AMD intros Juniper-powered Radeon HD 6770 & 6750 for OEM :: Posted by THRASHER2
We guess it's renaming time again, and it's apparently AMD's turn because the company has taken something old, namely the Juniper-based Radeon HD 5770 & HD 5750, and put a new label on them - Radeon HD 6770 and HD 6750, respectively.
The 'new' cards are aimed for OEM use, and like their predecessors have DirectX 11 support, 800 (6770) or 720 (6750) Stream Processors, a 128-bit memory interface, and GDDR5 memory. As a plus over their Juniper brethren, the Radeon HD 6700s come with a HDMI 1.4a output and OpenGL 4.1 support.

New Sapphire HD 6970 card exposed, comes with turn-key OC'in :: Posted by THRASHER2
Not surprisingly, Sapphire is currently preparing the release of a customized Radeon HD 6970, a new Cayman-powered card that has a blue PCB (reference models have a black PCB) and a new, dual-slot cooler with metal inserts and what looks like a lock that can be rotated with a key or maybe a coin.
If that is indeed a lock of some kind it may be used to switch between the two BIOSes onboard, one 'with' stock clocks and another with higher frequencies. Unfortunately, the card's specs are unknown so we'll probably have to wait for Sapphire's announcement to know what's what. Still, you can bet the card to have 1536 Stream Processors, a 256-bit memory interface backed by 2GB of GDDR5 memory, CrossFireX support, and dual-DVI, HDMI and two mini DisplayPort outputs.

Bizarre Creations faces closure :: Posted by THRASHER2
Activision unable to find a buyer
Things have apparently gone from bad to worse for developer Bizarre Creations. Word is now that despite the best efforts from owner Activision, they have not been able to find a buyer for the developer responsible for the development of such titles as the Project Gotham Racing series, Blur, and the most recent release, James Bond Bloodstone.
While Activision says that they have continued to seek a buyer in order to keep the studio together, no buyer emerged despite rumors that several publishers showed interest. The rumor that had been circulating is that Microsoft had been considering reacquiring the studio to develop PGR 5 which is the next chapter in the Project Gotham Racing franchise. Sources tell us that while Microsoft might have considered this option, apparently no talks or deal was ever started.
As for the studio that had already been put on notice by Activision, it is confirmed now that the studio has been recommended for closure. According to the whispers we are hearing from our sources close to the situation, barring some sort of last minute miracle closure is all but assured.
As we told you previously, Activision was unhappy (to say the least) over the large investment that they made in the studio to develop Blur which, despite very positive reviews, didnÂ’t sell very well. Some have suggested that the video game racing market is changing and Blur, despite all of its innovative ideas, didnÂ’t find an audience.
After Blur, the studio worked on the 007 Bloodstone title, which also was not the smash hit that the studio needed to escape the situation that they are in now.

Microsoft brings in piracy checks on Xbox :: Posted by THRASHER2
All in the latest update
Players updating their Xbox games consoles will find that Microsoft has slipped a bit of code into it that checks to see if any of their software is pirated. The update makes chanes to the Gamercard, and re-enables booting from discs on the Xbox 360, may have a piracy check included in the update.
Some users have been reporting that the software runs checks against some of the more popular Xbox 360 games like Halo: Reach and Call of Duty: Black Ops. Get Your Gadgets Going.com has an updated story which details how the update targets modders and anyone who does things that Microsoft does not like.
It will cause some headaches for those who are playing pirated software on your Xbox 360. The new piracy check is similar to the AP 2.5 checks which appeared in November and will induce pirated software to render as unrecognized media.
The dark satanic rumour mill claims that the console is then flagged for a banning from Microsoft down the road, although there is little to prove this.

Nvidia 28nm Geforce aims for Q4 2011 :: Posted by THRASHER2
At TSMC
Nvidia is getting close to tape out its 28nm graphics core. The company is aiming to have a new chip in 28nm ready for autumn launch. The target time frame is Q4 2011 for the desktop chip and a bit later for the mobile one.
The chips are made by Nvidia's long term partner, TSMC, so there are no surprises there. TSMC is already taping out some 28nm network chips but graphics chips are far more complex and have billions of transistors these days. It might take them a bit more to get ready for billion(s) transistors graphics cards.
AMD (ATI) graphics is also making its 28nm chips at TSMC and unfortunately for them, Nvidia always gets more love. The specification wars are no on, as both companies have thermal limitations to heed, and as you all know, it is very important to end up at least slightly faster.
The real fight is scheduled for Q4 2011, asuming that both companies can execute flawlessly.

Point of View / TGT GTX 570 Beast first look :: Posted by THRASHER2
Preview:109MHz factory overclock
Today weÂ’ll briefly get to know Point of View / TGT GTX 570 BEAST, the fastest factory overclocked GTX 570 which is now available. Since Nvidia gave its partners a green light for overclocking, the day of the launch saw many factory overclocked cards. One of the fastest so far was the Point of View / TGT GTX 570 Ultra Charged, which boasts a 810MHz GPU, but the GTX 570 Beast beat it with the GPU core at 841MHz. This means that Point of View / TGT pushed the GPU by 109MHz.
Point of View / TGT Beast specification:
Part Number TGT-570-A1-BST
Core Clock Speed 841MHz
Processing Cores 480
Memory Clock Speed 3900MHz
Memory Bandwidth 158.4GB/sec
Shader Clock Speed 1682MHz
Bus PCI-E 2.0
Interface 2x dual-link DVI, 1x Mini-HDMI
Running at an impressive 841MHz core clock, the new GTX 570 is available in two versions depending on the choice of the cooler. One features a reference cooler and is a bit cheaper than the second version, which comes with a 9mm slim-line AquaCopper water cooling block. We received the first one and you can see it on the picture below.

Powercolor rolls out its HD 6950 PCS++ :: Posted by THRASHER2
Updated: Dual BIOS switch does its job
Powercolor has released its new Radeon HD 6950 PCS++ card that will use a dual BIOS feature in order to work at either 880MHz for the GPU or 800MHz for the GPU in safe mode.
According to our info, the PCB of the card is based on Powercolor's own design and they opted for a PCB that is more similar to the HD 6970 so it is no wonder that the card has an ability to unlock all the shaders and happily work at 880MHz. It is a bit unclear wether it already has 1536 shaders in the "second" BIOS, but we guess that you can always unlock it manually. The 2GB of GDDR5 memory is clocked at 1250MHz (5.0Gbps) and paired up with a 256-bit memory interface.
Since we are talking about a PCS++ series card, it is quite normal that it has a non-reference cooler. The cooler is equipped with two 92mm fans and three heatpipes connected to a rather large heatsink with copper base. The card features two DVI, HDMI and two mini DisplayPort outputs and will be bundled with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 game.
Unfortunately, the price or the availability date haven't been announced but we guess that it will show up in retail/e-tail pretty soon.
Update: Powercolor got back to us and we can now confirm that the second BIOS does indeed unlock those extra shaders. So, in addition to the higher HD 6970 clocks, the HD 6950 PCS++ also has 1536 stream processors as well.

Modern Warfare 3 on track for November :: Posted by THRASHER2
All hands on deck from other studios to make it
Infinity Ward isnÂ’t the only one working on the next Call of Duty title, which is expected to be called Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. The latest news that it is an all hands on deck project to make sure that COD:MW3 makes its still unannounced November 2011 release date.
Whispers that we hear seem to indicate that Activision has tasked resources from both Sledgehammer Games and Raven Software to assist with the project in order that the title can be finished in time for release. Reports suggest that Sledgehammer will be greatly reducing work on its upcoming Call of Duty spinoff title in order to assist Infinity Ward with the single player experience in COD:MW3. Raven software, which has in the past worked on map packs for COD projects, will be tasked with providing resources to work on the multiplayer of COD:MW3.
While Activision has yet to officially announce COD:MW3. It is expected that Activision will officially announce COD:MW3 at E3, according to our sources, where they are expected to announce that it will ship in November 2011.
While Activision has not confirmed the reallocation of internal studio resources to the project, multiple sources are indicating this is indeed what has happened. Sources are indicating to us that we should now assume that this will delay the Sledgehammer COD project, but it is unknown how long this delay might be, because little is actually known about the project or the timeline for completion.

iPad 2 news expected in February :: Posted by THRASHER2
Announcement details expected soon
The latest from the Apple grove seems to indicate that an announcement for the second generation iPad is coming soon. This seems to confirm reports from sources who tell us that Apple is keen to get the next generation iPad out before more competitors enter the market space.
While some are suggesting that Apple could be planning an announcement on February 9th, our sources say they have been unable to confirm this. Still, it is suspected that the iPad 2 will arrive in February, but no one seems to know what the exact date will be.
The new iPad 2 is said to offer a significant upgrade over the previous generation by adding many new features that will expand the usefulness of the platform. Sales of the first iPad were much better than even Apple expected, and with many waiting for Apple to arrive with a second generation design before buying one, it is likely that many buyers will be in a frenzy to obtain one once officially announced.

Sapphire Pure Fusion board to sell for €129 :: Posted by THRASHER2
E-350 APU on board
A couple of days ago we came across AsusÂ’ first Fusion ITX board and now itÂ’s SapphireÂ’s turn.
The Pure Fusion Mini E350 has been listed by several e-tailers with prices starting at €129. The board is based around AMD’s E-350 APU at 1.6GHz and Hudson M1 FCH. The APU packs HD 6310 graphics and has an 18W TDP.
The board features two SO-DIMM DDR3 slots, one PCIe x16 slot and one PCIe Mini Card slot. It features two USB 3.0 ports, eSATA 6Gbps, LAN, DVI and HDMI outputs. Internal connectors include 5 SATA 6Gbps ports, four USB 2.0 ports, serial port and Bluetooth is also on board.
According to our info, AMD’s target price for E-350 boards is €129, which doesn’t sound too bad. The E-350 can wipe the floor with any Atom processor, but we hope to see some even cheaper versions over the next few months.

Ivy Bridge 22nm sticks with socket 1155 :: Posted by THRASHER2
DirectX 11 and three display support
The Ivy Bridge 22nm story gets even better. The new chip is socket LGA 1155 and it is socket compatible with the existing Sandy Bridge processors and Sugar Bay 2011 platform. Unfortunately we are quite sure that Cougar point PCH chipset of Sandy Bridge wonÂ’t support the new 22nm Ivy Bridge.
We are afraid that you will still need a new board. Even the Panther point PCH chipset is pin compatible with Cougar Point chipset of Sandy Bridge, but again this might help board manufactures to make boards faster, but end users will need to buy a new board.
The new platform officially supports USB 3.0 and its graphics can deal with DirectX 11. One additional news is that Maho Bay platform graphics now supports three independent displays, something that might come handy to a few, i.e. users in the financial business. Let's not forget the enhanced media performance as well as much better performance in both graphics and CPU area.
Sounds good, and the new platform comes roughly in a year's time, Q1 2012, most likely January 2012 if Intel doesn't hit any delays.

After Extreme i7 990X comes Sandy Bridge E :: Posted by THRASHER2
LGA 2011 in Q4 2011
Back in August 2010, we wrote that a new Core i7 Extreme 990X will appear in Q1 2011. This hasnÂ’t changed. You can read all about it here.
This new 3.46GHz clocked Core i7 Extreme 990X should last all the way to the end of Q3 2011 and in Q4 2011, Intel plans to launch a new high end CPU based on Sandy Bridge E CPU. The new CPU's can have up to eight cores, but our sources are clueless whether this is a six- or eight-core extreme processor.
Intel i7 970 also gets replaced by Sandy Bridge E unlocked CPU and Core i7 2600K and Core i7 960 will get its own replacement with Sandy Bridge E. This might indicate two versions of the Sandy Bridge E CPU, a quad- and six- or eight-core, but this is a pure speculation at this time.
All of them are coming in Q4 2011 and they will last at least through the first half of 2012.

AMD offically launched HD 6700 series :: Posted by THRASHER2
Juniper rebrands
AMD has officially rebranded its HD 5700 series Juniper based graphics cards to Radeon HD 6700 series. The Radeond HD 6750 and the Radeon HD 6770 are now detailed at AMD's website and have the same specs as the old HD 5750 and 5770 cards.
To be fair, a while back AMD did say that the HD 5700 series is here to stay so this rebrand doesn't come as a surprise. On its product page, AMD cleary states that these are based on the HD 5700 series hardware with added support for HDMI 1.4a and it appears that these rebrands are only for OEMs while retail/e-tail is still listing the HD 5700 series cards.
As far as the specs go, the HD 6770 features 800 stream processors, DirectX 11 support and features a 128-bit memory interface paired up with GDDR5 memory. THe HD 6750 has 720 stream processors, while both cards have the same clocks as the old HD 5700 series.
For now it looks like that these two rebrands are OEM only but we'll keep an eye out in case these appear in retail/e-tail. You can find them both here.

The GTX 580 with 3GB of memory
Following the recent release of its Geforce GTX 570 Phantom card, Gainward decided to add yet another GPU to the Phantom series, the GTX 580.
Just like the previously announced GTX 570 Phantom, this one also features a rather unique custom cooler with three 80mm fans, six heatpipes and a large aluminum heatsink with a copper base. The custom cooler also makes this card a bit large so bear in minde that it does take more than two slots.
The new GTX 580 Phantom card features 512 CUDA cores and works at 783MHz for the GPU, 1566MHz for shaders and 4020MHz for 3GB of GDDR5 memory paired up with a 384-bit memory interface.
The backplate features two DVI, HDMI and DisplayPort outputs and the card supports all the goodies like Nvidia CUDA, SLI, 3D Vision Surround, PhysX and support for DirectX 11.
Unfortunately, the release date or the actual price haven't been announced.
