo say that the V series is for people who want to Work Smarter and Faster. Features including an aluminium case and cover and thin 21mm design are the cosmetic advantages the new V series IdeaPads bring.

Like the E series ThinkPads, the V series will include the new Lenovo Enhanced Experience 2.0. Also included are a number of security features including OneKey Rescue System for quick data backup and recovery along with the Lenovo Security Suite which consists of a number of security tools that help encrypt your data, protecting it from other users. If that wasn't enough, we've also got a biometric fingerprint reader and USB Port Locker that prevents unauthorized access to the USB ports. Maybe Lenovo should think about calling this the FortKnox series.

At $899 US the Y Series dubbed High Performance Mobile Entertainment is seeing three new offerings; the Y570d, T570 and Y470. We're fairly sure the d doesn't stand for diesel powered.

All three new models include Lenovo Enhanced Experience 2.0. The Y470 and Y570 also have the option to support Lenovo RapidDrive SSD to help make boot times and general usage even faster. The CPU line-up goes to the Intel Core i7 and video is offered with options including the NVIDIA GT 550M 1GB to help make for an optimized on-the-go multimedia experience.
Also featured is OneKey Theatre II which automatically maximizes advanced audio-visual settings thanks to SRS Premium Sound and JBL designed speakers. If you want to kick it up another dimension, the Y570d offers 3D Vision compatibility from NVIDIA. With a flick of a switch you can enjoy 3D content with the included glasses.
If you're looking for something that isn't portable and instead want something that can sit on your desk permanently at home, the new B520 IdeaCentre carrying a starting price of $899 US and due June 2011 might be what you're after.

Looking at what the B520 offers, it's clear that the Maximum Entertainment tag they're giving the system holds truth. With support for Intel Core i7 and a 23" Full HD multi touch display, the B520 looks the goods. Apart from this, options including 3D Vision from NVIDIA, SRS Premium Sound and 3-in-1 Mouse with motion-drive gaming and air-mouse functionality; the B520 seems like it can clearly deliver.

If the B520 seems a little expensive, the A320 starting at $699 US offering Intel Core i5 and the slimmest All in One (AIO) design at just 18.5mm deep at its thinnest point may be a good option. Carrying the same price tag, the A320 offers a 21.5" screen like the B520, but instead is also multi-touch and features Hardware TV, giving you the chance to watch HD TV on it. You can enjoy computing or TV separately at a touch of a button, or enjoy both at the same time with a picture-in-picture function. The A320 also offers an i5 Intel Core processor.

For something cheaper, the C205 at $449 US is a smaller 16.5" 16:0 single-touch display. Designed for people who are looking for an "info-tainment" PC for an area like the kitchen or other space limited area, its 720p supporting screen, web camera, microphone and integrated speakers make it a great option for chatting online and general web surfing. Unlike the other AIOs, the C205 uses a Dual Core AMD processor and discrete-class 1GB AMD HD 6310.
Wrapping everything up, we've got to quickly cover the Enhanced Experience 2.0 for Windows 7 which is something we've mentioned a few times throughout the article. For Lenovos supporting EE 2.0 customers, they can start their PC on average 20 seconds faster than a typical Windows 7 computer.
If your Lenovo also supports RapidDrive SSD, you'll be able to start your PC in less than 10 seconds. Also, thanks to SSD you'll be able to open applications two times faster. To be completely honest, you're probably not really going to feel the applications load two times faster, but moving to an SSD helps drop heat, noise and does indeed offer a certain amount of zippiness to the PC.
EE 2.0 supported Idea line PCs are optimized for multimedia with Enhanced Digital Audio and HD graphics, while Think branded PCs are optimized for businesses with robust security and rich web conferencing features. All EE 2.0 supported Lenovos will be known via a certification sticker affixed to them.
Lenovo really do have some sweet devices coming out over the coming months and hopefully we'll get a chance to take a look at some of them in more detail. The stand outs for me personally would have to be the B520 IdeaCentre with support for 3D Vision and in the laptop department the V series with some added color and the Y570d with 3D Vision support which includes 3D Glasses.
No matter what, though, the chances are there's a Lenovo within your price range and more importantly within your needs. This is thanks to so many new models launching over the coming months. Keep an eye on the front of TweakTown for more exciting launches at CES.

Up to 4GB of system memory can be installed, using industry standard 1.5v DDR3 (1066/800) un-buffered SO-DIMMs. Hard drive and optical drive support is provided by five SATA III ports with 6Gb/s transfer rates, and there is an additional eSATA connector on the rear panel with 3Gb/s transfer rate for external drive access.

Advanced 88SE9130 6Gb/s SATA Controller Enables Break-Through Dual SSD/HDD Performance For High-End Consumer Electronics
Irvine and Santa Clara, Calif. (Jan 4, 2011) Marvell (Nasdaq: MRVL), a worldwide leader in integrated silicon solutions, today launched the Marvell® 88SE9130 6Gb/s SATA controller powered by HyperDuo™ embedded processor technology. The 88SE9130 solution enables breakthrough solid state drive (SSD) benefits to consumer desktop motherboards and an array of consumer electronics (CE) products. Powered by HyperDuo technology, the 88SE9130 controller enables SSD-like performance while allowing all data to be stored on a traditional SATA hard disk drive (HDD).
Configured with one hard disk drive and one SSD drive, the 88SE9130 uses intelligent algorithms to automatically pin hot data files and directories to a SATA SSD while enabling all data to be safely stored on a larger capacity SATA HDD. Using industry-standard benchmarks, such as PCMark, on consumer desktop machines, Marvell has demonstrated the 88SE9130 HyperDuo solution can achieve 80 percent of the performance of a SATA SSD while storing all data on a traditional large capacity SATA HDD.

The 88SE9130 furthers these capabilities with two product modes: Safe Mode and Capacity Mode. Safe Mode provides optimal data protection by mirroring data on SSD to the hard disk for maximum resiliency, while Capacity Mode combines SSD and HDD capacity together for the most cost-effective configuration. In both modes, consumers see the same single drive volume (Local Disk (C:)) as they do today for maximum simplicity and zero change to their daily computing habits.
