Memory-chip prices set to rise with DRAM demand in Q2
Taiwan’s largest computer memory chipmaker on Tuesday forecast a jump in demand for its components in the second quarter of the year as orders from contract computer manufacturers pick up, heralding an all-but-certain DRAM price hikes. Powerchip Semiconductor Chairman Frank Huang said that between April and June demand for DRAM -- dynamic random-access memory -- would exceed supply, Taiwan's Economic Daily News reported.

Cisco adds Mozy cloud service to Smart Storage box
Cisco Systems today unveiled a cloud storage feature for its series of entry-level desktop NSS 300 Series Smart Storage storage arrays. The Mozy hosted backup service, which has been added to the array's management software, is designed to let users set up automatic cloud-based backups, said David Tucker, vice president of Cisco's small business technology group.

HP to launch enterprise cloud service
Rounding out its portfolio of cloud-related offerings, Hewlett-Packard will launch a cloud compute service next month aimed at enterprises. The company will also start offering computing systems for internal use that will interoperate with the cloud offering, as well as a set of workshops to aid organizations in developing cloud strategies, said Bill Veghte, HP executive vice president overseeing software and solutions.

VMware sales up 37 percent due to spending on virtualization software
VMware's fourth-quarter revenue jumped 37 percent as businesses increased spending on its virtualization software, the company announced Monday. Revenue for the three months to Dec. 31 was $835.6 million, up from $608.2 million in the fourth quarter of 2009 and ahead of analysts' expectations, Thomson Reuters said.

The Motorola Xoom 10.1-inch touchscreen tablet will cost $700 when it first appears on Feb. 17, according to leaked documents and an unnamed Engadget.com source. The Xoom runs Android 3.0, or Honeycomb, which is maximized for tablets.

U.S. broadband speeds lag behind global counterparts
South Korea and Japan collectively boast the top 45 of the 100 cities with fastest average broadband connections worldwide, while the United States has just 13 cities on the list, most in the bottom 20 percent. These are the findings in Akamai's recently released quarterly "The State of the Internet" report [PDF], which provides Internet statistics on areas such as broadband adoption, mobile connectivity, and attack traffic.

Report: Oracle confining Java future to enterprise use
Oracle is limiting the development of Java by focusing the future development of the language on enterprise use, to the detriment of a wider, more diverse Java community, charged a pair of analysts at Forrester Research. "Sun had a very broad focus for Java, including enterprise middleware but also PCs, mobile devices, and embedded systems. Oracle's focus will be on enterprise middleware first and foremost, because that's where the money is," concluded the report, authored by Forrester analysts Jeffrey Hammond and John Rymer.
